This is one of the few mangas I read about witches. Interesting ideas, nice character design, likeable characters and this manga has some good and detailed art. I read the first 9 chapters, and I think the character development of the male protagonist is pretty good (i.e. in just 9 chapters, although I am expecting much better development in future chapters) and the chemistry between the male and female protagonists is really good; they are pretty cute too when they are together. One "drawback" is that this manga is getting slow releases in Japan (I heard that it's a bi-monthly release? But the mangaka gets more time to work on this magnificient manga). This manga gets from me a temp score of 9 out of 10 (in the hope that there will be a deeper story/plot so it could mature into an awesome manga).

This series has a slight Alice in Wonderland feel to me with the way certain protagonists have exaggerated behavioural styles and the antagonists have fanciful incomplete approaches to taking on Ayaka. Hopefully Honoka will begin to justify his presence as the only male character with any appreciable time in the story. So far, he's been a wooden character only doing things needed by the plot as opposed to having the character drive the plot. He needs to be more than well-armed driftwood floating wherever the currents take him on the sea of fate.

Scanlations in english have also been released for Witch Craft Works on the /a/ subforum of 4chan as a community effort by whoever is in the /a/ subforum and is interested at that time. Translated releases on the forum are accompanied by the archived translated release on mediafire DDL. Chapter 05 was released Jan 27, 2011. Chapter 07 was released on May 28, 2011. Chapter 08 was released on June 03, 2011. Chapter 09 was released on July 13, 2011 with a simultaneous mediafire DDL.

I always find it amusing to some degree w/ the gender switches roles. In this case, the heroine, Kagari, is a towering Amazonian woman who is smart and pretty much perfect, except that she doesn’t talk much and would rather just coldly get rid of any nuisances like burning her enemies alive. She will also often carry Takamiya in her arms princess style.

Takimya’s personality isn’t quite cowardly, but he tries to not to get involved w/ the most popular girl in the school because of the bullies. However, once he finds about who Kagari is, he does seek knowledge to help her in her fights. I do feel for the guy though, because Kagari refuses to tell him why all the witches are after him and why she is protecting him the first place. What is the “white stuff” that the witches want from him? In some ways, this is one of the things I don’t like about this series. We’re left in the dark about this as the reader so the plot is nothing but about a bunch of either sexy looking or cute looking witches fighting each other. Hmm, kind of like “Sekirei”.

The artwork is ok. The disparity in the sizes of the heroine and the guy is a little disconcerting. I’ve read series w/ tall heroines and cute petite heroes. But this hero is just the standard looking guy, w/ an emotionless Amazonian that has no qualms about torturing the enemy for information.

Honestly, I’m not sure if I like the series yet, so I’ll wait until a couple of more chapters and see if the questions get answered.

The series has already been on for a year in Kodansha's Good Afternoon Magazine. Keeping in mind that Witch Craft Works is released 6 times a year, or once every two months, I think we can safely conclude that this series penned by Mizunagi Ryuu-sensei is pretty much, going to continue. There are 7 confirmed releases in Japan already. This means that, if there ever was a 1 year or 6 issue trial, then that trial has been successfully overcome.

As to what makes Witch Craft Works the way it is, I wouldn't know. It has an undefinable element. Well, whatever it is, it managed to capture my interest, and a lot of other people's as well.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it unique. Maybe its just the attitude of Kagari. Her face is inscrutable. She's so deadpan, yet she delivers jokes with a straight face, sometimes even in a derogatory manner at Takamiya's expense. She makes fun of his weaknesses in her own way, but she does it all with that same, expressionless face. You'd think that her face was made out of marble cause it simply has no expression, not even when her "princess" is in danger.

Anyway, I liked this series so much that I begged Animexis to allow me to work it.

Story interesting so far. hopefully the author continues to develop the backstory between Takamiya & Kagari. in terms of action its kinda like "weak protagonist who becomes strong but gets protected by secondary characters". This could turn into a harem situation with all the witches that go to their school. There is no solid long term goal for the protagonist so this may turn into a short seriaization

man this series is really interesting so far with a great artist, im really hoping that this series keeps getting better and lasts a lot of time cuz the editors keep axeing a lot of good promising series too early so i hope this dosent get axed too early

We could say that this manga takes the cake for fantasy high school stories. I loved the "My princess" part - it was a new fresh breeze to cool my aching head from all those cliches that have sprung up recently. Oh, and the main heroine - apart from being insanely gorgeous, princess like - is inhumanly strong, inhumanly heartless and has, what I believe to be, a subtle sense of humour.

Found this title while desperately searching for SOMETHING to burn the time while the numerous other series I read update (if they ever...) and end up instead with yet another one on my reading list that I check nonstop for new chapters. The artwork is on the higher scale in quality and the story itself is warming up (as of chapter 3) especially with the heroine calling the hero "My Princess"? A future gender bender tag perhaps? Let's just hope that the publisher will keep this one afloat and let the story develop further.

EDIT: Story developed (kinda) and now the manga is just frustrating. The bad guys never get punished enough despite their actions and the protagonists are always three steps behind it feels. Not to mention the majority of the "good" team members are incompetent as hell. The long pauses between chapter releases (by the publishers; NOT blaming the scanlators) further frustrates me as I have to read the last two or more chapters just to get my memory back of what the heck is happening.

The characters are well drawn. And although I'm wondering why the main character, Takamiya, isn't as curious as I would want (though I guess that's alright since it's only been 2 chapters), I'm amused at how much he values Kagari without realizing himself. Kagari-san is really cool. Definitely cooler than Takamiya-kun, lol. His honoroific "my princess" is a pretty interesting twist, looking forward to finding out the truth about it!
