Meet Pamela, a tarot card reader who helps supernatural beings living in the human world. She'll help anyone, whether they're a love-stricken cat, a vampire spending eternal life running from his one true love, an unattractive waitress looking for the man of her dreams, or even a magician who creates a humanoid doll to serve the woman he loves. Although Pamela is good-natured, there is a deep dark secret that she must deal with before she can move on to the next life.

Wasted potential

This is a manhwa where the individual "stories" easily overshadow the main story. The author was able to deftly weave engaging stand-alone stories through the main story through Volumes 1 to 4. The art was great and the revelation of Pamela's background was cleverly laid out piece by piece. The groundwork was there for a great conclusion. Or so I thought. Volumes 5 and 6 started the downward spiral in terms of the main story's plot and pace. It may very well have been due to the hiatus of the series but the main story was so heavily rushed that nothing ended up making sense. It felt as if the author was compelled to make everything connect for the sake of ending the story. Which is a shame because the first half held so much potential. But this takes nothing away from the interesting, albeit mostly bittersweet, short stories that are peppered throughout the series, which alone elevate this series to a 6 for me.

Beautiful and Disturbing

I really love this manga, it is a real piece of art in my opinion. Some may not like its almost gaudy and gothic realism but others will. First of the story starts out rather simple yet gets more and more complicated so those who want a light read this will not be it. Secondly all the small stories are lovely to read some are light others again are heavy and some are rather shounen-ai so be aware those who are not fans. The last volume became very complicated and a bit gruesome. Yet I enjoyed all these elements, I liked the formulaic plot, with the dark undertones, I also liked the messyness of the story, you were given the chance to interpret whatever you wanted. However some may feel the ending to be a bit too open and bordering on naive. I do believe if the manga-ka had more time alot more could have been made from it.

Fantasy - stereotype

...When they say fantasy here, it is a fantasy in every sense...beautiful boys and men graduating to each other or being aggressively drawing...child faced girls were mostly beguiling and sometimes intensively cruel inside, heaven forbid a beautiful boy had ever had the slightest of malice in him...they are the target of intense attraction of both sides...one woman has some righteousness- and no other women do- I really wonder if such mangakas ever feel proud for being a woman..

...But looking away from these, this manga has a story, albeit the intense goth fashion and art and presentation to 'enhance' the experience...worth a read, and will be enjoyed...could have been worse..I find this better art than petshop of horrors but the latter is more exploratory...

The art is gorgeous - maybe the best I've ever seen in a manga. The story is also interesting, all of the characters are intriguing and worth following. The twists and turns of the plot were perfectly done - kept me guessing without seeming forced. The ending is perfect. This manga left me wanting more, more, more - not because it was left unresolved, but because I loved it that much! I'd give this an 11 if I could.

I really am enjoying this story so far. Pamela, the main protagonist, is a tarot reader who tells her customers their past and future. She's good hearted without being annoying or stupid. One of them more "cool" female leads in shoujo manga/manwha. Kind of reminds me of Yuko from xxxHolic (although both are ENTIRELY different characters, there's something that's similiar about them. Plus, they are awesome female characters).

TTC has some really lovely artwork and interesting plots (currently on the 2nd volume). Their side stories seem can be a bit emotional. Not exactly tear jerker for me, but I'm actually finding myself rooting for characters, and sympathyzing for them. The shonen ai elements of the story are awesome as well (but if you're not into it, don't let it stop yourself from reading this!)

That all said, I'm really looking forward to reading more.

The art is really good and the stories are quite interesting. However, the plot falters a little 'cos of the temporary hiatus of the series, so the later volumes: 5 and 6 seem a tad rushed. And it seems as if there'd been greater roles planned for certain characters but were compacted for various reasons. Btw, the Korean magazine that serialised Tarot Cafe went out of business, so Tokyopop sealed a deal to resume and complete the series: that's where you've got vols 5 and 6.

This is forever one of my favorite manhwa. It reminds me somewhat of Petshop of Horrors, but I think TOC is brighter. I wish it could be longer, but it seems that the manhwaga wants to finish soon, judging from the plot.

Immensely enjoyable

This is one of the most breathtaking, stunning, surprisingly detailed artworks I ever happened to come across. As other reviewers already pointed out, some scenes are real tear jerkers and the storyline gets confusing and gory at times, then again, it only spices up the series IMO.

What I like the best is that this manhwa is a delightful mix of the short (sometimes even too short!) episodes about Pamela's customers and the longer insights into the main characters' background. Some beautifully drawn stories are downright boring for they suggest nothing but characters running around in circles and solving the same problem over and over again - and the Tarot Cafe story is pleasantly refreshing in this regard, like an ice cream on a hot summer day. smile

My only complaint is that it's next to impossible to tell the male characters from the female ones...

Simply put, this not the run-of-the-mill manga/manhwa one would throw away right after reading. Highly recommended!
