Mass mayhem and bloody rampage does indeed work in this serie. Funniest thing is that so far there hasnt been a single completely impossible thing what they have done in anime and manga. Unlike most of series which are based on unrealistic stuff, this isnt.

I like to look at Black Lagoon as the summer blockbuster of the manga world. It does exactly what you expect it to- entertain you with nearly mindless violence, completely unrealistic flashy action panels, and some underlying plot and character development that, while nothing incredible, complements the action nicely without detracting at all. This isn't really something you should be thinking much with, and it doesn't try to be all that often, which is probably why I find it to be more successful than others in the same genre. It's just violent mayhem, plain and simple- but it works.

Just have fun with it.

To tell the truth i like the anime more than the manga, it was the anime that introduced me to the manga really, and when it ended i couldn'tt help but search for the manga. It's a pretty awesome series as soon as it starts and the action doesn't let you go for a minute, fast paced, high action, just the way i like it.

A bit harder to follow than the anime, but still a goofy, enjoyable action read. Obviously with this frequent and detailed action scenes, it flows alot better in the anime, as does the snappy dialouge and conversations; but the manga has the same great, quirky characters and charm that is so attractive in the anime. You just need to read it by volume rather than individual chapter by chapter, because you can get into the flow of it.

Some very interesting characters set in a lawless, crime haven in South East Asia makes this an intriguing prospect. Throw in our main character, a stranded japanese salaryman, and we have our story. And a hell of a good one it was. Art is appealing with emphasis on fast paced and fanciful firefights usually led by Revy, the 'anti-heroine' of this story. The plot is top-notch imo with frequent references to Western pop-culture, politics and history. This manga is also quite heavily laced with a sense of irony and gallow's humour. All in all a very good read and certainly very recommendable.

As with many readers, i watched the anime but was left hanging. I picked up the manga to continue on where it left off. One can only hope that Anonymous spore will continue with the scanlation.

I watched the anime first and since then turned to the manga. The anime follows the manga faithfully just with the story arcs from the first 6 volumes shuffled around a bit. What drew me in to this story was the "farcry" feel it had to it, guerilla warfare in a tropical island environment. The action can be a little over the top as people have stated but I like badass bitches, so that's ok with me.

I feel I have to comment.
1. Yes, the anime is better than the manga. (however, scanlations for the manga are extremely slow and have not yet caught up to the subbed anime)
2. The action......frankly I feel that it's just the mangaka's inexperience in laying down character background that really makes the manga seem so "over the top."
To quote another comment "It allows the Reby (or however you spell her name), to do incredibly stupid things, like running into a room full of bad guys, killing them all, while they kinda just stand there, firing their guns at nothing in particular."... in reality, that's completely possible. It all depends on the relative training and pure psychotic tendencies of the individuals in question. Not to mention that drawing/scripting action scenes isn't exactly like sketching a picture book neh?
Either way, it's the lack of depth, not the "over the top" action that kills the manga for me. The anime is just plain better.
But the manga is still worth reading, sucks that no one's scanlating it at a decent pace.

Normally, in most action manga, even if the characters are super-powerful, they get injured and spend some time formulating and learning new strategies.

In this manga, it's a little too insane: Revy(that's her name, right?) manages to bring down an entire platoon of elite fighters without even getting hurt.

Gods, this sounds more like some Hollywood movie: where the bad guys will just misfire so the main characters get to kill them and live for another day. Plus, just by randomly firing a gun around, you can bring down a room of veteran fighters? That's ... just kinda silly.
