The reason I've read this was because some claimed that the hunger games series was based on it. Whatever it is I think I became a fan of Battle Royale as well. Obviously the story is amazing. I liked the fact that we had glimpses of all the characters lives, It made it easier to relate. I also like how every thing is discussed in details like their feelings, and their relationships like how they connect to each other, after all they are classmates.
the author had to be genius to write such a masterpiece. I mean, all of the events are well planed. moreover it was easy to understand the actions of the characters and kinda forgive them, even the evil ones! Well in the end kiriyama (I think ) was my favorite and his past was the most incredible. Shyuua on the other hand I didn't like much, even though he was supposed to be the lead. I think he is absolutely reckless and unreliable which makes him somewhat a burden on kawada, he is trying to be the goody-goody but people keep hurting and dying because of him! even the good ones.
On the down side I think there are some pretty sick characters! I mean even if they were exposed to such a danger I doubt people get this mental, but what would I know. The art is detailed I give it that, its obvious that great effort was put into it. but I think it goes a little too overboard sometimes, especially with the violence. So i don't recommend this to young or sensitive readers.

This stuff is pretty intense, and definitely targeted toward adult males..... So when I first read this back as a young and relatively innocent eighth grade girl, this utterly disgusted me. Now four years later, I still find the portrayal of lots of things disgusting, but, I can somewhat "ignore" it for the story......
Well, for the most part, a lot of the psychology involved was very realistic, and while the physical portrayals of many characters were grotesque/ugly/gross, I was able to see the inner workings of human nature (not necessarily in a good light).
Sadly, all my favorite characters died. I cried quite a bit over them too...

Good adaptation from the novel, even though overly sexualized

I just recently completed the novel and since I was in that Battle Royale mood, I re-read a few scenes from the manga and picked up from where I left off.
My recommendation: read the novel if you can.
The manga overall is a good adaptation in that it did capture the world building and the mood of the novel. However, I still think that it was overly sexualized. Gore, I can handle, because it's part of the subject of the novel, kids killing each other. The gore facilitates the shock. The sex is however unjustified. Seriously, the artist drew the male sex organ big across one page. Gosh, I was so relieved I was not reading that part in public.
In the book, Mitsuko did not rape that anime guy. But in the manga, for some weird reason, the mangaka decided to do that.
My complaint about the creepy faces of side characters remains. I get that there are "ugly" characters but that doesn't mean most of them should look creepy.
Changes from the novel that I liked:
My old review from 2012:
Subject: Overly sexualized and unnecessary gore with creepy faces
This manga overly-sexualizes the whole thing. It is so nasty how the artist drew girls, specifically girl body. After an absolutely disgusting sex scene (I can't believe they drew this. Not because I'm against sex scenes but sex just makes this whole story so shallow and mushy. Battle Royale deserves better.) and because the character I cared about the most
Most of the characters (especially male ones) who are not primary characters have weird faces. Creepy and disgusting faces. It's like the creator wants us to not form an emotional connection to those characters. It's blatant manipulation so we only care about the main characters. The back stories of some of the side characters are interesting but the faces are just so... Ugh. Add that with the sex and gore portrayed in this manga. Instead of a great psychological thriller like the novel, the manga adaptation comes short as a whole.
To its credits, the manga did portray the main characters's stories very well. My favorite characters were Shinji Mimura and Shogo Kawada. I was so devastated when

- Sugimura found his girl and was able to had some time with her before he died. I really liked how the mangaka drew their dying scene. The graphic effect was amazing. I was impressed.
- Hirono had that hallucination of joining the main trio before drowning. This change was very good: right when you thought she survived, it turned out she didn't. It made an impact on me.
- Except for Mitsuko's background, I liked all the ways the mangaka extended all characters' backgrounds based on the novel. The extensions stayed true to the spirit of the novel. The changes were "canon" in that sense; you feel like you got more information about the characters by reading the manga, not conflicting information.

Extremely violent (and ecchi) but an interesting read. Definitely not a good choice for a first or second manga, but definitely worth reading after you've gotten the classic must-reads out of the way. Expect a lot of tears and heartache as you read this heart-wrenching trajedy.

Yes she was the lolita/blackwidow stereotype, but the switching between Mitsu the bombshell and Mitsu the broken doll was absolute genius. And yes, YES, it was fucked up. It was all fucked up, but it remained brilliant regardless of that. Sad to say Shu and Nori are my least favorite characters because I'm not sure you can retain that much goodness, that much sanity without any action at all. Mim did it the right way I think, the way it had to be done. He found a target. But I never really bought into Shu who wouldn't have survived the first hour without Kawada, as he said. They couldn't have picked a class with more problems, seriously, but the writing was good. And the art... the art...
As for the art, well ... the gore does get a bit over the top, which threw me out of it a time or two, but on the flip side it just wouldn't be BR without the gore, so you take those moments were there's too much spit/semen/blood/tears and roll with it. The tears was really what tossed me. They cried too damn much. I really expected more shock and less boohooing, but what do I know. I've never been in that situation myself.

Its really really really good! I think anyone who enjoy violence and drama will like this mangá. I know i did.
Its pretty amazing to read about how people would react in extreme situations like that... "what would i do?" you'll caught yourself thinking that.
I get really mad about the "super powers" that appear near the end, that's so dragon ball z!
Other thing that gets in my nerves is that stupid noriko who cant take care of herself... call me meanie, but i was hoping so much that she would die... lol
Plus, the end was very poor and the art was ugly!
But despite of that (dont worry, you can enjoy even thought all this stuff) its like a "must read" for the fans of dark, horror, psychological mangá.

Story/Plot
Battle Royale is basically about survival of the fittest, where kids have to duke it out with each other in a sort of "last man standing game". The problem with this set-up is that it almost completely removes the thought of getting attached to any characters because they usually end up the same way. However at least some of them are developed so well that you cannot help but get attached to them.
Artwork
The artwork is great in depicting a disturbing amount of gore and violence that you'll feel sick to the stomach, because the one thing this manga is famous for is going over the top.
Final Thoughts
Battle Royale is an excitingly, gut-wretching manga that will keep you on edge. It is really interesting how this manga was put together, as 15 Volumes, without the story feeling dragged out however the TokyoPop did mess it up a bit with their translations. BR is also one of the few manga out there that allow you to express so many emotions; from sadness, to frustration.
Unlike the similar manga "Gantz" BR has this lingering feeling of hopelessness that makes the story very depressing. With this really depressing story it can make Battle Royale less enjoyable to read but there's plenty of shocking moments and cliffhangers to keep you going. ^_^

Worthless Fanservice

After reading about 3/4ths of the manga, going over the original novel, and watching the Battle Royale movie, I can say that the manga stands a solid second place. It easily bypasses its movie counterpart, only because of its length... but really the obscure and ultimately excessive fanservice has ruined the face of this manga. Although it has nonetheless executed some very believable scenes, it falls short of what it could truly be.

It has a very unrealistic story that is very catchy. Its like a hide and seek where everyone is a seeker and a hider (someone who hides.. >.>) and they try to kill each other so they wont be killed in return. The plot is really intriguing and have you keep wondering about what will happen next... (well the general storyline is a bit predictable though). Overall, it won't waste your time.
Truly an intriguing page-turner. Let me preface my opinion by saying that I am partial to shoujo manga, but am open to anything that has a good storyline + great art and this is a prime example. The art here is truly unique and the story really takes you for a ride (in a good way)!
