Its in my top 10 (cant tell you the exact ranking because my top ten has like ...20 different mangas lol..its hard to choose ;~;..)

Very VERY good fighting scenes in my opinion, they don't drag on for more than like...3-4 chapters? unlike other mangas where its 20 frickin chapters just to kill one annoying ass idiot GAH!

anyways, the drawings are wonderful from the start and get even better in the recent chapter (allens so sexy~)

The plot IS a little scattered, but ya know that's to be expected, you've got like, 20 different characters and even MORE gets added as the story goes on, if i was her I would get very lost haha XD
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
and she kinda sprung that whole thing about Allen being evil on us. I wasn't expecting that, I was expecting more like..."The person who took care of me after being abandoned gave me his awesome 'save the world' powers " lol but i like this better

So...I would give it a ...9/10

READ the Context!

Well, I'm sure I'm not the only one who thought that my previous review is too long to be called one, hm? So, let's change it, shall we?

First, read the spoiler below if you think that this a stupid manga because God just created a self-destruct button called the "Heart"...

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The Heart is the key to the war? *snort* With the recent development in the latest volumes, I think the so-called Heart is the evil one in this war rather than the Earl...

Ha, great going. If your brain didn't explode from ch. 202 - 213 I congratulated you, literally

Okay, first off: this is one of a heck complicated manga. You really, really need to actually READ the context of the speeches and thoughts in the manga CAREFULLY. Don't just skip from panels to panels like a mad rabbit.

Also, if you're NOT a fan of plot-twists and just love to be right, this awesome manga isn't for you. Why? Well, this manga has a LOT of plot-twists that almost no one can predict... Basically, everything after the first 15 volumes is a twisted wonderland of cliffhangers and plot-twists. I've read a lot of mysteries, and this manga definitely will make anyone think harder than Death Note, Sherlock Homes, and whatever out there. I mean, who had guessed about C.M.'s "death" in that way?! It's the best WTF moment, and ch. 212... and ch. 213... and vl. 17... All chapters ended with cliffhangers and suspense.

Second; don't babble out 'oh, the author is freaking slow and lazy...' As I said, this is a manga with many twists. Honestly, I've been a theorist for a long time and I couldn't imagine how hard Hoshino is doing to research for information. And her illness is taking a toll on her. It's the back bone, people; the most risky and painful to take care of after the brain and liver cancer. Impatient reader, just shut up and go somewhere else.

It's simple, really. If you're confuse, then you're NOT smart enough to understand anything as complicated as D.Gray-man. There are more than one reason this manga is rated for OLDER TEEN, you know.

And what is so much more unique other than the plot-twists in in D.Gray-man? It's the characterization. It's. Just. Perfect. Unlike most shounen manga, they don't just yell "I'll protect my nakama!" and fight then win. You can really SEE the bond that they make and share. With their friends as well as their enemies.

This manga is getting more and more realistic: no one is black, no one is white why some humans are capable of doing inhuman things? Why some of us have no sympathy and just kill? In D.Gray-man, eveyone that are evil truly have their reasons for doing what they're doing. The church isn't the nice one, yet the Noah Clan isn't the bad one... So, which one is the other?

Really, you can't hate anyone in D.Gray-man. They always, always have a reason or two for every of their decision. The bad guys are NOT just any other antagonists where they are hungry for power, money, and other cliché things. Their actions are deeper than we all guessed on the first few volumes.

Complaining about the art? Well, I highly recommend you to buy the one released by Viz. They are FIXED by Hoshino and are much more comfortable to look at. The lines are thinned, the color are repaired... once you buy the volume, the word gorgeous just cross your mind. And remember, Hoshino loves to hide things and add a lot of details and symbolism. The art isn't too 'packet' or 'messy', it just has a lot of details that your brain backfired.

And my warning for any younger teens that are planning to read D.Gray-man: this manga is dark. Very, very dark and horror-ish. Though I won't call this gore. Yet... Anyway, this manga contains religious theme, explicit child abuse, few sexual hints, violence, a lot of blood, mechanical skeletons shoving themselve down people's throat, childern mutilating another child up... (I do regret buying volume 20 for that reason...) Since its move to SQ Jump, there's a high chance of D.Gray-man changing to seinen...

