i'm a fan of the survival genre, and this one is cool. i'm also a fan of the shounen genre so i don't get annoyed by the shounen-y parts xD.
this manga's storyline isn't psychological like dragonhead, it is based moreso on plot-twists and the suspenseful atmosphere. also, the storyline is not just 1 continuous one, it's split into 3 parts - first when they're kids, 2nd when they're teens, and 3rd when they're adults. i like how they did this because it gives a more complete story of what happens to the main characters. you don't just see 1 big event in their lives, you see multiple. i also really like the premise of this manga. the idea that the future is low on food and also getting filled up of trash isn't in the realm of fiction. neither is the idea of a bio-engineered food source.
this manga isn't perfect, but rarely do you find one that is. it's pretty nice for it's genre.

At first, I thought this manga series was going to be a typical horror story until the mangaka came up with the concept of evolution and the ongoing horror of this man-created monstrosity. For the most part, all the main characters are not very dynamic, but gung-ho enough to make this series a real gem. The art and gore is very much like Gantz along with the element of tragedy and heroism.
Therefore give the first volume a read before judging it.

Not for me, but maybe for you.

The horror style is sort of similar to Critters (a really old but awesome horror movie, look it up if you want). The plot seems sort of like a cross between Resident Evil and Parasyte. My major complaint is that the characterization is poor, very "shounen-y", and the character development is also kind of ad hoc and thus not very believable. I don't really like any of the characters. Well, I liked the first few volumes best, naturally. For the duration of the first few volumes, I believed that I could start to like the characters, but it never happened. The narrative style sort of reminds me of Karakuri Circus in that respect. I'm on volume 6 but won't continue to read because at this point it's just a typical horror / action science fiction story to me (the plot is certainly better than almost every plot you find in a Hollywood movie, and it's certainly engaging enough to keep a normal person interested, but I easily drop stuff). If all you care about is suspenseful horror / action, or you enjoy shounen-y characterization, pick this up, it'll certainly engage you.
When's the next release?

At first, I was sort of skeptical. I read BakaUpdates' summary and thought, 'How predictable. What could possibly be so interesting about that?" Actually, I ended up really liking it.
The plotline is amazing, though sometimes a bit too shounen-y for my taste. Honestly, I find that the characters are kind of just used as a camera to show what's happening; there isn't really much characterization, and I don't find the drawings of people to my taste. However, the backgrounds, BioMeat, and just about everything else is drawn excellently, and the storytelling is really good.
It may not be to everyone's taste, but I really liked it, especially after chapter 10. Chapters 1-10 show how the characters have their first experience with the BM, so that it's all set up so that in chapters 11+, the characters already know some things about it and can take better action.
Edit: I totally want Shingo's glasses from the last arc.

Really a good series, if a bit rushed.
A Must read if you enjoy action, and some horror and gore, although it is mellow, compared to Goth, and Uzamaki.(sp?)(the spiral horror manga..)
Updated - After chapter 20, It turns into a 10. Wow, really great. I really can't wait for more. Whats gonna happen next? Chapter 24 is great, especially.
