this manga is more than a manga. its a vision, a carrier of hope, a testament, a prayer. i...after finishing this i am full of humanity, even with the ugliness and the despair, this manga make my heart race and just be greatful to be alive. how can i convey this feeling? for 18 volumes transporting me to a world that is both ugly and beautiful, introduce me to the broken but hopeful characters, make me full of anger and despair but still light a hope to me, it is too complete of a masterpiece. it end with a bang but still left abit for us to construct a new world in it.

there are some fault in that i can easily overlook. for example the characters have too similar of faces, especially the shape and the eyes, especially for 'pretty people'. theres no pure people left unviolated and dead, thus made me quite despairing for anyone with any ounce of moral to survive. but those gripes is too minor to consider after finishing this fantastic pice of literature.

im giving 9.9 because i dont like giving 10, but this is more like 9.99999999. one should read this!

just finished the last volume (in quite a rush, because I really wanted to know the ending)

And now I am staring at the screen, listening to "people get ready", and feeling quite sad.

I agree all coa88 said about it. This manga does not really lose its potential through the progression of the plot. Rather, the story is told in a really unique manner, I think it is different than most of the readers imagine it would be, at least after the first several chapters. (to be completed later..)
very bad, you could not start the reread just when you know their fates.

Plain and simple, Eden is one of the greatest manga I had the pleasure of reading. Mature and serious plot combined with great art give us a masterpiece. I only wish that Endo Hiroki's list of works is a bit longer.

One thing has to be said about the plot, it's very complicated and requires your full attention. There are many characters and all kinds of shit happens throughout the manga so you have to be on your toes constantly. There's world politics, science, social problems, crime and some higher agenda through entire manga. And when we add frequent references to the gnostic mythology to the mix... it tends to confuse you sometimes. So, I don't recommend taking long breaks in reading this as it will take time for you to get into the plot again.

The ending, I liked. Don't want to revel too much here but it felt somehow satisfying. Although the old problems are still present it leaves hope of better tomorrow.
Recommended read.

Like Crenshinibon have said, 100% correct.
It does require you to have some foresight on topics but it general focus on the philosophical side.
Please understand that couple chapters in people are dying like flies i do hope you understand that conflict with character growth and any sort of attachment to side character. All these character are persona of human in term of specific category in order to give a parallels toward the message of Eden.

so far the best, most unpredicatable manga i have ever read

one of the best at least.
the manga generally is dark, mostly with nihilistic, and skeptic approach.
unlike other mangas, it doesn't push to you what's right or what's wrong (for the most part at least), it leaves your own morals intact. a manga for the wannabe philosophers out there.

and just like i've said, the manga starts as dark, but grow into slightly lighter themes... black comedy is not obvious, but present. romance? subplot probably... BTW, im still on volume 13 so my comments are not conclusion...

~ definitely recommended!!!

I gotta say, I throughly enjoyed reading this manga and it is a must read for you mature manga readers out there. The characters are all very complex and the plot is never predictable. It never dragged on for me and it was one of those manga that I could not stop reading until I finished.

This is an intense manga. The art is beautiful(-ly realistic), as is the characters and circumstances.
Someone compared this to Eternal Sabbath; I feel that is perhaps a terrible comparison--on the same scale, I would have to say ES gets a 1 and Eden gets a 10+ (in plot, character development, pace...).
Many of the realistic aspects remind me of Crichton's novels (Endo=the Crichton of manga?).
Things people may complain about--"random" sex scenes, myriad and complexity of characters, lack of a hero--really just contribute to the realism of the wonderfully conceived world. Also, abruptness of characters dying (without a "bang") occurs throughout the series (which I love--the fact that Endo builds up and brings characters to life without treating them as precious glorified creations).
The story starts out slow, and feels fragmented, but the pace catches on quickly, you get absorbed in the exciting developments, and soon you'll be flying through each book! Everything is pieced together in the end, and although it may be a little anticlimactic, I think that's just how the entire manga is; there is no dramatic "bang" and there is no big theatrical finale moment--it feels like Endo wanted the ending to be as just another enduring day in this "endless world."
I think the manga's message is optimistic, though simply displayed alongside/through the darker struggles of life (and without giving way to it). I'm sure the interpretations can be endless, though.

I enjoyed this manga VERY much.

I think this manga is incredible, I couldn't let go of the books and read the 18 books in 2 days !...

When you start reading something, you often have an idea of how it will end, but here I was always surprised, until the end I wasn't sure how things would end up.
The subjects are wide and well linked, it is also an interesting thought about the problems we have: environment, war, drug...

But what I liked most were the characters: they are fascinating, complex and imperfect like real human beings. They strugle to go on, make mistakes... nobody is perfect and can always take the best of a situation....
Sometimes characters in manga match an "ideal person" (depending on the characteristics the author wish to develop) too much and loose humanity, but not here.
There is also no cliché with a "bad guy" and a hero.
The manga is also enriched by the number of characters, and even small ones are not neglected. Some say it is more confusing... well it also how life is, even if we interact with a small number of people everyday, a lot more can influence our lives (a litle, or greatly). The manga does not only tells the story of some people, but describe a situation and the number of people makes just it more realistic.
The work done by the manga on this part was great and really nice.

I think this is one of the best manga I ever read !

The author must be a real nut! This is beyond masterpiece. I can hardly imagine how he could link scientific issues and mafia stuffs and politics and actions and all other things. The philosophical arguments discussed in the manga are also very stimulating. A must-read for all manga fans!

Exceptional Story

When I started this manga I was expecting something vaguely similar to Road Warrior: end of the world, fighting to survive, blah blah blah. Something just to kill time. However, this story goes above and beyond, diving deep into politics, crime, religion and even quantum physics. I highly recommend this series. It addresses, from many different perspectives, the complexity of human nature. The story is vaguely similar to Eureka seveN, with the major difference being that there are no "heroes." Everyone is just trying to survive by their own ideals. For as long as they can. The gnostic tie-ins are quite brilliant as well.

The only drawback I would say is keeping track of the characters. There are many different factions each with their own connections. You can tell at some point that the artist had trouble creating a unique appearance for various side characters. The story could use a chapter by chapter identification guide on each of the newly introduced characters just so you don't mix them up. Hell, during some flashbacks you may have to wait to determine the sex of the character in focus.

All in all if you have the patience this story will thoroughly wow you.
