Description
There is a Gothic-style mansion in a distant, rarely-visited part of Japan. There, the world's greatest surgeon, Naomitsu Madaraki, once lived but he hasn't come home in ages.
Instead, the professor's "daughter", Fran Madaraki, lives there with a large amount of her own ghoulish creations and her "younger sister" Veronica. She's a very unusual girl, what with the stitch patterns on her face and the giant bolts on either side of her head. Just as skilled at surgery as her father, and if you're willing to pay her price, she can do everything up to and including raising the dead. Fran believes ... More...

Franken Fran is one of those manga that will have you in stitches laughing. The main character Fran is a riot, and her attitude in how she approaches all of these requests thrust upon her, as well as the end result of such, are nothing short of hilarious. The gory, gross-out meets dark comedy is a unique approach to a comedic manga, and while it might not be for everyone, the people that it will be a hit with, it will REALLY be a hit with.
The art is very well done, and some of the Frankenstein-like creations Fran ends up creating at the request of her clients are morbidly gorgeous. The personalities of Fran and her small team of misfits she has created, and the interactions between them and her clients are always sure to get a laugh out of the reader. To wrap this up, Franken Fran takes the concept of "be careful what you wish for" to comedic extremes, and executes it flawlessly.

The characters are presented much sexier on the cover than in the actual manga. The manga itself is beautifully grotesque and deliciously macabre. With the exception of the Sentinel chapters, all of the individual chapters are good. As for the art, a lot of uncanny valley in this one.

This reminds me of The Twilight Zone. Most of the chapters are completely independent with the exception of a few reoccurring characters

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The Sentinel guys, Kohou the police woman, Adorea the organ storage woman
Category Ratings:
- Plot: 7 - Since it's episodic there is no main storyline but each individual chapter is great in its own way.
- Characters: 8 - Some have depth, but it is hard to find one that is easy to connect with.
- Ending: 8 - How does one end a series like this? I think the author did the absolute best he could have done. Small spoiler: Spoiler (mouse over to view)Basically the last chapter does a look back at all of the main characters in each story.Larger spoiler:Spoiler (mouse over to view)No, you don't get to see the Professor, which would have ruined the entire ending.
- Target Genres: 9 - The gore, comedy, and ecchi is mixed very well, and the science is done well enough to sound real (some is accurate). Most of the chapter endings were funny and some were really funny.
- Lasting impression: 9 - I really enjoyed the series and I'm sure I won't forget it any time soon.
My rating system:
- < 7 - I must have been bored to keep reading this.
- 7.0 - Just good enough to keep my attention
- 7.5 - Lacking in some areas
- 8.0 - Well rounded but nothing special
- 8.5 - Recommended for most
- 9.0 - Highly recommended
- 9.5 - Must read by all
- 10 - Stop reading this comment and start reading the series now

I really liked many of the ideas represented in this manga but it's a shame the author doesn't really expand on them. Instead, they're randomly represented in episodic occurences of Franken, regarding all those people she's met. Some of the stories are a mixture of slight commentary upon society and the human condition while the others are just for the fun of it. Still, the commentary isn't anything special or different. You could find better writing elsewhere.
Some of the writing is really random too and I also have no idea what happened to the cast. It seems many of the sidecast originally presented in the earlier chapters have stopped developing and now, exist only as companions who hang around sometimes. A darn shame as I really liked Okita and would've loved to see more of his character and history.
If you like horror and don't really care too much about plot or character development, then this is for you.

I hate horror [anything], but one look at the main character [Fran] sucked me right in! It has a perfect balance of horror, comedy, and morals. Yes, morals lol theres a moral to each story [generally..]. She loves what she does, and she does things for the greater power of love [and science sometimes lol]
Though some stories to have good endings, persay, some, like chpater 2, end in a different. . . way, with the moral still present >>
While i wouldnt call this guro, really, [if anyone has read the 'extra' at teh end of chapter 7 {even though its its own chapter of its own}] the fantasy 'movie' in it is sort of a guro-fanservice scene XD that made me die laughing
God i love this manga. XD

I haven't seen anything like this lately. It always has a lingering humorous feeling, yet the stories are often gruesome.
May leave you slightly shocked by the often sudden outcomes on each story, but wanting to see more.

Wow, this manga is twisted to the point that I am actually disgusted by the fact that I actually enjoy reading it. Not really into horror but this manga is really interesting. I find it more of a mind boggler than a visual though the art does a good job adding to the impact of the manga.

I have read many MANY genres and different kinds of manga, but this.. this just truly disturbs me. It's either a like it or hate the guts out of it kind of manga. And I really like it! The story itself is very promising and original and the art is interesting to say the least. The main attraction, however, is the way the story is mixed into the product. Most of the time you will be truly surprised by the turn of events and it will leave your mouth hanging wide open at the end of each chapter.
Kudo's for being so weird AND interesting at the same time!

...I probably enjoyed this series way more than I should've. Especially chapter 2.
Man, I need to get out more.
In regards to a comment down below - Chapter 3 had a good ending, and so did chapter 4 (Sorta).
