sweet melancholy

the soft art conjure a wistful image of their world adding on the overall impression of the story. the plot goes slowly with multiple flashback with the pacing very appropriate to the tone. though the characters are just 2 dimensional, the dimension that we see is enough where fleshing out more will be unnecessary.

recommended.

I reeaally love Sahara Mizu!!! <3 Her style of presenting the story is so unique and sweet. I've never seen the anime, and I really don't want to, because I feel that it will ruin the manga.... not in a bad way. Just that, it'll change the way I feel about the story -since it's presented in a different way. I like the quiet and silence in the manga (cuz it doesn't speak!!) --it gives a warmer feeling especially to a story like this.

Anyway, yess, I love Hoshi no Koe!

A great companion to the OVA

I was all set to dislike this manga before I started reading it. I'm a big Makoto Shinkai fan and love the Hoshi no Koe OVA, but I had my doubts about a manga. After all, the OVA is full of gorgeous art and great music, and it is really more of an impressionist work. That is, it does a really good job of evoking emotion from the viewer, but much of the story seems kind of silly when taken on its own.

I have to say that I was quite pleasantly surprised when I read the manga. Instead of spending time focusing on the space combat (which played well for the amazing visuals of the OVA, but would have flopped in the manga), the story spends more time developing the emotions of the two protagonists.

Viewed on its own, the manga will probably seem a bit insubstantive to most readers but as a companion piece to the OVA, it really shines.

I'll have to side with Marcus Svensson and say that I liked the manga better than the OVA mostly because the manga better portrays the friendship, loneliness, insecurity, love and ultimately hope, that the two protagonists experience. Despite the shortness of the story, it still manages quite an emotional impact. Even if you haven't seen the OVA, this manga is definitely worth checking out for the art and story. IMHO, even those readers who aren't partial to love stories might still enjoy this since the length is so short, thus keeping the sappiness at a minimum.

Oh my goodness, I've been looking for this manga for ten years (wow, I'm old). I don't remember the characters' names, but I do remember how much I adored the plot, the characters, and the themes of the manga. I need to reiterate: This manga stuck with me for ten years. It is phenomenal, and it makes a really lasting impact. Read it.

Great work of art and literature...

Like the movie, the Manga does not fail to disappoint. In fact, I like how the Manga fleshes out the characters much more than the movie does. Reading this, I came to understand more about the central characters and how they deal with their respective lives out in space and on Earth. Sahara Mizu's artwork is simply amazing and perfectly suits this bittersweet and melancholic love story of star-crossed lovers.
My only problem was...
Spoiler (highlight to view)
The cliffhanger at the end of the story that--even though it gave the two lovers hope--left a somewhat unsatisfied feeling in the "happy-ending-love-story" side of me. However, I feel that it is a sort of ending that leaves (if not forces) to you ponder the the themes of the story and the story itself.

I would prefer this over the movie but since it came after, I would recommend watching the movie first before reading this. However, if you've read this already then you should still give the movie a try. A great masterpiece created by a jobless man and his wife on his Macintosh.

I've watched all of Shinkai Makoto's films and loved them all. Hence when i first saw Hoshi no Koe in a bookstore, i immediately snapped it up.

Sahara Mizu's art is gorgeous and has a whimsical charm that matches with the fleeting and intangible feelings as shown in the story. A heartwrenching love that transcends time and space. The manga provides a much happier closure for the tale with an ending that gives us some hope.

Shinkai Makoto and Sahara Mizu, are they enough reason to make one read on ?

This is probably the only manga that's made me happy because I was so sad. Which totally doesn't make sense. The point is, I loved it - and the OVA - but they were totally heartbreaking. And adorable at the same time. Well worth reading, even if you're not usually big on sci-fi.

I am still crying, a half an hour after reading this. The story is so poignant. It grabs your heart with bare hands and crushes it with its melancholy longing. I found the development of the characters to be wonderfully slow and realistic. Their emotions come out beautifully during the manga's length. I would have loved to see a longer version of this manga. It would have amplified the experience. But, I am glad that it exists at all. The world would have been a sadder place without this masterpiece(at least for me).

I didn't know that there was an OVA which came before this. Will certainly see it.
