I started out really liking this but by vol. 17 I can't stomach it

So, let me start by saying that this novel has a lot of very good aspects, through the first 10ish volumes I really couldn't get enough of it, but the MC is just no good.

First of all, human beings are not made such that they can sleep only 2 hours a day and then go out and seize the day every day of every month of every year; the only thing that will get you is in a hospital or an early grave, and I don't care how long you've been training in some dojo.

Second of all, the MC's a scumbag. He constantly swindles other innocent people. The first few volumes I was able to overlook it, saying: "oh, he comes from extreme poverty, and he isn't really hurting anyone too badly" but by vol. 17, I'm almost rooting for the monsters trying to kill him. You would think he'd understand the importance of charity, but swindling other people is the motivation behind nearly every action he takes.

Third of all, and the largest factor in why I dislike this MC, is that he's basically an abusive parent. Almost every interaction you see between him and his creations, outside of battle, is a form of physical or emotional abuse, it's disgusting.

Additionally, by vol. 17 every battle's just the author singing the MC's praises, "[he's just soooo goddamned cool, you don't even know; every move he makes is elegant and everyone who sees him fight just cannot believe that such a perfect being exists]." Women want him, men want to be him, and monsters take one look and prostrate themselves before his grandeur. The world exists solely as a medium for his greatness; naught but an ivory tower for him to sit upon and gaze down onto everyone else.

This really had potential, and there were some characters that I actually did care about, but I cannot stomach any more of that scumbag MC.

See the comments by tallrice and entelejent for more.

This Novel is amazing. Specially so if you have played fantasy games and MMO games. The only problem is the translations, it makes it so hard to enjoy and understand what the hell is going on. Constantly changing character names and halfassed explanations that make no sense. Still worth reading, and if an english version ever comes out, I may consider buying it, if the price is low enough. P.S Dont listen to TheMagicKnight kid below me. He seems butthurt for no reason other than the novel didnt go the way he wanted. Crafting profession in the game allow you to have several proffesions to make up for the fact that they are weaker in combat, because leveling up proffesions will give stat boosts. The whole martial arts vs gamer thing would only apply in a game like those we play today. This is a virtual reality game where things like real life experience and state of mind can make a difference since the game is not much different than real life but with some tweaks, ofcourse this is all science fiction, but its part of the story and I dont understand why it would upset you. The game has a hidden agenda behind it (games creator its a bit like that dude from SAO) which I wont spoil revolving around the emperor which is how he got his hidden class which explains why his class is so good. Even then there are characters in the game much stronger than him, Bardray the strongest guy in the game has several dozens of thousands of high level users and millions of NPCs under his control. The only thing I agree with is the whole being poor backstory which the author abuses a lot in the early volumes but knocks it down a notch later on when the main character goes to africa and sees those who had it worse than him. Also Shield hero is nowhere near as good as this.

Ok kenken2692 you say you feel the emotion in his tragic life allow me to tell you something its a bunch of BS since I have lived a similiar life like his until 2 months ago and I ain't a sick money grubbing abnormal physic strength like and I also love my family another thing the author of this book problably just took some of this BS FALSE emotion tragic story from some soap now on to the main subject I would like to say wether or not you add. legendary or moonlight to a sculptor he is still a sculptor and comparing RL to a VR is retarded just because your strong in reality doesn't necessary mean you will be strong in game if a gamer and a martial artist were to fight in a game the gamer will win since a martial artist will use RL skills while a gamer will use game skills. Now allow me to tell you another thing a game is always fair therefore if you believe some guy will get skills that will give him power like a cheat no one would play a game like that it matters not whether it is a hidden class or a common class no one can have such skills another thing is to take,5 professions and master them is impossible and the quest he does and completes he always somehow has the right stuff and level when he needs it this is nothing more than an overated pile of crap I enjoyed hero of the shield more than this since I have up at volume 13 and your right I did more or less skimp it from volume 8 because the anger I felt was so deadly my brother was scared I gave up since it was boring bunch crap thank you for listening(if there is something wrong with my spelling its because I am typping on touchscreen phone)

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Epecially TheMagicKnight Once I read your complain about the novel it was not like you said once I has try to read it. I think u are one of those type of reader who just scan throught a book and not really get it..because if u really read the novel u would understand and have no complaint like u did. First of all he is a sculptor but stronger than warrior. He is not a just a normal sculptor his profession is a hidden one called legendary moonlight scupltor. It is the profession of the late emperor who once unite the continents. He said he was so strong that he became unbeatable that was the main reason why the main character accept the profession. He also did mention the moonlight sculptor profession has suck combat ability in the early volumes that was also why he say he regret pickin the profession. The reason why he so strong is he work hard on gainin many extra stats and skills as he can than others while other just focus on levelin up. Don't forget he got the upperhand in combat than others because he train his body out RL too plus he got much more experiences when come to combat also he is clever and he got talent in battlefield and leadership. What do u mean u don't feel any emotion about toward the main character proverty. U can clearly see through his hard life. His and his sister personailty when it comes to money related epecially him u could say his is rotten to the core but still a nice guy at heart depend on situation and toward who tho. About you u sayin all the girls are fallin in love with him is so not true. There girls who fall in love with the guys he know and they became a couples. While tho there are a few girls who are in love him but it never went in too deep about it. They are totally one sided as of now. He never really care about women because he think they are a waste of money so he never really have the intention of startin a romantic relationship as of yet.As of now all his focus is on money and family. Last I don't get how u can say he defies logic when he complete high diffculty quests that nomal human failed. First of all the quests is there for someone to complete it mean it not Impossible it just has high degree of diffculity it is all depend on how one would complete it and don't give up midway. It did say there are lots of people who give up in the middle of the quests because they think it impossible while once he accept the quest he would not give up and would use his head to figure a way how to complete the quest that was just how he make wat others think impossible to possible. All I want to say is this novel is aweome I got so into it that I spent the night reading it ..it takes me less than 3 days just to finish up to it lastest release volume. (From volume 1 to volume 22) I WOULD REALLY REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF SOMEONE CONTINUE UPDATE IT MORE SOON. IM WAITING FOR IT.

