I read this years ago and remembered it being one of my favorite mangas at the time so i decided to reread (a mistake)

The art is so beautiful - it got me through the whole reread - and tanemura's world building is absolutely amazing

She builds such a surreal world with elements of a high school that feel fantastical without ever crossing the line and pushing it into full blown fantasy
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The scene where they eat McDonald's really did it for me because it almost starts to feel like they're in another world and then the author brings you back with all their realistic date activities

But over all the story definitely doesn't hold up the way i thought it would

The FL constantly refers to her self as "simple" and says she doesn't understand most things the way other people do - and the other characters call her stupid all the time
They try to make this a defining characteristic for her by saying that's what makes her charming - she's so straightforward - but it really doesn't work and is just upsetting to read

I'm really not a fan of the "she's so stupid it's cute" trope - it's super demeaning but they just continue to roll with it throughout the story

I wish we could've seen the FL being more of the beautiful badass instead of the cute bumbling idiot she was for most of the chapters

Also the wrap up at the end is very loose - which is somewhat typical of the genre - but if you're expecting the characters to explicitly work out their relationship problems you may not be satisfied

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I thought it was weird that a lot of the conclusions weren't actually said out loud to the FL - they were mostly written as characters' inner monologues
Such as the exchange with the FL parents where they address their relationships at the end when the mom regains her memory - the FL wasn't there for that even though it was her motivation for a lot of the things she did throughout the story - so is she even aware all her parents worked things out?
She can't read her bio dad's thoughts like the reader can so did they just have a conversation about it later?
Idk but for some reason this is bothering me way more than the FL ending up married to one but living with both brothers

All that being said this manga will forever hold a special place in my heart

What's with shoujos and the absolutely awful behavior that comes from the main character's parents? I mean my god, usually one of the sides has a bunch of out there drama. And the shit they pull is always forgiven.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The female lead's side was the absolutely worst this time. Her mother loved her biological father, but had to marry off to this other guy for money. Well, the biological father basically had to move on, but still had feelings for the mother. When it's finally confronted at the end, she claims she's fallen in love with her husband. I felt really bad for the biological father of the female lead who never actually finds out that this girl (female lead) he's bonded with and thinks of as a daughter is actually his daughter. I get you can't help who you fall for, but the mother doing that to the biological father was kinda fucked up. She was just forgiven for abandoning him.

The ending is also a little off...

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
She has feelings for both Takanari and the real Shizumasa and actually proposes a polygamist relationship. Neither of the boys want it though. She then dates Takanari, but they have problems because of her split feelings. She feels guilty about it and when he proposes, she decides to give all her love to Takanari. They get married, but have to deal with the fact that Shizumasa will live with them. Not because she still loves Shizumasa though, but Shizumasa wanting to live with his brother to make up for what I assume is all the horrible shit that was done to him.

Like most mangas, the beginning is a little boring, and I thought it was going to be one of those super cliched mangas, but once the drama starts it gets to you ><

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Even when Shizumasa is revealed to have a twin (Takanari), it doesn't get to that annoying love triangle either. Also, when each character personal story is revealed, it makes you care for them and understand their actions ;-; Like Maora and Ushio.

One of the biggest reasons for me to love this manga is that there are multiple couples, each one having their own unique story <3 Anyway, totally recommended!!

One thing i really liked about this manga is the story line and how the characters fit each role perfectly. Haine, the main character is one of the strongest heroins i have ever encountered in manga You'll fall in love with her optimism, cheerfulness, strength, kindness and determinism. This manga has some deep words about life and uses quite a bit of metaphors but that is what makes it so entertaining and amazing! The other characters that surround her are also very well introduced and created. Together, these characters is what really carried out the story. I also love how the story was all resolved and answers all your questions!
The ending:
Spoiler (highlight to view)
I got a bit confused as to who she chose in the end because after she marries Takanari, Shizumasa comes back and says "i never said i'd give her up" BUT after reading the epilogue it came clear that she does indeed love Takanari a lot and that she knows shizumasa is using her as a "pond" so he can have the chance to try living with his big brother, Takanari again. She loves no one but Takanari and that is made very clear in the Epilogue so DON'T MISS IT. I love how Shizumasa was actually a good guy in the end and just wanted his brother to be free (by allowing himself to die by his illness). but nevertheless, they were both granted freedom THANKS TO HAINE, you rock. haha.

Awesome Read! Definitely a 10.

