It started off well

The premise of the manga is really original and an interesting take on the traditional story of heros and villains. Ignoring the random sex scenes, the first chapters up until

were great and engaging to read. After the hiatus, the quality of the story and characters plummeted. Before, a certain point, the motivations of the protagonist and antagonists were relatable and almost justified, but as the manga dragged on, the depth of the characters were replaced with shallow shounen stereotypes. The characters are now a shadow of their former selves. As the series progresses, the moral ambiguity at the beginning is forgotten, and a slew of shallow villains that are evil for the sake of being evil appear. This wipes yet another layer of depth the story once had. It's still a story about corruption, but as it is now, the story is only a husk of what it once was. The drawing is also not a strong point and often times, characters can be foreshortened awkwardly when drawn in different angles. The style takes some getting used to and is not for everyone. While not considered aesthetically pleasing in the conventional sense, the drawing is able to convey a good range of emotions which is better than the average shounen manga style, therefore it actually adds to the story at times. Also, the quality of the drawings has stayed pretty consistent, if not improving a bit from the beginning to its current chapters. Before I would give it an 8. At the current chapters, it is no more than a 5. Therefore, I would give it an in-between score of 6.

As a series that has gone through countless ups and downs, Ubel Blatt's current direction is plummeting. The characters have gone haywire, the world they inhabit makes less sense with each passing chapter, and the plot itself has become awful. It's sad to see a series come back from hiatus only to get worse.

In regards to the comparison between Berserk and Ubel Blatt...

There is NO comparison. They are two different series with two different flavors.

Great idea but...

The whole idea behind the whole "4 lances of betrayal" and the "7 heroes" is very cool. The art is fun and pretty good. However, the story keeps tripping over itself by throwing in typical anime fetishes like all the lolis and shotas running all around the place. Plus it tries too hard to be "dark" and mature with the random raping or the random sex scenes. I have no problem with nudity or sex or a story that contains rape as long as it serves a purpose beyond just throwing it in there or acting as fan-service for readers. Plus, some of the characters become so ridiculously evil that its a caricature. The author needed an excuse for the main character besides revenge, so all the bad guys end up going crazy with scenes where their raping women or just being abusive just in case the reader wasn't aware that they have it coming. This is just...clumsy. Someone said this was better than Berserk? No its not. Berserk is not perfect mind you, but its story of betrayal is better and harsher than Ubel Blatt. It all comes down to, as another reviewer pointed out, how the story is told. In Ubel Blatt sometimes the story flows, sometimes it glosses over things, more often its choppy with things lacking explanation or weak transitions. Its not awful, but I expected better from all the praise it gets. To me its just average at about a 5.

Strong start, losing it on the long stretch

The series started out great, but as others have mentioned it quickly abandoned its implied moral ambiguity and anti-hero protagonist for a tediously black and white world where the bad guys are almost comically so and the protagonist's minor sins are washed away in the sea of innocent blood the aforementioned bad guys spill. It's sort of amusing seeing the chapter blurbs billing it as dark fantasy when really the only thing that would categorise it as such is the gore and the (thankfully less frequent shotacon looking) nudity and sex.

Everyone's free to like or dislike what they want and I dont want to cheerlead any particular series but it is funny seeing some of the comments decrying Berserk for crimes that Ubel Blatt is much more guilty off e.g. "More believable villains (with purpose/logic/justification vs. "they went crazy, teh end")." Amusing as it applies to at least half of the major villains we've seen in Ubel Blatt so far and basically none of the major villains in Berserk. "Soooo much better art. Especially physiology/proportion/perspective/movement " Come on, just look at Koinzell or any of his harem (lolis or super top heavy combat strippers). Berserk's artwork has considerably more verisimilitude.

Anyhow to drag this back on track, its not terrible, actually its fairly above average. Its just unfortunate that it squandered (and continues to squander) its potential.

The antihero concept was truly interesting at first. Unfortunately, the opponents all turn out to be so evil and shallow that the series loses all moral ambiguity. It ends up as nothing more than justice porn (and the occasional outright porn).

More addictive. Better atmosphere & conveyed better. More believable feelings. More believable villains (with purpose/logic/justification vs. "they went crazy, teh end").

Soooo much better art. Especially physiology/proportion/perspective/movement - kinda important in an action.

Faaaaar better cast. You sympathize with them. You understand them. They're alive here, and not just sword targets.

Better world design: it HAS one. None of that fast-travel in unstated random direction & arrive in new generic evil town/enemy castle crap. Location DOES have consequence, places are visited and revisited, topography matters, political geography changes.

And, heck, it's even grittier.

...all the while also having better swordplay. Technical finesse fighters over big dumb brutes, any day.

obviously without the action i would say this is one of the most cliche hentai with harem.
it's just sad with the good idea of heroes gone bad and revenge.
still read it though when i remember.

This manga start out great and a page turner. Such a shame really that there was several element that take me away from this manga.

random sex scene (very annoying) would be better without this and the volume 0 works reverse to put people off than make people read it due to that.

it was good at first after the sex scene decrease and it became more serious, but more problem. It's too fast paced, like how it just time skip the whole war not telling us how it progressed slowly. I often have problem digesting what's going on and was disappointed

I couldn't believe I loved this manga before despite the sex scene, but now..i just pick this up when I am out of manga to read.

A Berserker´s pale reflection

Übel Trite started of ok-ish despite stunts as indefensible rape-service early on and a barely connected volume 0. The series bothered to improve after a few volumes and then got weirdly boring/tame around volume 8 or so. It went on a hiatus soon thereafter, came back and now it is just grinding it´s gears... The art is pretty good but the world building is sub par and i finally had enough after 12 volumes. How many series is he writing at once btw? Does he want to one up LIM Dall-Young? I suggest to go for similar genre entries as Berserk (10/10), Vinland Saga(10/10) or Wolfsmund (9/10) instead which actually feel seinen and not like a shounen power trip.
Update: I opened up the most recent volume in early 2015 to be greeted with a straight out pornographic gang-bang that didn´t even try to be justified by context so the series even returned to the failings of the early volumes and may be a "remake" of Bastard!! in disguise instead of Miura´s timeless masterpiece. I ain't touching that!

The plan is pretty cool; personal revenge turn out to be a group quest, which along the way take up valuable lessons and friends. However, its execution is nothing to speak of. I trace some intention of putting main characters in cool position in the middle of urgent situation. For example, giving command calmly from a bathub while intercepting an attacking army. Or walking slowly with contentment of own accomplishment while riot is still underway. I have to go here to check up if this manga intended for teenage reader or this is author first piece because, well, they're ridiculous. Add non-protective armour, skimpy clothing, useless knights, irrelevant sex scene; if this piece were to made a movie, it wouldn't even made a decent B-rate.

Turns out, this manga is for mature audience. I don't know which mature audience, but I refuse to be entertained by piece that are put together haphazardly. I guess that's okay if we read it when we're in 'the hell of it, I just want to read some story' mood, because indeed this is a page turner. But believe me, after all pages are turned, you won't say 'what an inspiring story,' but closer to 'son, I'm disappointed.'

Good art, interesting character design, but crowded with useless character and lame placement.
