This manga is a complete waste of time. The main character is pretty weak. I've read until vol 37 and the main character lost all the tournaments final. Guys don't bother about this one and if you're looking for good martial art manga try: The Breaker, Veritas, Baki, Tough, Holyland, kenichi, Aiki, noritaka.

Realism of this Manga

Hey all

I am new here, i just want to comment on one thing. Most martial arts manga have very little to NO realism to it.

Elementcharm. Which style of Karate are you involved in? The manga's bunkai of Saifa, Seiyunchin and Suparinpei is not perfect, but its not totally out of whack. These are traditional Goju kata (but also practiced by other style). I agree that jump kick is probably not the best technique to use in sparring, it give you very little control, butits not NO control.

Just so you don't question me of my knowledge, I am a black belt in Geishin ryu, only started doing Goju since 3 years ago, and am a 3rd den in ITF Taekwon do, also a brown belt in Judo... Not saying that I am absolutely correct, but just to be fair to the manga, while it did exaggerate on a LOT of things like ALL manga does, the author was not a complete dunce, he did do some research...

Another thing, about the spin kick, again, you can't just judge or make a comment base on what you can do... i myself can't do it as well either, but trust me, i have seen some Taekwon do master that can stop in the midst of a full power round house or hook kick...

Now, i agree totally with you concerning the teaching of any martial art, its not meant to start a fight, its meant to GET OUT of the fight if anything.....

@elementcharm: I don't really get your attitude...although the image of Karate may not be all to great, this Manga promotes Karate. You should be happy that there is actually an other manga promoting karate. Btw... Minoru isnt the kind of guy who learns Karate for the sake of beating up people...it doesn't glorify violence. Keep your distence, knowing that this isn't real Karate, and try to enjoy the manga.
Peace man biggrin

Real nice manga though...expecting much from this one ^^

@elementcharm...wtf are you talking about confused its a manga its a manga..... most of the mangas arent realistic.... and 1 information... he done athletics for many years... so he have the muscle for it.... the only thing he learns in two weeks ... is how to fight.. and the determination to win..... only that matters .... and wtf are you talking about not getting stronger in two weeks confused .. he done the basics trainig long enough..... what he is lacking was the will to fight and the sharpness of his techniques..... so in this two weeks he trains nonstop the sharpness.... and of course he has the will to do it.....because it was for his friend... and you talking about control in the midair... don't you read the first chapters confused ? he did athletic.... so he spin so much with his body in mid-air(everyday)...of course he has the control for it....when you don't like it then don't read it.... and you talking about to be banned .... so what?? why don't you think that the jurys find him interesting and let him passed?? they are interest how much he can grow up.....blablablabla..... its only my opinion.... just want to say it... don't take it too harsh smile

in my opinion..... this manga is really great.... those who like shounen, martial arts, action etc. mangas ... you must read it..... aa i forget to mentioned it.... till chapter 20 or so ... it will be a little boring... but then ... biggrin

Of course it's not Hajime no Ippo. But it is still good. Don't want really fast development - don't read manga)) Like, in HSDK, where your average wimp was turned into awesome fighter in one year. And it still is by far the best martial arts manga ever. So, who cares about realism, if it is awesome? I don't.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
I'm sorry, but setting up the story in a supposedly realistic world where the total beginner martial arts hero has his first match (in school, _to the death_?!?) bare-handed against a sadistic kendo master swordsman? I don't care what kind of training or aptitude you have, you ain't gonna be 10 times better than the swordsman in a matter of a few weeks. Who cares about the result or the choreography of the fight: just the fact that the idiot was able to find someone to train him is silly.

The bad guy for that fight is the same old story of the sibling who somehow got so confused in life that the sadistic bastard should truly be in arkham asylum with the Joker, not in college with a bunch of similarly sadistic hoodlum chums. That's OK 'n all, but don't make him so insanely over the top, yo! In real life, you face consequences when you walk around campus assaulting people with a sword in broad daylight.

Sorry for being so tough on this manga, but I don't see how it can be compared with Hajime no Ippo either - that manga is actually largely believable (so long as you look past some boxers' video arcade-like special moves) - as a boxer/thai boxer I can see it. The martial arts drawings in this manga are very realistic as well (and 'look' better, overall), but the situations just aren't realistic in the slightest and the characters are all 1-dimensional.

P.S.: in case it wasn't clear, the reason I'm being critical about the realism of the manga is because the author chose a realistic setting. DragonBall is in a slightly different 'world' for a reason: that's what explains why the characters are able to do things like they do.

In other words: the hyper-realistic drawings and environment simply don't fit the dragonball-like 'imaginary arts'. The two are so jarringly inappropriate for one another that it's hard to ignore.

The greater criticism that the characters are one dimensional is also significant: an astute reader would notice that the characters in dragonball (for ex.) are not one-dimensional - they're fun and surprising. In this manga, each character simply acts to make the plot progress, not because they are individuals.

2 points given solely for the drawings, 1 point for 'being'...

Good series, be patience.

This is one of the series that the author took some time before he found the right direction. At first he was going for more fan service and school bouts (the 100 martial arts clubs which was introduced at first). Couple of volumes down the road the story got serious about real fighting and it got real interesting and entertaining. I'd say it is as good as Hajime no Ippo (which has run almost 100 volumes by now). The artwork also got better, much much better, and the art in the first few volumes is nothing to look down at, it is much better than other series.

Keep this in mind when trying to get through the first few volumes, that if the series is no good, it won't last 34 volumes (and on going with no end in sight), be patience.

Ok, you see that really cool looking manga cover on the upper right? I looked at that and thought wow, cool art... Alright, I read this. But... the actually art in the manga is not even close. The main character is some blonde hair wimp... not the cool looking dude featured in the cover above. I don't particularly like him because he has a weak, annoying personality.

I dont like it. The initial main guy is like one of those typical blond hair air heads. Yes, there may be something better later on but thus far im just not into it. I MAY get back when more chapters are released...
