I used to drop Deadman Wonderland. I forgot the reason why, and didn't understand myself back then. This piece is enthralling.

The story gets interesting very early with obvious dark theme. At some points the story gets brighter, but you won't see that long; it will turn dark again after that for sure, except for one point in the story. Despite strange sudden changes of personalities, overall story is an uphill.

The is fast paced, sometimes a bit too fast for me. Flashbacks are wisely shown to keep readers attached even stickier. One thing that annoys me a bit is the 'sudden' twist with the real boss debut. Some periods of the story, especially the beautiful ending, are highly emotive. The length of the story is neither too long nor too short.

The plot is not that unpredictable; it's not like we cannot guess who that guy actually is and such. It still is, however, hard to guess about some important points. What I don't really like are the reasons of villains' wrongdoings. It's just, well, somewhat weak. You don't get a lot of explanation, but it gives that just at sufficient amount.

Some characters are so real; some are not, though all are intended to be. The fact doesn't bother me much anyway, because my mind puts all attention on the intriguing story.

The art suits the story so well. Kondou Kazama's art is full of darkness and extreme expression. The coloured pages are impressive.

To sum up, Deadman Wonderland is... surely breathtaking.

It's a really good manga. The art is nice, and it's not all about violence. The characters are likeable and it starts off in a confusing way, but it makes you want to read more to see whats going to happen.

Disappointed

If I was new to manga, I'd consider this one to be a great read. But it so happens that I've read dozens of long series, and this just doesn't get me excited. There is no real story. The plot background is promising enough, but as you read you notice that the story doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

I don't mind slow MC character development, as long as it is done well, but here it was both slow and poor. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear Tamaki is the MC of this manga. Also, the stereotypes just seem to nibble at my brain, it's that irritatingly noticeable.

The characters are bit bland and uninteresting. Sure, there are some that I got attached to, but when the story and the rest of the characters just don't compare to those few characters, the manga itself becomes boring.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Highlights: Where the heck did Scar Chain pop out of? Owl for MC!!!! Oh, they all exited the story all of a sudden. Mockingbird pops out of nowhere and he's supposed to be an important character. Barely any development. Uninteresting. Forgeries? Hints of a possibility of manufacturing Deadmen and all of a sudden they are ready to take the stage? Ooookay. All the Deadman are ready to fight cuz of Tamaki's extremely transparent trick? No questions asked? And all of a sudden the prisoners have a concept of "us"? Oookay again. And why the heck does Ganta sometimes treat Shiro like a kid and other times like an adult? Really confusing. Srsly, any drama that develops fails to have an impact cuz I can't decide if Shiro is mature enough to understand any drama is taking place in her life or not. And just cuz Ganta is the MC, the author expects me to feel sorry for him even when random stuff happens and he makes a face? No sir, you gotta put more development in there. And don't get me started on the girl who killed her father for the lolz.

I really liked this manga, caught up with it in one go, although the anime was quite disappointing, I couldn't stand watching it after 2 episodes.
Regardless of that, this manga is not for the lighthearted, the action, suspense, gore, this manga has tons of it, but it's worth the read

Chapter 11. Seriously man, this manga's really awesome thus far. I won't be criticizing all the plot holes, randomness, clicheness that people mentioned below since the story's still progressing. But so far man, I think its really awesome, I'm not even gonna lie. But i wonder, the title's Deadman wonderland (name of the prison), I wonder if they'll gonna be able to get out of prison. If they do, then it'll be interesting and the author can expand the story. If not, then I'm expecting the end of this manga by volume 4-5.

Anyway, its really cool manga, awesome plot twists, awesome fights, everything. Give it a try.

This manga has a very good and unpredictable plotline. The various characters each evolve throughout the story and some of them are even unknowingly connected to each other one way or another. Very interesting and a good read.

great plot and everything at the start...
but now all this seem's kinda over used...
usually shounen manga would be like this:
*some initial question's...
*solve this question...but this answer lead to more questions...
*new arc...go to step 1
and its like this...

but kinda solved some, almost none questions...
but i think the mangaka never had ideas to continue this manga after arc 1...
so...he hasnt new questions to lead us by...
and with this...this new arc... is mainly an filler...leading to nothing...and making us bored

Its so weird... I love it. Its so violent, and misleading sometimes, that you really start to understand him. When he finally gets to the point of thinking he can survive in there without too much psychological damage, something messed up happens again.
The art is really nice too, I think

I mean this manga is violent, but I didn't think it was overly violent. A violence towards an artistic aesthetic extent. Obviously, they'll be cliche's and certain things unexplained... this is, fiction, after all (to those bashing the manga already) and the girl poppin' here and there just adds to her air of mystery (which is what the manga artists clearly intended). I found the story to be elaborately developed but in a good sense, for their was little lack of confusion. So far, it's all a matter of taste... and I find this story to be more than just a futuristic retelling of gladiator's killing another; there's an essence of an allegory to symbolize humanity, maybe? or maybe I'm reading too much into it. But give it a try if this is your thing, you'll enjoy it!--- even if it is cliche in the world of sci fi manga.
