Nice ending

I'm not into that kind of cliche shoujo, and if fact, i'm glad this wan.t one of those. Although there are 10 vol, it didn't feel like it was too much to dense, and stuff. It's a very nice, and pretty story, with some parts that maybe would've been better if they were explained a little bit more.
But aside of that, in was finally refreshing and it didn't dissapointed me at all. Even in the extras are things that complete some missing thoughts and feelings. Loved everything, Miyake looks like Roxas though (pretend you didn't read that).
A shoujo like it's supposed to be, more or less. More realistic.

A must read. X3

Nice time killer

This was an above-average read. I liked the art, although the side profiles of the bodies seemed super..um flat? The story was slow, and very slice-of-lifey. The protagonist was a cry-baby, but honestly it didn't bug me, because her personality was still strong and she wasn't like those irritating whiny protagonists.

The cons..
-I found the story to be a bit too slow.. by the time I finished, I was surprised that i had read ten volumes.. in those ten volumes it felt like not very much happened..I guess because there wasn't any of those cliche shoujo plot schemes (which is a plus), but yea.. kinda feel like it could have been condensed.
-The ending was good, but felt sort of unfulfilling.. like I said it was ten volumes but I felt like not much had happened.. I guess its because the ending-couple finally gets together in the LAST chapter, and I ended up wanting to see a bit more. Sort of like Strobe Edge except Strobe Edge was more eventful.
-I liked Kyou. I did hate him during some parts, but I switched between rooting for both him and Miyake. That said, his character felt very 2D.Therefore it was a bit difficult to understand him/feel for him. Miyake was better, although I wish the author would have added some more background to him too.. Character development is especially important for these slice-of-life mangas.. This was the biggest fault of the manga in my opinion, other than the painfully slow pace.

Every characters got what they deserve

this is one of a few refreshing manga available out there.
the storyline is somewhat cliche, but my perfect rating goes for the ending.
so I will review about the characters more than the storyline.

Nina - she is not that much of a crybaby to me. She is just a fourteen year old girl and compare to other 'real' crybaby heroines, I think Nina only cries at the right time and I don't find her annoying. when she was broken heart, she didn't spend her time crying or stalking or chasing. instead she keeps standing on her feet and tries to deal with it.

Kyou - he is somewhat... confusing. he is not really a bad boy in my opinion, but his act is totally random. I don't know what kind of reasoning he uses to make a decision. I keep going 'why this, not that?' or 'why now, not then?' every time he decides on something. and Kyou, do tell me, if that what you think about your relationship with Nina, what not try to change it in a way that wouldn't make it worse?

Miyake - now this boy is totally sweet and cute. he is nice, but not a flawless angel. in fact, he does have a lot of flaw. he is typical shoujo character that I always root for, but usualy ended up broken heart. I don't get why he is so genuinely in love with Nina, but in the end his attitude towards her is the one that matters. and I like seeing him together with Nina.

Asou - she's not that hateful for me, though I'd like to know why she has that acute of inferiority complex over relationship.

what I like the most about this manga is everyone makes a mistake, realizes it, and tries to fix it. and in the end, they really got what they deserve.

I'm gonna start off by saying ITS ABOUT TIME. what do i mean by this? Well... it's about damn time someone makes a manga like this, I am so happy about the outcome and I'm so glad It didn't turn out the way I thought it would. It was definitely an interesting and refreshing read.
The art is amazing of course but what I really really really loved is this [WARNING: don't read this comment if you're even 10% sure you might read it]

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I LOVE. AND I MEAN LOVE that she ends up with Miyake. It's just so much more realistic and refreshing! They go out and start to really love each other and she grows with him and they grow up together. I was so afraid that she would go back to Kyousuke once she realizes how he feels--like a typical shoujo manga would-- but she doesn't! She realizes that she's moved on, she loved Kyousuke and he's important to her but she's fallen in love with someone else and she makes the right choice of getting back together with Miyake.

I loved it I cannot begin to express how great it wrapped up in the end. It definitely destroyed the typical shoujo ending that I'm sure everyone who read this THOUGHT they saw coming and blew people's minds by the twist/shift in the end. LOVED it.
****I seriously recommend this to anyone who wants a taste of something new.

Not in the mood for an in depth thingy but there's two things that still bug me:
1. Keisuke, Kyou's younger brother, started off as a precocious, savvy and pretty cool kid. He kinda understood what was going on with his brother and Nina, just wasn't that interested. He also felt uncomfortably with publicly displaying affection, at least for Nina.
He soon becomes much less precocious. In fact, he becomes a total child, being the kinda cliche cute little boy.
2.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
When Nina explicitly asked Kyou out and yet he later says (pretty far down the track) that Nina only sees him as a sibling...That makes no sense. Even if you ignore the second instance where Nina actually kissed him. I took the first rejection as him thinking he has somehow mistaken what Nina meant and the second (with the kiss) as him rejecting her because he already hag a girlfriend, though he now knew how Nina felt. But then he later says she sees him as brother? Nah, makes no sense.

My prediction went a little bit wrong in a good way

When I first read a few first chapters, I thought: "Well, another typical shoujo. This guy would date that beautiful girl, leaving this Nina girl chasing him forever. The couple will spilt up at some point and Nina will get the guy she wants". When Miyake-kun showed up, I thought: "Well, it's obvious that he likes Nina. They're gonna date and then break up and then she will go back to Kyousuke. After 10 volumns, Nina and Kyousuke would definately end up together."

And as I went on reading, it turned out that my prediction was a little bit wrong, which actually made me relieved and excited. After all, despite being a typical shoujo with the expected love polygon and a cry baby heroine, Tonari no Atashi have a slightly different but still a happy ending. The protagonist finally realized her true feeling and be with the deserving guy smile

However, this manga would be much better with fewer tears. I love the way Nina became more mature but does she really have to burst into tears almost everytime?

I usually reserve my 10's for a story I truly love. This happens to be a 9.8 but close enough! If you like steady paced shoujo stories then this is for you. This would have been an 11 but The main lead Nina was way to whinny at the start. Don't worry, either she grows on you or the stops being so damn needy... not sure which one it was. All I know I spent my whole afternoon reading this. The Ending is fair and not completely rushed as so many other's are. Makes you want more once you get to the end, there are 2 extra chapters which tie up a lot of thoughts. The characters are well liked, cute, and not one dimensional. Once again, give Nina about 5 chapters to let her grow up. Bottom line, if you are looking for a good read, then this is for you.

LOVED it but I also DREADED reading it

I love this manga! The story was great from the very beginning! I love Nina as a character, who developed and became more emotionally mature over time. I liked Kyou-chan at first but.. ughhh I really started hating/getting irritated at him and Asou... Yeah I know, it did start out as the typical shoujo manga with the childhood friend love interest and some two-faced antagonist but...

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
FINALLY, a story that ends up with the second love interest!!! I AM SO HAPPY NINA ENDED UP WITH MIYAKE!!! Although I really loved this story, around chapter 28... I also began to start dreading reading it because I was soo afraid Nina was going to end up staying with Kyou-chan when he was sick and screwing up her relationship with Miyake-kun (which did happen...) BUT luckily, the manga ends with her just staying childhood friends with Kyou-chan and dating Miyake-kun!!!

Kind of wish the manga had a little bit more of their relationship at the end... but I can't be too greedy, since the couple I preferred did end up together!!! bigrazz

Anyways, I recommend people to read Tonari no Atashi! It made me feel happy, angry and made me cry (in sadness and happiness) throughout the whole time I read it! Overall, a very emotional and enjoyable manga!