In short, this manga isn't for everyone. If you're impatient; love to be right; hate plot-twists; love cliché things, this manga IS NOT for you.

Fast-Paced Title

I heard about DGM awhile ago, but I never managed to start the series until recently. I read the first vol to the latest chapters within a few days, and I have to admit there is potential.

Plot: Young orphan joins secret organization to defeat "akuma" and he meets a variety of different characters and learns about his past.

Starting out it feels episodic, with Allen going out for each mission and for many of the action fights it's confusing with the sudden changes in POV or when he "levels up". Halfway from into the series, we finally get to the main idea about antagonists and some background history about the Black Order. There are short chapters devoted to some of the supporting characters and their individual histories.

Characters: Large cast of main and supporting characters. I admit I started to become slightly confused since people appear and disappear from parts of the chapters frequently. I feel that it's somewhat too busy, and some of the characters don't really have much time devoted to their individual stories. Still I find Allen relatively likable as a MC and no one was extremely annoying in any of chapters.

Art: Yes, I did notice a big change from the beginning chapters to the latest chapter released. I'm in favor of the new art changes, the line work is cleaner and I find it easier to follow the panels. There is a strong "gothic" look to DGM with strong use of contrasting colors. Unfortunately, some of the fight scenes are confusing and tend to take over multiple chapters.

Recommended: Yes. It starts out kind of loosely plotted, but later on it shows potential for a interesting story.

It's...a pretty average shonen IMO...extremely long fight scenes, comedic characters, save-the-world arc-oriented plot. I've read to volume 11 before I dropped it. It's not bad, but there's not much to hook me to the plot or the characters and I'm not a devoted enough shonen fan to like stories without a likeable plot or characters. Read it if you're bored and want to see some fight scenes.

I would agree with the previous review and add that at some point the art style changes so much that it's hard to recognise people. It seems more like a different person writing it than just the mangaka being ill, but I guess people can change that much.

But still, the first 3/4 or so is awesome, a but derivative but so's everything.. and some really memorable fcked-up moments. and the anime is even better. Just read it until it starts really annoying you, then make up your own ending. Or wait for the Anime to re-start and hope for some serious editing (because there's still a story in there somewhere, and it is starting to get better again), but that will probably never happen.

This manga is now just a shell of its former self.

- plot goes nowhere
- random nonsensical arc
- character went out of their established characters
- deus ex machina everywhere
- everyone loves being emo, even non-important characters (and we get to see them wasting pages, hurray)

In addition to that, the irregular release (can't blame the author but still...) just like rubbing salt to the wound. There really is nothing in this manga that I'm looking forward anymore.

Earlier on in the series, I probably would of gave it a 9.5, but it went downhill. There were times that I would of given it a 6-7 rating. Whether that's because the story was bad or I just didn't find it interesting, I can't answer. However, with the few recent chapters, I'm starting to find it much more interesting. Will it rise back to it's former glory, I don't know. Despite all this, it's definitely worth a read.

In my opinion, D. Grey Man is my favorite series. The anime was breath taking and each episode made me so excited to watch. I was disappointed when the anime ended as it left many questions un-answered. And so, I decided to start reading the manga and actually, it was the first manga I have ever read. My heart would throb when I saw that a new chapter was released but now, I've lost it. From EXACTLY chapter 194, the manga started going down hill for me. It was getting sketchy and I had no idea what was going on. I STILL don't know whats going on. Personally, I believe they have made Allen look like a girl and he was all I looked forward to. I continue reading this manga because of Allen Walker <3 but still, I can easily say now that I do not like it as much as I used to. Some of you may like it but, it's no longer what it used to be. I miss the old Allen. T-T

I love D.Gray-Man it's one of my favorites, but if you are gonna read it (and it's worth reading it) it's worth sticking through the bad patches in the middle, the new arc is really good but the couple of arc before that kinda sucked. I don't know why people are complaining about the art, it's nothing special but still good. I do like the characters especially Bak and Allen. Lenalee gets really annoying but it can't be perfect.