Edit: The art is amazingly beautiful!

i lluuurrrrvveed this manga! it was so cute!!!~~~
i found out about this manga cos i was in the library, at the manga section, and all the other mangas had pretty bad art (==), so i chose gentlemen alliance cross, even though it was the second volume. i finished it that night, and when i finished it, i was alll 'kkkyyyyaaaaaaaaaaaaa<3 SO CUTE!'
i reckon one of the best things about this manga is the great art. i loved it smile. i've read heaps of manga and manhwa where the art is, well, not that great, but this manga had the best art i've seen yet biggrin.
i reckon the story was pretty good, and all the characters are pretty LOL-worthy, and the relationship (in terms of the twins) was something i havent encountered before, so that was a nice change of scenery smile
i loved this manga cos it was mostly happy, and really, really funny. the only thing i would have wanted more from this manga would have been to have more scenes and art of the time when they were in the dancing scene (formal dresses are cute !^^) but even still, i loved this manga, and whoever out there loves funny, cute romantic mangas should read this one <3

the author makes the main girl soooo stupid naiive at first.
the beginning was sort of confusing and could have been made alittle smoother.
i mean....it would be understood wayyy better if it started from chapter 9.
well that's the only problem that i had with the series.

as the story started going, it got better and better!!!
the art is pretty good, too!
check it out! check it out! CHECK IT OUT!!! biggrin

Excellent Series

This was an amazing read... It started out a bit lackluster, I suppose. Too many characters all introduced at once and too much going on before I really settled in and could follow it all. A few volumes in, I was hooked! So many twists and turns in the plot - I was expecting a simple high school romance, and got a lot more than I bargained for!

However, I felt the ending was a little... disappointing. It was almost as if Tanemura took the easy way out and tried to make everyone happy when, I'm sorry, but a certain person in this story doesn't really deserve to live happily ever after...

Not to mention...
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Shizumasa is forgiven of all the crap he's pulled throughout the entire series and makes the RIGHT decision to study abroad and leave Haine to Takanari. That makes the whole "I was a dick through the entire series, but now I'll be all nice and live happily ever after with everybody" thing kinda pass. BUT THEN he shows up at the very end, at Takanari & Haine's wedding, for pete's sake, to rain on everyone's parade and try to steal Haine from Takanari all over again. WTF? Can someone please punch that guy out and maybe drop him off a cliff somewhere?

Speaking of which... There were definitely some pretty outlandish parts in the last volume or two. And, again, Tanemura wusses out on what could've been an awesome Big Rescue scene... :( So disappointing.

But even with those foibles at/near the end, I still would say this is a top notch series that any shoujo fan would be remiss not to read! smile

I loved this manga soo much! <3 soo much that i usually pick this manga when i tell others about cute romance mangas.
It was coincedential that i happened to accidentally (that's right, an accident) kick the second volume of GAC at Borders. The lady at Gloria Jeans death stared me down and so i was sorta forced to read this book at first. Like all manga, especially those that have some confusion in them, not reading from the first volume is a fool's mistake. I read volume 2 and although i was literally screaming and swearing at the ill-natured emperor guy (that is before i started thinking he was pretty cute >~<) i had to admit, this manga was really captivating. I re-read from volume one and things began to make more sense. There are scenes in this manga that sometimes makes you want to hit Haine with a golf club becoz its cheesy or she's just making a total fool of herself but that's whats good to have in a manga that also has a little tragedy in it. I thought it was a little cliche but cute when she changed from the yankee because of Togu (or so she thought^^) and when she realised she loved the guy who really drew the book, i was like "awwwwwwwwwww". I thought it was a little sad how she found out what happened to her mum at highschool and how she thought her step* dad was evil and wanted to rescue the sorta crazy mum from him, but when she finds out the truth and the three of them are lying like dead corspe as the building burns (burn baby burn) it was sad in a cute way. I gotta compliment Tanemura for her drawings, pretty much all her shoujo mangas that have been a great hit (full moon, GAC, KK-Jeanne, Mistress Fortune & her newer ones like Sakurahime Kaden) have fantastic drawings in them. I really like both the guys and girls and i truly think she has a talent like no other because her drawing is so fabulous and unique unlike some artist who share similar art styles (which get confusing when u try to identify who drew what). I just really think that GAC is a great manga and that anyone with a taste for romance, cute characters and more shoujo shud deff read this one>>>

Good luck

I thoroughly enjoyed this manga. up until the end that is. I would have given this manga a 10, but the ending... ARGH!

Spoiler (highlight to view)
It would have been better if Shizumasa remained the antagonist. I also would have been more satisfied if the ending wasn't so sugar-coated. Not that I'm against their happiness, but that just way too superficial. And the whole thing with Haine being "shared" between the brothers just angers me... !! >_<

I should never reading endings... they kill every series for me.
