Description
From Yakuza:

Shinichi Kudo is a high-school student who, by using observation and deduction, is good at solving mysteries. While investigating one, he is caught by the criminals that he was watching and forced to take an experimental drug. Leaving him for dead, the criminals disappear. Instead of killing him, however, the drug turns Shinichi into a little kid.

To preserve the illusion of his 'disappearance,' Shinichi adopts a new name based on his favorite author (Arthur Conan Doyle) and becomes Conan Edogawa. Ran, his (actually Shinichi's) childhood friend takes this little boy under her wing and brings him to her home. Conan now lives at a detective agency run by Ran's father, but his mind is as keen as ever and he continues to solve mysteries... always allowing Ran's father to take all the credit.

As far as everyone's concerned, Conan is just a little kid anyway... even to Ran. This is *extremely* frustrating to Conan since nobody will listen to a 'little boy.' Despite this, Conan has a mission... to find the criminals who did this to him and get the antidote to that drug.

Note: Won the 46th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōnen category in 2001.

One of my favorites!!

This manga is my favorite. Although some would say that the story is pretty slow. Well, this manga is in mystery genre. I mean, these cases actually add spice to this series. I mean, the fact that you would read this means you should expect for cases to be solved. Anyway, this series is one of the best!!

By far, this is the BEST detective series I've read. The cases are all complex and interesting, surely challenges the minds of both the mangaka and the readers (: Even though it was a bit slow around the 40's, the plot has definitely picked up in the recent chapters ^_^ Never the least, I LOVE THIS MANGA! Great work Aoyama Gosho-san! x3

long but still interesting

I'm astonished that a manga could ever be this long and even more when I look at the complete collection of more than 70 volumes in my room. Even if I think it's boring solving murder cases where there are ALWAYS EXACTLY 3 suspects, I keep buying every volume once it's on sale and keep reading it, in hope that there could be some alternation like a Kaitou Kid case or some longer arc that is more than only four chapters. It has the advantage that you can read in the middle of such an arc and still can understand what's going on.

Despite this manga being repetitive, Aoyama brings always some romance, humour and action in his work. My wish is for him to finally draw the ending (since he knows how to end it) and to continue drawing Magic Kaitou, which isn't complete and only has four volumes. My advise for beginners is not to read each volume one after another, but to go mishmash (naturally beginning with the first volume).

I've read it since I was young, it was one of my most favourite manga at that time and that's the reason why I generously gave it 9 points although the manga has lost its shiny. The murderers killed for some silly/absurd reasons (sometimes by some insane/unthinkable methods) and the repetitiveness never fail getting me bored lately, except for the mafia part.

dragged out for too long

it starts real well

the cases are challenging and the art is good
however, too bad this is shounen manga - too few tragic moment, too much fillers and too many repetitive cases.

it's still a good read when you're bored though.

if it was a seinen manga with more tragic love drama and less kiddie stuff it'd be perfect.

its movies are good though smile I especially love the one with all the cards - shooting your lover to save her.

the one took place on the aphrodite ship wasn't too bad either - it was really touching in the later half.

but the author really should have made shinichi being a little kid an arc instead of dragging out this long.

now here's a manga that challenges the intellect. A modern Sherlock Holmes. Don't underestimate the complexity of the plot, the case can be very difficult to solve, even for detective fans.

I've read all fifty volumes and I must say that I'm REALLY impressed with the series, although I was less than thrilled with the drawing style at first (as I'm more into really realistic drawings), then I really got into it - especially the enigmas at hand. The first volumes often cover closed room mysteries or impossible cases but they soon evolve into cases where you have to discover who's the culprit by dismantling the alibis and whatnot - but in the meantime, you will be sure to be EXTREMELY surprised, especially with the way crimes were committed and the way the crime scene were tampered with to make them appear unsolvable.

Character design is very good and provide excellent settings for drama, slight romance and most of all, comedy. We follow the series through different circumstances - according to who is accompanying Conan, be it Kogoro Mouri, the Detective Kids, Heiji Hattori or with the "anti-Black Organization squad". It is not a series that will stretch eternally. There is a path but the development is quite slow.

But in the meantime, the plot turns will be most likely, if not surely, to REALLY surprise you, as the setting for a hypothetical final confrontation and the solution to Shinichi/Conan's plight draws near.

By then, you'll have learnt a truckload of miscellaneous facts about science, biology, history nature, logic and other fields, some of which give a good insight to our world's secrets and Japan's way of life.

It is a must-read, especially if you're fond of mystery cases and seemingly impossible crimes. God knows I'm going to read it to the end.
