Spoiler (highlight to view)
The summary is misleading. I thought it was some kind of romantic comedy with soccer as a background plot. So i didnt read it earlier. I finally broke down and read it after it was recommended to me. Without spoiling too much this is an enamoring manga that follows Kakeru's attempt to get to the international stage in honor of his brother Suguru who dies in a tragic accident.

I dont know that much about soccer, but this is surely one manga ill be following.

Surprisingly Entertaining

Most who know me will recognize quite well that I'm not, shall we say, enamored of the typical shounen fanfare, be it sports, harem, action, or otherwise. However, Area no Kishi is quite good, despite containing many of these traditional elements, so this is just another example of the incorrectness of absolutes.

What makes this manga succeed isn't its exceedingly normal cast, unremarkably average art, or even the character development, which is slightly above average, but the way the story is told. The author may not have a flare for realism, but he certainly has a strong grasp of what it means to lay plans for a story that is quite detailed in its scope. I get the impression that the storyline is actually designed significantly in advance while still leaving the author some wriggle room, which is always a good thing.

This is one I'll keep my eye on, although there's no telling if I'll lose interest in the later volumes.

If you're looking for a shounen sports manga, look no further. This is one you have to read.

Like the similar "underdog" plot in sports manga, you have Kakeru who's not that amazing at soccer. But similarly it's pleasant reading about his accomplishments in those areas.

The supporting characters are also really well thought out and likable. Like someone said before, the main girl character (there's always that one...) is actually really cool. She's not annoying in the least, and can kick butt in soccer too. Really a win-win situation if you ask me.

Oh and one of my all time favorite characters of all is Suguru, Kakeru's older brother. The relationship between the two of them is perhaps one of the darkest things in this series. And one of my favorite things to read about.

I won't say anymore, for risk of spoiling anything.

Just read it! ^^

It draws you in and you can't help but read until you finish all the chapters. I find this manga refreshing and very mature. The characters all stand out in their own way. The main character Kakeru doesn't impress you at first but rather he makes you want to find out more about him and see how he'll improve his skills & way of thinking. Plus, the female character Nana isn't annoying, bratty, whiny, or bitchy at all. She's honest, caring, smart, very talented in soccer, and truly want to see Kakeru to succeed.
I diffinetly will keep my eye out on this one.

This manga is strangely touching and deeply likable due to the excellent presentation of the story and it's characters. Kakuzu makes the manga difficult to put down to his likable personality and my own curiosity about how he will deal and interact with various situations and characters.

In the beginning it was an average sports manga with good art and ok story line. But as character developes the manga just sucks you in. It became the manga i look forward to most every week. Even though the characters are exaggerated and becomes "godly", i don't think it affects the story line much.

Chapters 6 and 7 were ones I didnt see coming at all. Honestly didnt like the direction though it does add alot to the story. Makes it kind of dark though and takes away an element of the story I really liked and replaces with another one Im not to sure about.

Coming from someone who rarely reads sports manga, this one is pretty good. The cast of characters is well-balanced, and the story develops at a good pace.
The art is pretty clean (it's easier to understand than some others I've seen), and there's more to it than I thought there would be.
Anyway, give this a try, even if you wouldn't normally touch this type of manga.
