The story takes place in an era similar to that of ancient Rome in a country called Chronos. It follows a group known as the Temple Mercenaries. In particular, the manhwa is about Ares, Michael and Baroona, three young warriors with mysterious pasts and surpassing skills...

The manhwa is notable for its subtle use of anachronistic elements (Ares' shoes are similar to that of classic Adidas), as well as very dynamic and fluid action sequences.

Surprising depth and realism in a shounen adventure story
Rating: 10.0 / 10.0

A typical shounen adventure manga, right? That's what it is for most readers, I'm sure. But Ares has surprising depth. It doesn't go into detail in any of the serious parts which is what I like about it.

The over-the-top fights, fantasy weapons, superhuman-like strength. They are all plot devices. What's the point of them being realistic? This is, after all, a shounen adventure. The only criticism I've read here seems to be on very shallow things like these. It's natural that the story seems immature for someone who is immature themselves.

The character relations, motives, personalities, warfare, the psychological and social effects of war, politics. All of them are more realist and complicated than most anything you'll find it modern popular fiction. Most of it is on the background and it just follows Ares and his friends on their cliché-ish quest. But this is a good thing. It's kind of a light hearted story and with all the drama and tragedy it doesn't lose that light heartedness. The ending does have melancholy but it is also a happy ending. A deep story doesn't need to be a dark tragedy. Ares doesn't gloat on it's depth but focuses on the simple drama and slice-of-life.

You don't need to over-think itit is simply an adventure story after all. But it's the detail what makes that simple adventure story a small masterpiece.

Anybody giving this manhwa less then a 5 is retard and can't grasp a great storyline. The art may not be pleasing but it doesn't give you fairy tale bull. The manhwa is not confusing if you actually READ, and not just look at the artwork

Now THIS is a perfect manga. I love the plot, the characters, and the art. I admire how the manhwaga doesn't forget about any of the characters, giving each of them a definite ending. The manhwaga has an eye for detail so all the questions I ask about are answered by the end of the manhwa. I adore the characters and their growth. The manhwaga skillfully portrays emotion and focuses enough on how events affect the characters. I thought each character was fully developed and I liked seeing how each on matured. The story was fun and always interesting. I never got bored reading it. There's enough of everything smile And I actually like this type of artwork. I couldn't ask for more. All my expectations were met by Ares. Although it's not a classic like Rurouni Kenshin, I will dare to say that Ares is on the same level.

Don't be put off by the art! Sure it's not amazing but the story makes up for it 10x over. It's got a great plot,

even after Michael dies it still manages to hold itself together.
Although it does become a wee bit rushed. But it's a really gripping read, I get abit annoyed with his girlfriend but it only really comes into the main story a couple of times. But the relationship between the three of them is great. Definitely read it!

I have a very hard time sticking to mangas. I find myself bored easily. I read Ares all the way through with very little breaks. It is definitely one of the best I've read. This manga spares no one's feelings. It has the feeling of doing what it wants, and the best part about it, is it doesn't waste time! There are no drawn out fights or anything. Read it while you can smile

The art....

The art is probably the biggest hurdle in this manga. If you can get past that, it's fine (when I first looked at the cover, I thought that it'd be shojo-like.... Was I any more wrong. I'm okay with the art, I think it adds an interesting feel to the manga.)
The first 100 or so chapters of this manga were decent, enough to keep me hooked. But past that... Ares becomes addicting and amazing. (if you can get that far) This manga probably brought out the strongest emotional response I've had to any manga, ever.
Overall, I think it's worth checking out.

i love this manhwa. i love this manhwa more than life itself. (if i'm a nihilist, that means less than it might.) if i catapulted to the moon with but one story, it would be this one. i will learn my mother tongue just to read this in its original form. i will most certainly do that before i learn greek to likewise give due to "the odyssey".

the art of "ares" is loose and rangy and full of motion, as if the artist snapped out his wrist before drawing an entire volume in one go. the story is spare and well-paced and capable of pathos. each character sparks. every frame speaks - even those without word or action. that is, ryu geum chel is a great storyteller who also happens to draw stylishly well.

lucas and tolkein annoy me with their cultural rewrites, whereas ryu's modern and roman munge adds color because the story is his own.

i love "the breaker", and "ares" reminds me that i only _like_ "the breaker".

that blur between shounen and seinen, it is the best. if you have a grown-up attention span, read "ares". the god of stories will never forgive you if you don't.

Ok, i can't express how much i ADORE this manhwa. But, i have to say this: if you are looking for a manhwa with the most realistic art or the kind of drawings what you normally see in others mangas, well, maybe that will pull you back for reading this serie. I personally loved the drawing, it was wierd, but perfect fot this story.
Even so, that apart, i really think it's worth give it a try, because every character do his part in the story, the funny, and the dark ones. If you read it 'till the end, you'll probably won't regret it.
While reading, try seeing the whole thing, not only the drawing or the characters; it's about their lives, the way they lived and the reason they do what they do(and of course, the actions parts), but you won't appreciate it if you think that some part is bad because it has nothing to do or is out of place with what was happening.

Ok, if you didn't read all the thing above, is fine. Just try it, i loved it, as every work this artist did. Enjoy it!! (and sorry if i wrote something wrong)

The art is very unique, and might take some getting used to. The story is also told in a way that most manga/manhwa aren'tit's more serious and dark than any shounen manga I've read. The characters are really this storie's selling point. Each one is unique and relatable. The author captures human behavior brilliantly.
