Description
Akuma to Love Song revolves around an unusual girl, Kawai Maria who was expelled from her previous school, St. Katria Girls' School, and soon transfers to Touzuka High School, a public school with low standards. Her sharp tongue and straightforward personality leads everyone to hate her with the exception of two handsome boys who eventually get involved with her. With a devil's aura like hers and an arrogant facade to pair it up with, it's just too hard to be understood. And so Maria needs to deal with bullying, adjusting, fitting in and romance. Just how will a devil like her cope with all these predicaments?

It started off really great...
Rating: 7.0 / 10.0

...then quickly degenerated to a heavy, gloomy, overly dramatic story saturated with the most annoying shoujo clichés on the face of the earth (i.e. crying every five minutes, love rivals with a huge vendetta against the main character, random comedic moments thrown into random sequences in an attempt to lighten the mood BECAUSE OF all the drama, etc.).

As far as the bullying goes, I'd like to just throw a few things out there. The likelihood of an entire class plus the teacher turning against one student is pretty non-existent. Many of things that were said and done to Maria, however, are actually pretty spot on when compared to some of the actual bullying that goes on in the Japanese school system. That's not to say that Japanese students are horrible, because bullies are bullies no matter where they come from. However, group conformity and cultural homogeneity are both very important aspects of the Japanese culture (which actually isn't a bad thing majority of the time), so standing out too much or being 'different' can result in some pretty severe treatment. Bullying there is on an entirely different level than anything that most people are used to--and becoming progressively worse as of late. Than mangaka did a really good job with this aspect of the manga. The bullying that she suffers is a bit on the light side when compared to the real deal. I'm dead serious...

Also, Maria's odd mindset and questionable tolerance towards mental, verbal, and physical abuse basically stem from some serious trauma that she suffered as a child. I've been reading the releases in Margaret magazine, so at least that much makes sense to me now. What's killing me is that the author totally could have used all those events to her advantage and made for an exceptional story--had she stuck with her original formula. But she instead opted to take the standard shoujo drama route and put a damper on Maria's unique demeanor and outlook on life. How disappointing...

unbelievably nasty bullies

It's very unrealistic how nasty her teacher & classmates are. The school quarrels are pretty over the top and silly. But I like some of the themes in the manga and the level of complexity/twistedness of some of the characters. Sometimes the "burn the witch" attitude is pretty unbearable for me to keep reading without getting overly upset though.

Started off well but, ...

The beginning was appealing. However as the series goes on the behaviors and conversations tend to become irrational and stupid. I really can't keep up with the logic, and I don't think a whole class + their teacher + could get so cheap as to join in this type of conversation.
Its a bit too childish? maybe? like they're all in elementary school or something. And just when I thought the bullying cliche was over it started in another way.

But if you're the type that likes heroine resists bullying etc. you could give it a try.

Had promise...but failed to deliver

Started out really good but then gradually got worse. It becomes overly dramatic and the heroine who was originally a strong character turns out to be ignorant and delusional and has a extremely warped perception. You can argue that it's because she is humble...but there's a limit to how humble one can be before they're mistaken for being stupid. What's worse is that she's stubborn too, so she's set on being in denial about almost everything. Frankly, this manga becomes very irritating to read. I'd recommend reading the first 15 chapters or so and then just drop it because the plot is going nowhere.

I just love this manga! The girl is always composed and super honest. Other call it personality problems I call it honesty. She doesn't go all two-faced, more like she tells them what's in her mind and all. VERYY TOUGH. At first I would've thought of her gothic but now I do see how beautiful she is(as a manga character). This is definitely a must read!!!

this manga is soooo good! you wont regret reading it. At first i couldnt get in to it because well... i though Maria was weird... but now she's one of my favorite Shoujo Heroines ever! She's cool, blunt, not wimpy, strong, cute!! she's so cool!!! and Megu... GOD i love him!!! i do like the other guy but we all knew that she would be with Megu, and he wasn't much of a threat, its not much of a love triangle we just know the other guy is crushing on her. But we all know who we like better, the other guy is more of a friend

I can't get enough of how brilliant this manga is! For instance the art!!!-most times I have to look at it twice, just to lap up the nicely done character poses! And the humour is fantastic too. I love the plot line and I love how the mangaka discusses the complexity of each individuals' personality. And I love the unique characters in the story too!

overall, loved it.

*waits anxiously for new volumes* XD

This manga had a quite high marked, that's why i picked it up. I found the girl bit bizzare at first..but i think she's very frankly and had a very unique mindset. It's quite refreshing to see such a strong gals like that..

TOTALLY AWESOME

i love this manga so much, i also feel i am like her, smart with a stupid mouth. i couldn't wear a mask to save my own hide, that's probably why i love her so much. her honesty and bluntness make me love her even more. it's annoying though that it's a love triangle because i really hate love triangles. this manga though is really about the darker side of the human nature, which i absolutely ADORE! but what i find funny is that she can't see herself at all really, she's kinda of oblivious to certain things that seem really obvious. she's also cute in a weird way. i get pissed off though and seriously want to kill some characters, like really kill some characters, especially that a-hole teacher! but it makes me feel an even deeper connection and empahty for the main character. definitely an AWESOME manga, probably one of the best out there. i actually wish there were more characters like her in manga. blunt, honest and no-nonsense. 10/10

But tis one`s really good, both the art and the story. And it has good bits of humor and mystery, so even if you are a fan of other genres you can still enjoy it and have fun ^^.
