Traditional Japanese literature set in a romance manga
by Geese1
December 10th, 2008, 12:57pm
Rating: 9.5  / 10.0
Just finished this up and I've got to say this is one of the best romance-genre manga I've had the pleasure of reading.

There's so many things I found enjoyable about this that it's hard to know where to start. I guess the first thing that jumps out at me is how "Japanese" this manga is: from the traditional views of honor and family, to the snapshot of what may be considered the ideal Japanese woman (by traditional standards), to the thoughts of those who feel outcast from Japanese society; this manga is deeply immersed in all of it.

The story is both very traditional, and yet also quite uncommon in conventional manga. The feelings of love, honor and family which permeate the chapters give it a very distinct feeling that is surprisingly missing from much of the stuff that's out there today, and because of that it feels fresh and unique and even the traditional genre cliches are given a new spin.

It also helps that I found all of the characters quite endearing. Each one was fully fleshed out and realized, albeit with some gaining quite a bit more time than others, which is one of the few faults I had was the book. I did find that an extraordinary amount of time was given to a couple of the female leads, while others had decidedly less time devoted to them. Not to say that any of them were glossed over, because they weren't, but it is noticeable none the less. Still, with that one criticism aside, all the characters are quite charming and I find it hard to pick a favorite among the girls.

I must give credit to the writer too for not dumbing down what could have been a run-of-the-mill harem title. There are the various conventions to be sure, but everything feels natural and more grown up, like the author assumed the readers would be more mature and thus raised his own level to meet their expectations. Even something as straightforward as the ecchi scenes and fanservice (of which there is a lot) feels much more natural and I don't ever remember feeling like it was tacked on just to appease the male audience.

I've read some complaints about the artwork, which surprises me as I thought it was very well done, and was able to match the tone of the book quite well. It never overpowered the story and instead served to enhance it, which is how it should be. In fact, if you look at some of the author's more recent work you'll see that not much has changed between now and then, which is fine by me as I find it really seems to compliment his particular style.

Also a word about the Tokyo Pop translations: in the past I've been critical of the work they've done and the liberties they seemed to have taken with some of the original language, but here it seems like they were a lot more faithful to the source material. I don't ever remember coming across a particular phrase or a piece of dialogue that made me shake my head in wonderment, and I commend them for that.

So to wrap it up, if you're at all a fan of a more traditional Japanese story, or are just looking for a good romance manga with plenty of comedy and drama, I can't recommend Ai Yori Aoshi highly enough. While it could have spent a little more time on some of the female characters, it's still one of the very best this genre has to offer.

The characters in this manga are what kept me reading it. I couldn't put the books down until I knew that everything would turn out right. I'll admit it, I had a tear in my eye in the end because it was so emotional. The ending is so worth it, so stick it out.

IT IS completely scanlated

Updated the series info, please don't change...
Yep, series is completely scanlated as of now. You want the scans
you have to check out on FH.
And those are TP scans so I hope your alright with that.

As for the series itself, it's not your typical harem comedy where the main
protagonist is either indecisive or a complete moron and girls still flock around
him...nope Kaoru is diferent, he's both strong in mind and his resolutions and
is definetly NOT indecisive. All the charactes are given enough of a background
to stand firm and are very likeable and realistic. Even the antagonists have their
own motives why they're acting the way they do...they're not your typical I'm a
bad guy so I act bad...plot and storyline are ok and also arose from all the other
pointless harem series *cough*To Love Ru*cough*...

Overall a good series and worth reading.

Ai Yori Aoshi-my thoughts

I have to say that, this manga has been great. It was fully a love-story and the feelings the lead-characters had for eachother while they lived in the same building with new people coming in to the house, to live with them.
All of the characters in the manga had a different story behind them, and some of them had a similarity as their background.
The new thing for me with reading romance/harem/comedy tagged manga is that the main-couple is already deeply in love and they both know about eachothers feelings while trying to hide their love from the rest of the world.
Even with "missunderstandings" their love is strong, compared to what in other mangas quickly turn the loved person to hate the main-char.

This is one of my most favorite manga ever. Awesome storyline that breaks away from the overdone and cliche. It's still a harem comedy, so there's still some of the usual stuff. Great artwork. Maybe not at the beginning, but it gets better. This I believe was one of his first works, so Kou does get better. Some chapters of the last volumes definitely ain't for kids. I was so mad when Humanist quit at volume 10, but recently a guy at Franky House took it up. I highly recommend this manga. Lots of heart felt moments, good and bad, and a compelling cast of characters who you fall in love with completely. If you end up liking it in the least, you should also read Umi no Misaki as well.

Anyone scanlating?

Is anyone scanlating this manga? I enjoy it very much but according to baka-updates the last scanlation was over 400 days ago, and I can't find any newer chapters. I don't like reading mangas that don't finish scanlating, since I get really into good mangas then I never get to read the end. One of these days I need to learn japanese or something so I can just read the raws >.<

Stick it out.

Stick it out through the harem elements and other frustrating elements. The underlying story really comes out in the end and just makes it all so worth it. The beginning and end are definitely the strongest, and I couldn't put the books down as I went through the last three volumes. Best I've read, and after how I've felt about some series, that's saying quite a bit.

There are a lot of nudity in this manga but they haven't kissed once. I think the mangaka focused a little to much on the bobies but not on the face.

p.s:I stoped reading at chpt 17. I can't take it any longer.
