A Thousand and One Nights: Shounen Manga style

Yes, it is a shounen. That can be seen miles away. There's friendship speeches, fights, fanservice (for both girls and guys), and the like. But it's a very good shounen.
A story based on the same book as Disney's -Aladdin- (but nothing like either), Magi sets in a wonderful Arabic setting filled with magic, mystery, djinns (genies), flying carpets, good vs. evil, powerful kings and generals, and much more. It's a fantasy world that makes one want to fly around on a turban and see the world.
There's character development, plot progression, and steady growth of power. The main guy will obviously be the most powerful, but he isn't there yet, and he doesn't get there by random means. He is helped by those around him to defeat stronger enemies, and he grows in power. Same goes for the other characters.
There are very strong moral issues raised in the manga, that, while dealing with the content of the story, portray real life. The whole magical vs. normal power is reminiscent of technology vs. "the good old days" views. As someone else mentioned, issues like slavery, crazy families, abuse of power, manipulation, and all sorts of things in the manga are very real issues in our world. It makes the manga interesting and different than mainstream shounen -- but of course, it's not mainstream.
And, of course, one of the most important aspects of any manga (IMO): the comedy -- it's really great! Some parts had me rolling.
Edit: Dropped the series, despite my raving review. The arcs were becoming extremely long and I did not care for the ridiculously drawn-out flashback arc. Humor was almost non-existent during the long battles and convoluted drama. Still, the manga is definitely a work of art.

I like this manga. It is different compared to other hit shounen like Bleach, fairy tail and naruto in many aspects. Although I read the first 2 since I have been reading them from beginning. I can say Magi is certainly different. The first thing about Magi that is different is the reason for their fight, unlike those 2 above (dunno about naruto) which has competitive fights which cannot really be comprehended along with their regular power ups in every arc with more stronger opponents magi is much more reality based in its characters and I hope it sticks to that in future. It shows the dark sides of human like greed for money and power, jealousy, inferiority complex, frustration over social standings....etc. which leads them to do bad things and as a whole puts most antagonist characters in grey area. War, Conquest, slave trading...these where things which actually happened in history of the real world and still happens. Yes it has morality speeches like other shounen but then again it is a fact that without morality there will be riot.
Secondly the characters are not overpowered and I hope they remain like that. For example the use of magoi by finalis is limited and magicians has weak physical defence these resemble more like RPG games. so ppl who compare this to FT are certainly wrong. I just hope this doesn't go with asspull powerups in the future.
Solomon's wisidom which is a power of omniscience is powerful enough. Although Aladdin haven't really mastered it yet. I only hope he is able to refine that and not any other new power in future

This manga is amazing. At first it looks like typical manga, where you will conquer everything, in this case, "dungeon". But, after the first dungeon, that is the beginning of the story. You should not comment about this manga until that part. Especially because of annoying alladin and the ladies part, it's just a little joke.
This manga full of everything. Moral, intrigue, action, and everything. Recommended.

Wonderful, solid read. Last arc seems a bit forced though, the flow from before seems to have been lost a bit, and so is my interest. Nevertheless, definitely worth reading if you are looking for a quality shounen.

this is my favourite manga of all time plus a few others but still. it broadened my horizon of manga when i read it. i love all the characters from magi and my fav character is pisti. the drawings are wonderful and it just gives me the feeling that this is the manga i've been looking for my entire life. i love it.i believe that this manga is way better than the top 4 manga's of the world (thats what i call it. one piece, naruto, bleach and fairy tail and yes fairy tails up there for those who didnt know) the story isnt too dark which is great. ahh... this will always be my favourite manga probably.

