I've watched the anime a lot back then when I was in grade school, it was so funny and cute so I decided to read the manga. I didn't like it at first since the anime one was lighter than the manga. Then rereading it again was a fulfillment.
Like now I've read it again and I still love it!
All the drama, all the characters! It's like Fruits Basket in a way how the ending had the best closure. It was solid.

The absolute best romance manga over 10 volumes

Most romance manga that last more than a few volumes are filled with pointless over the top drama, and misunderstanding after misunderstanding. They also become very repetitious and frustrating after a while. Kare Kano is different on so many levels. Neither of the main protagonist are your typical cookie cutter characters. They actually say whats on their minds for the most part and they just don't assume what the other is thinking. It reads quickly and doesn't at all feel like 21 volumes at all. This is one of my absolute favorite romance manga of all time. The ending is not rushed and leave you with plenty of closure unlike so many others. If you decide to give this a try, read at least 3 volumes before forming any opinions.
read up to ch 42

i really wanted to like this manga, but after a while i just grew tired of it. it's slow, meandering, and heavy-handed. i don't really know how this manga got the praise it garnered.
I tell you, that was GREAT

It was emotional, it was cute, and (maybe it was just for me but) sometimes scary..
Guys thats my first time commenting but I've read way too much shoujo mangas so I can recommend it at ease just dont think even for a sec. The author took a very different subject to start so I gurantee you that you will like it immediately
It does teach you lessons without making you bleak. But I guess I have to admit that it doesnt make you be like "wow" etc. well just read and see for yourselves. Also you will see interesting characters into friendships and lotsa cute couples

i loved loved loved the fact that unlike typical shojo where the bulk of the manga focuses on the characters intimacy, it takes care of that pretty easily and early on and focuses on the much meatier emotional issues. second to none in this respect. purely epic.
there is the fantasy element to it that so much that a person has gone through can be saved by that one person. never been interested in girls and then you see her and it's love at first sight? well arima did have asaba but miyazawa essentially saved him...similar to their kid loving asaba before "she was even born" and him knowing that they were going to have a daughter
it's dark and surprising. and it ties itself up with a little bow all perfect in the end, which i generally love i.e. supremely happy ending because of & after much hardship...a little too perfect maybe? i mean if you're LOOKING for a flaw that would be it...that and the length.

Bests shoujo/psychological manga for me

The premise of two-faced characters has always fascinated me. When I started following through the lives of Yukino and Arima, I was amazed at how naturally the author revealed the personal flaws which they try to conceal. I'm glad that the author explored the psychological side to them being two-faced instead. It made this manga have an insightful twist that very few shoujo mangas possess. The supporting characters were all relatable too; I rooted for all of them throughout the series.
For those who are looking for romance stories in a slice of life backdrop but with enough dramatic elements, Kare Kano is for you. Love stories and friendships here are presented in a realistic way. As the manga lets you explore what is going through the characters' minds, you begin to feel like they are also your friends.

Antithesis to what I hate in manga. Romance manga in particular.

The more I read and find faults in other manga, the more I LOVE Karekano. It doesn't have the tropes I dislike in manga. There are none here.
Usually a manga has some sort of a balance between having great characters, character development, chemistry between characters, plot or atmosphere. KareKano delivers almost everything.
The narrative is somewhat in the middle between manga and heavily pictured novel. Doesn't maintain that great of a balance in the beginning, but when it finally finds that balance it becomes more than amazing.
The main characters are strong enough to carry the manga and they do, but they also get an amazing support cast. So much space to play with character chemistry and development and the manga does just this.
It plays around with lighter and darker themes, silly and serious tone very well. Not without some problems with keeping the balance, but this is were the other aspects come to save it.
It sets up the proper plot part in the first half and delivers in the second.
With novel-like qualities in the manga form, it some times packs in too much of the text and the text itself can become a bit cheesy, some of it because of translation.
The interlude/sidestory in the middle lacks a bit of push to be as great as the rest of KareKano.
With the amount of information packed, it's very good pick for reading multiple times. I would say that, to see all of what it has, it has to be read multiple times.
And more that anything, IT IS SATISFYING! It's a bit rare. Manga usually fail at endings or wrapping thing up or drag out things too much, but this ends with a great feeling of "YES! This is how it should be!"
Even with some faults, I can't give it any other rating besides 10, because this is not objective. Besides being great, it hits me hard enough to disregard its fault and confidently give it the highest score and a "MUSTREAD".

It's a solid story from start to finish. The characters are not the same in the end as they were in the beginning. They change, progress, and learn. That's not seen often in shoujo.
There's comedy, but it does have really dark moments, especially in the second half of the story. It loses some of its initial childish charm, but that makes the ending much more enjoyable to read.
The only beef I have for this story is one particularly long arc that had to do with side characters. But I believe that's more personal than anything; many readers like to know about secondary characters. Well there was also that Twilight-esque vibe there at the very end haha... but it's not all that bad, just a warning.
The art isn't a problem for me; I rarely read a manga for its art.
The story is good, and if that's what you are looking for, then give this a go. You won't regret it.
