I Agree With Everyone! It's A Must Read

I agree with everyone. Basara is just amazing. The story telling and all makes you want to have more and more, althou it was hard for me to read it at first because of the art. I love the forbidden relationship between Shuri and Sasara and the rest but I wish that Ageha would at least have a happy ending... well he does...in a way... Anyway it's a must read. It's the greatest and best manga and one of my most favorites.

this manga is one of the best i’ve ever read! the art in the beginning can bother a few, although i loved it from the start lol. Anyway, everything is well-written and i couldn’t find a good story like this in a while for now. Strong and captivating characters, good romance, no unnecessary drama! 10 today, 10 tomorrow, 10 forever for this!!! give it a try even if the beginning is a bit slow paced.you certainly won’t regret it later.

Best Manga In History

Basara is truly the best manga I have ever read in my entire life. I've read athe least 200 mangas and I have never read anything like this.

Sarasa was truly a female lead that I rooted for and was proud of. She had so much character development and is the most idealistic female lead of the shoujo genre. I love the relationships she builds with her friend and Shuri. She is so strong and good at what she does, but there are times when she fails. However, she always gets back up.

All the characters were absolutely perfect and I couldn't ever find a single flaw in them. I really want to find another manga as good as this, but I don't think I will :/ this was written in the 90's and a lot of the good mangas are from back then. Nowadays, I can't find any good quality manga except for Skip Beat or Akatsuki No Yona. Sigh, the time I spent reading this wonderful gem was really fun and emotional. All of you reading this comment needs to pick it up NOW.

LOVED IT

The main character is downright badass--sacrificing her own gender identity for her town's vengeance...Not that this is recommended, but it shows how good of a person she is.

While the story is a tad melodramatic, I enjoyed the whole entire thing. The ending was just so sweet!!! biggrin biggrin biggrin

EDIT: I just recently found out that the author of this series also wrote my other favorite series, 7 Seeds!!! No wonder it felt familiar somehow.

While I prefer 7 Seed's storyline and emphasis on multiple main characters, I love the epic journey of the two seemingly star-crossed lovers here too! Kudos to the author for being such an awesome person!

It's predictable yet still keeps you on edge

It's predictable. Once you read a few chapters you understand that. The development is also predictable but the way the mangaka has put it, and all those tiny details in between are amazing. It transforms the whole thing into a fairy tail. It's definitely a must-read.

I started this series a while ago, I loved it, but never touched for 8 years. I finally got around to rereading it and watching the small anime adaption. Still gold
Finding a heroine in a shoujo manga that is truly likable is hard enough, but finding a manga that allows the male lead to actually mature from a great character to an epic one is tough. I love Sarasa, Shuri, Ageha, Asagi, ChaCha, Hayato just every character thats makes its way into the series is so likable in their own way.
And the plot. Epic fantasy is my favorite book genre, and for a series as long and complex as this it definitely lives up to the hype. (though not much to the fantasy aspect to the series except for prophets)
Cant really put into words how good the plot is. (its gets a bit overloaded with the regions of japan so that was a bit confusing)
Overall I'm really happy i reread the series from the start, and that it was still as good as I remember it

Basara

Basara, where can i start? It is wonderfully flawed and naive but throughly enjoyable saving for few parts. The manga is really long and i found it a bit tedious to finish. What kept me going was the side characters and i really could not warm-up to the romance of the manga. Spolier alert: I am unable to understand how the two mains can fall in love so easily. I am not a romantic so forgive me. I would have enjoyed the manga more if not for the romance all though that is the integral part of the story.
Story wise it is not new or unique but at the time of release (1992) it must have definitely been a welcome change from other shojou mangas of that time.
i would recommend it for a weekend read if you don't have anything better to do.

btw i loved asagi and nachi <3

This manga is so 'Epic' that I feel bad if I don't leave a review on how EPIC this manga is. The romance is nothing I've ever read before. It's the plot and the dynamics between the characters that make this manga stands out from the 'mainstream shoujo'.

An advice to first time readers who aren't familiar with Tamura Yumi's works, don't let the 'old school shoujo art' clouds your judgement and skip the first volume. I got the same impression when I first read this manga, thankfully, I kept on reading until the scene where...
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
..The Red King is actually Shuri, the guy that Sarasa met at the hotspring

Then I realized, things will get heated up since the whole plot revolves around the 'Enemies become Lovers' and 'Secret Identity' trope, it's amazing how Tamura sensei managed to keep things interesting for 27 volumes!

The ending is probably the most satisfying ending I've ever read..all the knots are tied, the mangaka even covered stories about the side characters. Amazing. *Applauds*

Thank you Tamura Yumi for creating such a masterpiece....actually, I can't thank you enough, your mangas have brought so much happiness to me!! *throws out random fangirl rant*yes! She is my manga idol! For those who enjoyed reading Basara, be sure not to miss reading her on-going manga 7 seeds. It's as Epic as Basara but, BETTER.

My entry to the manga world

Basara was not only my first manga, but also solidified my love of shoujo manga in a quick one-two punch. I have extremely fond memories going to the library as a young teenager and getting volumes of the series to experience. The story is iconic, and filled with emotion; Basara will take your heartstrings for a ride you will never forget. Sarasa is one of the most strong willed characters I have ever read in a story, and many other characters share the same characteristic, especially Ageha. The amount of heartache, sacrifice and endurance on display from both the protagonists and antagonists (with one of the most iconic love stories in manga) moves this story from great to masterpiece. The characters are some of my favorite in the medium, and are fleshed out better than most real life people are. Pick up the first two volumes and just get a glimpse of what this epic tale has to offer and see if it hooks you the same as it did myself and many other manga fans around the globe.

If I had to recommend just three series for someone just getting their feet wet in the manga world, this would definitely be one of them.