So "wotonito" said epic word " something along the lines of "... Miraculously no one died." Wow the friend of Ali Baba, Kasim is truly died. Are you truly read this Manga. Its not plot-less like Fairy Tail, its all about morality. Yes its truly Shounen cliche with moral bullshit, If you don't like this read Gantz, Berserk, or any other seinen instead. Its more feels good than any other shounen bullshit out there. Face it this is shounen there's a moral obligations for Author to give something like morality, friendship, etc unto the story. And this Magi - Labyrinth of Magic is one of the good shounen with good plot not just battling and reup like any other shounen out there. And please dont be so annoying little child commenting without reading. I will not rate this until the story is End. And i believe the Author will gave me more great reading than any other shounen especially 3 bullshit shounen you little kid love.... :p

Magi is a shounen series that started off decently, got better, and then degraded so rapidly that I got whiplash.
For a series with the subtitle of "Labyrinth of Magic," you would think there would be ample, well, labyrinths. Well, too bad, because after Magi hit its midway point, it seems to throw away all pretense of a fun, campy adventure full of dungeon-crawling in favor of some really convoluted politics. Now, I'm not a fan of genre changes, but Magi really takes the cake with how bad this particular genre change is.
In a word, the politics is godawful. It might be the worst I've ever seen--and I've seen a lot! Maybe if it doesn't take center-stage so often, I might be more lenient with it, but it does, and it's awful, so no.
The mangaka also has a tendency to derail characters in favor of really crass "comedy." And while it might have been funny the first time around, the nth reiteration of Aladdin's perversion and Alibaba's desire to find a girlfriend is just overused and bad. I can't like any of these characters because of how grossly they're portrayed in these contexts--and they never grow and develop to, you know, respect women. Instead, the whole thing is continually treated as a joke, as if it's something to laugh about rather than frown at. The whole thing is just really tiring for me, especially because, as I said, it derails both personalities and development in favor of a cheap laugh.
All in all, Magi has become a chore to sit through nowadays, and if the mangaka continues this way any longer, I might have to stop reading for the sake of my own well-being.
(Please go back to feel-good dungeon-crawling, Ohtaka, please.)

For instance, Ren Koumei's political ideology makes no sense. His assertions that people want power and, thus, he will unite the world in order to facilitate peace do not connect with one another at all. Even on a surface level, these two ideas don't coincide! In what world does having a single ruler automatically mean all power struggles will cease??
Not to mention how difficult it would be for a single person to govern an entire world. Like, really, Koumei will have to appoint governors and shit anyway to take care of different parts of land, and power struggles will happen in that case. And, of course, if your people are unhappy with your rule, revolutions also happen, and these revolutions are far more likely when the country is big than when it is small (just look at Alexander the Great!).
Finally, the whole premise of people can't understand each other and just fight for power is just so inherently flawed. People don't just pop into existence thinking "I WANT TO RULE THE WORLD." There are actual reasons why power is so desirable, and only by understanding these reasons can you understand why people fight. The way Koumei is thinking is extremely lazy because the thought that "people are just inherently evil" solves absolutely nothing. It simply obscures the real problems within the social system that pushes these people to fight. And the only way to prevent more fighting is to get to the root of these problems and solve it there. Not to just look at it on the surface and go, "Well, maybe if I just conquer everyone." Like what??
The worst part of this scene was the fact that Alibaba wasn't able to respond to Koumei's ideas at all. These are incredibly simple and shallow ideas that he could have easily refuted with a word or two. Instead, he's shown as not being able to give any conclusive answer at all. ESPECIALLY because Alibaba is probably the only one in the whole manga who has chosen the "correct" choice in terms of political ideology when he decides to turn Balbadd into a democracy. Forming a democratic nation is clearly a radical idea, and the fact that Alibaba does it shows that he knows enough about what the people need to do it. But now he can't even refute a simple "lol i'm going to conquer the world because [insert shitty reason]"??
Oh, and don't even get me started on the terribad ideas of both Sinbad and Solomon, both of whom the author tries to make charismatic but both of whom just turn out to be jackasses instead. (I know I'm not the only one who confuses the two and wants to punch both in the face whenever they appear.)