This series is simply overrated. The person below me jjkyxr explains it brilliantly.

The best stories go by the words, "show and not tell" but this author tells us every little detail. Even if his story is unique and interesting---it shows his bad writing/story crafting skills.

I love this novel - particularly the MC and the fact that the story shows every single detail of his epic adventures. However, I sometimes feel as if one part is too long? For example, the objective would be to kill this one mob, or etc. The story then continues to explain - in full detail - about an unnecessarily long ride it took there, such as a bear came out of nowhere or they decided to stop for a break and explain what happened during that time. Yeah, no. Wish it would get to the point faster.

An exciting adventure

This is what the best of the shounen (LOL, even though it's classified as seinen) genre is about. A character that you can still cheer for despite him being not much of a good guy. More like, he's a rotten bastard to all but his two family members. Weed has many things in common with the MC from Zippy Ziggy. The author's writing style and the solidity of the plot and story progression can be criticized to no end, but when you are enjoying the excitement of a player growing in skill, wealth and fame, using unorthodox methods of interacting with people, having abnormal views about things in general, being selfish and unrepentant above all, going on dangerous and exciting quests, riling up the virtual and real world with his numerous exploits, etc. etc. then you can't help but be absorbed and consider the points of criticism to be insignificant and not worth the attention. At least for me, that's how it is. You need youth and an adventurous spirit to enjoy stories like this. If you get obsessed with the minutiae of the story, you'll miss out on this amazing ride. Too bad about being able to read less than half the content actually released. They say the author will be getting the rest of it published in English officially in a few years. So I think I'll be back to update this post around 2017 or maybe 2018, if nothing goes awry.

It was fine at the start but the more you get into it the more stuff repeats and it gets kinda annoying. I only got like 6 volumes into it but from what I can tell it feels like reading the same thing over 6 times. The same thing keeps happening, the main character never does and never gets pushed to the point where he needs to do something unexpected. The development of his character (not talking about the in-game character) was non-existent. Last but not least, the game is as imbalanced as Kirito. He's playing a hidden class, okay! I get it! but that doesn't mean the class should be overpowered to the point where everyone bows to him. They mentioned something about having ~20+5 attributes or something per character (art, blacksmith, repair, etc...) someone with an crafting class and half his attributes in crafting stuff should not be stronger than a combat focused class no matter what.

tallrice's review (10 or so posts below) nails it wonderfully. This story is very disappointing considering it's high rating.
Also I would like to add how horribly designed the video games are made in NAM Heesung's universe. Both Continent of Magic and Royal Road would be TERRIBLE games to play in and would never amass that many players even if they did hold a monopoly with virtual reality tech. Only the most autistic players or beta testers would get rewarded in these games. Fame/Exp bonuses for first discoveries.. are you kidding me? Any game that supports 'Dark Gamers' (the term the author uses) is bad game design. Good games eventually force players to group up to access endgame level content leaving no options for MC Lee Hyun to mysteriously grind away by himself in a corner doing endgame quests by himself.
NAM Heesung's vision of gaming is terrible and it makes me wonder why so many people enjoy this story.

Battles on an epic scale but...

Moonlight Sculptor is the definition of epic, from the quests to the story-line, however numerous errors in the translation and editing as well as the sometimes convoluted nature of the story keep it from truly shining.

For the pro's, I thoroughly enjoyed the different climaxes of the seemingly impossible quests undertaken by the MC, as well as the author's insistence upon smarts over brawn as being the answer to many problems. I thought it was pretty novel that the author focused on large-scale battles many a time which helps the series stand out from others in the same genre which focus solely on the MC's combat abilities or a small group of similarly strong characters. The seemingly unending supply of different creatures, myths and quests did alot to keep me interested.

On the con's side I didn't find the MC's personality relate-able or like-able in the least, although I did like his skill-sets. The story is also fairly complex with the author jumping in-between 6 or 7 different plot lines at points... as in focusing on a character's real life circumstances, then jumping to a in game quest, then jumping to a different character's circumstances.... it was really just excessive. I couldn't care less about half of them and they only seem to be there to add to the grand/epic scale of the novel rather than adding legitimately necessary or interesting ideas: sometimes more isn't better. Also, as others have commented already, some (read most) of the translation reeks of some kind of translating software and as a result, the beauty of the writing was lost in translation, unfortunately.

All in all I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and would recommend it to a friend if they had time to kill. The errors in grammar made me drop the series for a while, especially during the earlier portions of the translations. The series takes a while to gain momentum and some chapters are better than others (grammar-wise) although the later translations are far superior they are still lacking. I'll continue to follow the series to see where it goes in the future.
