It's hard to say this, but imagine there are two types of manga readers. Ones who read just for entertainment and ones who read for that, but also really appreciate the history or artform of manga. If you're in the former group, there is a good chance that you will at least "like" Love Hina, because it's a good manga. However, if you're in the later group, then you ABSOLUTELY MUST READ THIS MANGA.

Love Hina is the definitive harem manga. It spawned countless imitators and established not only the genre but all of the tropes that went along with it as part of popular culture. That is to say, while not everything in Love Hina is an "Akamatsu original" idea (as the genre and some of the tropes go back farther than that), it's fair to say that it was Love Hina that firmly cemented them in the minds of manga creators and readers as it was the first harem manga to take off like a rocket in popularity.

There is really now way of knowing how much of a shot in the arm Love Hina was to a flagging manga industry when it came out, but if you were to say it revitalised it and inspired dozens of careers, you wouldn't be wrong. From the manga, to the video games, the products, the anime, the drama CD's... Love Hina was a cultural phenomena. If you appreciate and love manga and manga history, then Love Hina is something that you need to embrace as an incredibly important work that is still shaping and influencing manga that is created today.

Though not perfect throughout as it had its ups and downs in story telling and the ending though not rushed felt like a race to get through, its well worth the read. It's one of those stories like Ichigo 100% and I''s that's on my must read list for this type of manga.

In my opinion I believe that Love Hina truly started the era of Slice of Life and Becoming of Age manga. However, like many good manga, it started getting too ridiculous and it took a very long time for Akamatsu Ken to bring it back on track (if he ever did). Had 100 chapters been cut, it truly would have been a masterpiece.

This is such a sweet and wonderfull manga. About love and forfilling your dreams.
It really pictures the hardship of love. The rivality between friends, when they love the same person.
And of course the akwardness and embarrasment about finding out what It really means to love and epose feelings to each others.
Together with a lot off comedy and different occurrents the story progress on and never gets boring. The characters is also good and easy to understand. You get to know them fast and can see how they develop as the story progress.

Well, it may be a little to much fan service somtimes and the main character is kind of a cliche (a guy without any significant abilities and poor looks but with a strong bealive in his dreams and somhow gets a lot of girls). But the author makes It up by delivering so much more and making this manga very realistic and entertaining.

excellent manga

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
very disappointed that keitarou chose to go to america, and his sister seriously annoyed me

but other than that a very good manga, nice characters design and development. all the characters are lovable. quite a lot of fanservice toward the end. a very sweet and cute manga

i agree with some people that it could be better, some of the events were really unnecessary and frustrating, but because of my like toward the characters alone, i'd give it a 10.
considering that it was written in 1998, it's brilliant. very modern and relatable.

try it, won't be dissapointed

An extremely good Manga, this was my second time reading through, first time since I knew about Baka-Updates. Its storyline is very good though at times you will notice its a bit drawn out and they could have laid of the ecchi a bit... and by a bit I mean not an ecchi scene every chapter, sometimes multiple times a chapter... its gets tiring. Over all though definately give it a read if you like the Romance / Harem genre. Personally I find the Harem genre annoying as in my opinion it has never been done right from my current knowledge (I would prefer it if they made it so the male lead could at any stage go any number of ways rather then just with the character you guess he is going to go with from chapter one). This is not that much of a Harem as the main character never even partially develops romantic feelings for anyone other then the female lead.

I absolutely love this manga, and although some parts fall a bit short of my expectations, it is overall quite solid.

And regarding the earlier comment, yes it does feel a bit weak when compared to manga nowadays. However, it should be noted that this manga IS A LITTLE BIT OLD, and that back in it's day was quite revolutionary and spawned higher popularity for the harem genre and as such has been improved throughout the years.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
Love Hina was probably the first manga I read back in 2000 or so. At that time, I felt it was a instant classic, a 10/10, I hadn't read anything like that before and it stuck out in my mind. Now roll the clocks 10 years, and here we sit at 2010, giving this classic another deserved read. Well, I must say, I was slightly disappointed, as it did not live to my memories expectations, plus it seemed to have quite a bit of wasted potential.

The first few volumes were really well done in my opinion and taking into consideration when it was written, it was the standard of harem manga. It set the bar for all future harem genre, and Akamatsu really did a good job nailing the slapstick comedy/light romance, adding some unique and lovable characters with a cute and interesting plot. Fan service aside, most of the beginning was really well done. However, that is until you hit about the time Keitaro finally passes the exams. From there, it seemed to derail, get repetitive, get old, boring and stale. I can't really put my finger on why it did that so rapidly, but I kept thinking to myself, "Can't we just see them go out already!?". Or, "Why does she keep abusing him?" It got pretty redundant and old, and after you see poor Keitaro abused for the 100th time, its not that funny anymore.

However, as it added more (useless?) characters, and got towards the end, it seemed to shape up a little better, giving you a nice heartwarming ending, and a wedding scene! I'm a sucker for happy endings.

Overall, a little overrated by most in my opinion, being that its a stepping stone manga into the manga world, and lost potential. Either he should have cut it short, or took it in a more serious direction with the romance. I could recommend this to people quite easily though, its easy to pick up, easy to relate to, and the characters are hard not to love. Even though there are much better harem manga out there, I can still recommend this one if you don't mind a frustrating main couple, and somewhat of a repetitive comedy scheme.
