Description
From Viz:
Although a truly gifted hairstylist, Kiri Koshiba has no interest in using her talent to pursue fame and fortune, unlike the three popular boys in the "Scissors Project" at school. Determined to become the best makeover team in Japan, they give showy makeovers to handpicked girls. As much as Kiri tries to shy away from the Scissors Project spotlight, she finds herself responding to beauty's call...
Note: Beauty Pop Stage 2 is from volume 7 to 10. It is a continuation of Beauty Pop. This is because they were published after the hiatus. The whole series ends with 10 volumes.
First of all let me say i'm a guy and because i'm a guy my rating will obviously be biased. I came upon this manga because i was searching for a different female character, i was sick and tired of cry babys and that sort of lot. Kiri makes this manga good. If it wasn't for her and her particular way of life, so to speak, i would haver never, in a million years, read this story. I managed to overlook the theme, the other majority of the cast, who are annoying to be honest, and the tame plot because Kiri is amazing! That's not to say that it's rubbish, it isn't, i actually enjoyed the last chapters, but it was so over the top. Still it's a lot better that several manga i've read, it doesn't have the: oh does he like me? oh what do i do? sort of dialogue and plot that annoys me to no end. Give it a go for you won't find many more characters like Kiri.
Most people seem to either love this one or find it really dull... To be honest I picked this one up once and got bored only to return in another couple of months for want of something to read.
It's true the romance comes slow and late and not in especially hot-n-heavy rushes. but once you get to know the characters you realize that this was the only way to proceed with it. During this theire tender moments were that much more enjoyable.
The story can be a little over the top, but it had to be if it wanted to work. Realistically, a story about hairdressers/beauticians would not be that climactic... (Iori and his aromatherapy makes me shake my head every time)
Once you accept both of these things its actually really sweet and easy to read. (Oh and imagine that every time a new rival appeared it was like a coin operated fighting game, it makes it funny.) I enjoy the diversity of characters even if they were slightly extreme examples. Narumi really charmed me after a time and continues to be my favourite even though through the first few chapters I found him annoying.
Stick with this one if you want a fun, silly, light read and you wont be disappointed. If you do stick around the ending is all warm and fuzzy and tied up with a bow.
Note: This review is for Beauty Pop and Beauty Pop Stage 2
A cutesy story about hairstyling. This story has a tendency to veer toward the extreme (mostly in characters) and I’m guessing will be either liked or disliked by readers. I myself found the story enjoyable but not one of my all time favorites.
Plot- A fairly simple plot, become the best makeover team in Japan, of course it doesn’t stay simple for long when you throw in people who want to stop their plan and of course love triangles. But even the opposition wasn’t all that complex and the love triangle came late and wasn’t to major a part of the plot.
Characters- All the characters seem to be taken to the extremes in their actions, but it’s kind of fun to read so their extremeness didn’t wear me down. But Kiri did get on my nerves a bit later on; she was too uninterested in anything! She shows hints at her true feelings but she… just didn’t seem to care enough at the time. Thankfully a time skip ahead showed some of her true feelings and helped her seem a bit less uncaring. But still the main character seemed like it was less Kiri, who got a little dull at times, and the main character felt like it was more Narumi, who I was more interested in reading about because of his more interesting reactions. As the story progressed the story gathered a lot of strange people into its plot, and while that’s not bad and was sometimes interesting it was also sometimes annoying and I wanted just one semi normal character now and then.
Art- It was all right, it wasn’t the greatest but it worked for this manga so I’m satisfied by the artwork even if sometimes I felt it was a bit lacking.
Other- I don’t really remember being bored with this manga while I was reading it but looking back I can see how some people could become bored, the plot does get a bit repetitive and I can find how some people won’t like the unusual cast of characters who do wear their likability a bit thin. Be warned, the romance isn’t really there… not until later chapters and then it felt more like one sided affection (until the time skip at the very end that is…), so don’t start reading this expecting a lot of romance. But I still think it’s an interesting story that if you’re thinking of reading and have time to read you should definitely do so!
another manga i love because of the characters. i really like Kiri-chan. she's not your typical female character so its kinda refreshing. i was a bit disappointed of the romance though, its just too little romance. i was really looking forward to Narumi and Kiri's romance. however, i like the last chapter especially the extra story. so cute. well, i do hope there is a sequel to this where they are all grown-ups. i think it'll be interesting. ^_^
It's one of the best I've read so far (I'm on chapter 40). The main character (female) aka Kiri is awesome. I've always "dreamed" of such a female character in all those mangas I read and was annoyed. Narumi is funny, surprisingly enough not annoying at all. The others are cool too. I'm glad that the romance is slow, and that it's so unusual (for example, the boys is not "in control" like almost everywhere else, he holds her and she doesn't die of blushing), it's more real somehow, and those scenes where she helps everyone and all that, it's not too fake and annoying like in most of the other manga. I just roll my eyes to those scenes and skip them or just stop reading. Even if it gets "worse" in the last 11 chapters, it will still be one of the best I've read because it's different and the Kiri is simply a dream come true.
After like 5 or 6 chapters it got so boring and there was no romance at all. I mean how can some1 be interested with just cutting. Also i don't understand y she would hide her talent. Its not that funny either and I found Narumi to be so annoying
This did not leave me with big warm fuzzy feelings. It was cute but cheesy. There was no depth to the characters everything was just surface appeal. The art was well drawn.
^_^ I really loved ths manga! All the dreams and determination and the CUUUUUTE Naru and Kiri moments ^_^ I would've liked a bit more romance but the ending was so CUTE I loved it anyway! Great!
What's really amusing about this series: the guy and girl's roles are reversed, personality-wise. Actually, Kiri isn't that much like a guy except for the indifferent and bored part but NARUMI acts hilariously like a girl. When he's starting to panic over whether he likes Kiri or when they accidentally kiss he's just... so much like a girl.
Anyways, cool manga cuz the heroine is just SO cool and awesome. She's strong and not the one head over heels in love (on the contrary, a bunch of guys are madly in love with HER and she doesn't even notice/care... until the end). It's about beauty and hairstyling which is interesting. Really cute with a lot of fluffy moments too of Naru xKiri.
Although there were moments when I was like 'this mangaka should tone it down a little...' cuz it's so unrealistic and makes me roll my eyes when a guy's going 'I like her? No way! Do I really? That's not possible!' etc.
As a matter of fact... it's kinda rare to have a girl superior to a guy. really. that's what that has kept me reading this manga. and the fact that it also has it's focus on hairstyling, it made me more interested on it just like 'Skip Beat!' to showbiz. I like it.
I may not be that in to hairstyling but I might learn a lot of things that life might teach us in person someday, right?
True. there are chapters that made me wanna skip. only that i have to bear with boredom, i made it to the interesting part of the manga. it's totally awesome.
I admire manga with a heroine with so much power and impact. nice personality too.
i like it. that's why i'm planning to really finish it..
