The plot is boring and it seems it not moving forward and the gags are repetitive, right now i started reading Re:Monster which has all the things i wanted from Gamer , a serious plot , real survival battle .

Pretty Good.... Need to catch up on the chapters.

Being a casual gamer myself, this webtoon is like my ultimate fantasy--and the author has done a good job of depicting everything thus far.

It's still a pretty new series and the plot has not advanced very far, but I hope it will endure the test of time! Go, the Gamer!

p.s. lately all my favorites seem to be Korean webtoons... (i.e., Tower of God, Cheese in the Trap, Noblesse, Fairytale of theDemon Lord, Wake up Deadman, ...)

Dull

Mediocre artwork and a painfully slow story that feels like a grind combine to make The Gamer an easy series to drop. Some things in particular that I hated about the series included...
  • The author's need to explain every detail regarding the main character's gamer ability. The adage, "Show it, don't tell it" seems the best way to describe this failure in storytelling. 40 chapters in and the characters' still can't stop repeating, "this must be because of your Gamer ability.
  • The characters themselves are !@#$ing boring: the main character is repetitive, his best friend lacks personality, and the black magician's daughter is forgettable outside of her curse. Everyone else might as well not exist for how little the series cares about them.
  • The strange bits that don't belong.
    Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The Ogre's Tigerskin panties being the most recent case. It's a stupid gag in a series that doesn't need it.

Literally, its one of the best webcomics i have read and since im a gamer myself i enjoy it x10 compared to a no gamer.
Even tough that there are a few mistakes from the illustrator in this webcomic regarding some skills of the protagonist, they are passable. An example to this would be the soul recovery that without soul stone should say only hp recovery. this was a mistake that was mentioned in later chapters.

I like it.

I think this webtoon is really refreshing. I think that maybe people are expecting to much from something that only has 30 some chapters so far. After reading everything that has complex and long and dragging plots that go on forever, The Gamer is light and refreshing. It is also sort of funny when you catch the little jokes and references thrown out there.

Something that I like about this that isn't like others I have read is that instead of the main character being transported into a game or living in a reality where everything is a game, the The Gamer has it where only the main character sees reality as a game and no one else. That's pretty unique and different to me so I don't know why people are complaining so much.

But all in all I think it is pretty good.

Fun but Nothing Special

People giving this a high rating are probably not used to the multitude of Korean RPG-based novels that fill word count quota with stat stats and more stats and how awesome the hero is compared to the rest of the world, and how hardworking and dedicated he is. The only difference is the medium and the setting being the real world. I am not dropping this yet, since it is still too early and so far it has been entertaining despite the nagging sensation of having read the same thing elsewhere.

Really fun but people are complaining

I really like The Gamer, its an entertaining read and I look forward to it every week or so, but like with SAO there's a fence between people absolute fanboys and those that say its boring and unoriginal. I mostly have a problem with people complaining about a series being similar to another and how this somehow makes it bad.

So first, the story is about a gamer who gets powers like from a game, except not magic but the actual console (and some magic too) along with skills and an (awesome) inventory window. For me this is a first but there may be others who have seen similar works, big deal, nowadays its becoming hard to create a truly innovative story that deviates off from typical genres or cliches, that doesn't make it any less enjoyable.

People say its slow paced, maybe some people want action all the time but I like how this isn't really building up anything special (there may be some but I'm just enjoying it). Its just the every day life of an in game gamer, there'll probably be something happening later but for now I'm enjoying this kind of atmosphere.

Amazing?

Wow, what a rating this manga has!

I can't help but to be amazed because I feel no connection between the manga and the rating. My apology, but well, I really don't expect that this manga could have a rank this high for long enough.

Here is my brief review after read 20 chapters and so,
The art: Well, good enough
The plot: good, but not hard to predict... the premise that the MC has "cheat" ability and later become an "almighty" keyplayer (truly, I think this kind 'overwhelming' of ability will only set a good premise first but will shallow the plot later). and well, no damn twist, because of this "cheat" ability. If this manhwa in the end will only talk about of beating out villain, well, damn this manhwa...
Character: no unique character that I found special and likeable, just average forced-to-be-unique-kind of student...

I wont say that this manga is bad (because there are many manga that worse than this manhwa), and it still contains a few chapters (so I hope it will develop more). But, once again, I just amazed by its rank...

edit: btw, please don't easily compare two obviously different manga on the same level. Briefly, One Punch man is epic and hilarious. It's epic because The MC will come and fight when the situation is really dire, and the art cover the awesomeness of the MC "single-punch". No twist, but fine... it's already compensated by its epic-ness. It's hilarious on its gag jokes, (and I found nothing alike on this manhwa)... and... 1/2 prince too (is it really comparableconfused). Well, sorry for babbling too long, but that's my point.

It is what you think it is

The predictable jokes, references and comparisons to MMORPGs are all here as expected. But the execution isn't bad. The art is likewise just about average for a webtoon, with lots of lazy frames but its not unattractive. I think people are riding either too high or too low on this series when it's just niche appeal series that's easy to follow because it doesn't take risks.

Common concept, intriguing application
by ra4ael
March 4th, 2014, 11:45pm
Rating: 10.0  / 10.0
Decided to add some explanation reading some of the average/mediocore comments. The whole virtual reality genre/premise has been overdone - SAO, 1/2 prince, LMS, Ark, (DICE adding a faustian take) etc etc. There is key difference in this case though. The MC is not spirited away into/playing the game world, and the game world is not invading reality, but the character is the only one referring to reality as a game, and this clash of perception makes the whole application interesting and unique against the supernatural background.
Then again, the unique application and lighthearted comedy is the only thing really going for the series, so I will rate just my enjoyment from it, as usual.
