Description
Just before entering the university, Yanagiba Masahiko's father died in a car accident. His mother died when he was four, which makes him now really an orphan. But even before the death of his father, he didn't have a family life, as his father was always busy or abroad.

When his mother's younger brother and his wife decide to invite him to live with their family, his life takes a turn. But it is not going to be the normal family life he is imagining for himself. What is the "terrible" secret that led his parents to break the bonds with his aunt and uncle? What could be the true nature of his cousin, Shion? And last but not least, will this "terrible" secret eventually get Yanagiba, too?

This series just adds things on instead of ending it. It feels unnatural, but is a great joy since it continues the characters story.

I dont care so much about the case of his uncle/aunt. it's their prob and nothing to do begin with .i dont really hate something like transgender ( it's their nature ).. But i really hate the fact , the protagonist was sometimes dressed like a girl ( it showed that his will was so weak ) . It's disgusting to me ! i keep reading it because the art is so good and a bit curious about the mysterious girl.

Many months ago, I read this manga, grew disgusted with it and thus, dismissed it as "trash" and gave it a low rating. But I decided to try reading it again with an open mind. It seems there's more depth to this title than it appears. And the protagonist was really childish in the beginning, though he's developed over time.

Despite some of its' misconceptions and stereotypes about gay people and transgenders this story is worth reading. Though, some might point out that those misconceptions were presented from the various characters' perspectives since this story concerns Japanese society in the early 90s and just because, well, one grew up with transvestites, doesn't mean the person isn't free from prejudism against GLBTs or against themselves.

A nice surprise overall. Plenty of comedy with solid dramatic backdrop. Although the theme of this manga is rather... controversial. Expect a love-or-hate relationship with this title.

There aren't enough manga series out there that deal with transgenderism in a way that isn't mocking or isn't just a ploy to help along a standard romantic plot. At first (well, the first few chapters) it looks like this is going to be just another kinky gag-centric story, but as the series progresses, it becomes more complex and thought-provoking. The humor that starts off as apparently crass eventually becomes layered and subtle. It's almost like watching a diamond getting cleaned, and achieving its purity over time. Trust me when I say that the seemingly childish beginning turns out to have hidden depths -- the childishness isn't actually the story's (or the mangaka's), but instead the protagonist's. As the main character of the manga matures, so does the manga's outlook.

Hojo Tsukasa gives real depth to his characters, and he treats them with gentleness and dignity. Everyone from the ambiguously gay mafia don to Masahiko's aunt and uncle, and the uncle's prejudiced father -- everyone is given space to develop and grow in the manga. Masahiko himself matures and becomes one of my favorite characters ever. (Of course, Masahiko's uncle remains my favorite. Guh, SO HAWT! Although the aunt is pretty hot, too. Decisions, decisions...)

I just love this story. Thank you, Nojay, for scanslating this.

When i first started reading it, i was thinking to myself, no way I'm going to like this, but here i am giving it 10 stars and eagerly anticipating the next release, the story is about a guy who has to live with his uncle/aunt (take the slash however you want it) and hilarity ensues, must read if you like gender benders

on a side note my only qualm is the drawing style and in that only the eyes because it always looks like they're cross eyed.

Overall I think its got a solid story, although the emotion can be a bit overdone at times. Read it if you'd like a well-drawn and comedic example of the gender bender genre.

Well, to be pedantic, it's Hōjō (assuming your browser renders the letter ō with its macron properly -- it's Unicode 014D if you need to look it up.) The -ou is a common Romaji fix for non-Unicode text to indicate the lengthened -o vowel sound -- the Tendō family in Ranma 1/2, for example, is usually named Tendou in regular English text.

The scanlation of Family Compo I'm doing is a two-step through the French Tonkam edition, like most people who take on this series. On the cover the author's name is given as "Tsukasa Hojo". I try and stay away from complications like Unicode as it makes my life harder and it looks like the French publishers did so too.
