This series is pretty nice. It contains nice artwork and a good setting. I hear it alot that people critizise the lack of background knowledge, especially on the outbreak. Actually, the author put enough in there for someone who studies biology to make sense out of it. Actually there are poisons in this world, that can create similar effects. The psychology is as realistic as hell. Every psychologist could tell you that people would act that way. Well, the bath scene maybe was only for fanservice, but laughing it off, and trying to fill your mind with nonsense is how normal, untrained people would act in the situation of those youths.

On the bad side, i have to agree that the author should have added more information, especially no the reactions of every faction of the world. Honestly, with the nuclear arsenals on this world, if any such outbreak happens, I wouldn't be surprised if the surface would have turned to ashes. Since I like the base setting I'd rather have it as a novel than a manga.

Suddenly, without being given an opportunity to get to know the MC, or any of the few additional characters who quickly show up, we are flung into full slaughter mode. The characters have been so sketchily introduced that their danger from the slaughter that immediately starts raging all around them makes me say, "Who cares? Everyone's dying anyway. They are doomed for sure."

Then it's just more slaughter of strangers playing out, which the MC amazingly survives.

Apparently no-one ever taught the makers of this manga the fundamental principal that if you're planning to depict an apocalypse, you need to spend substantial time at the start establishing that this is the real world we know that is about to be destroyed, and, most importantly, creating characters who we can get to know and care about enough to care as they later struggle to live through many additional chapters. See "I Am a Hero" for how to do it.

As for the slight ecchi in the story, it's welcome in a story like this because it provides SOMETHING that is attractive and good in the midst of all the killing. In fact, all the killing is both so premature and so immediately overwhelming that I can't believe people can find nothing to complain about in this story except the ecchi. Are all young folks obsessive moralists these days?

And that's it.
At least it manages to make every other aspects decent to not get any downgrade from me.... beside that bitchy main heroine.

Wasn't a fan initially of horror and gore, but the hype surrounding the anime made me check this out. Not bad at first... but it really gets old quickly. I wouldn't even classify it as "horror" any more; I'd say it's become more of an action manga where enemies happen to be zombies.

Character and plot progression has also slowed down considerably. Seriously, having to wait for 1 month (or is it 2?) for a 30-or-more-page chapter with little development can be a bummer. It's really getting annoying how panels are wasted on gun talk or simply to have the characters look cool (seriously, an entire page of c.29 just to show off how they all look good in rain gear? XD). But yeah, that's a shounen manga for you (though I remember this being listed as seinen; thanks for the correction!).

I also find the ecchi to be inappropriate. Not that I don't like my ecchi (and I do!); it's just that HSotD manages to take it to ridiculous levels. I mean, turning a girl's chest into a machinegun firing platform? WHY? It really makes the entire ecchi part feel forced into the story. And yes, this translates to wasted panels which could've been used for development.

Overall, it's not bad; I'm still reading this despite the fact that I was initially reluctant about it (felt the same with Death Note... then I dropped it. WAAAY before L you-know-what, in case you ask) I just don't think it deserves all the hype.

PS: I mentioned a while ago that HSotD loses its horror quickly, so if you want a real zombie psychological thriller I suggest I am a Hero.

This manga won't satisfy hardcore horror fans. It's not really all that gory or scary. The focus is on story and characters, which is pretty good for this genre. What stands out most is definitely the art. It wouldn't surprise me if the artist took lessons from Masamune Shirow.

I like zombie mangas but this one feels like a resident evil with battle royale, can't put a finger on it but feels like "I've seen this somewhere before" kind of feeling and make it kind of predicatible.

I think the story has been well done so far. It has really shown the true human condition when faced with survival at the most basic level. Either people will give up, fight, or go crazy. Humans will also have a strong urge to reproduce (thus the echii scenes ... even with the same sex ... it is a release of tension) Ok ... enough psychology. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
