Shinichi Kudo is a high-school student who, by using observation and deduction, is good at solving mysteries. While investigating one, he is caught by the criminals that he was watching and forced to take an experimental drug. Leaving him for dead, the criminals disappear. Instead of killing him, however, the drug turns Shinichi into a little kid.
To preserve the illusion of his 'disappearance,' Shinichi adopts a new name based on his favorite author (Arthur Conan Doyle) and becomes Conan Edogawa. Ran, his (actually Shinichi's) childhood friend takes this little boy under her wing and brings him to her home.
Conan now lives at a detective agency run by Ran's father, but his mind is as keen as ever and he continues to solve mysteries... always allowing Ran's father to take all the credit.
As far as everyone's concerned, Conan is just a little kid anyway... even to Ran. This is *extremely* frustrating to Conan since nobody will listen to a 'little boy.' Despite this, Conan has a mission... to find the criminals who did this to him and get the antidote to that drug.

Note: Won the 46th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōnen category in 2001.

collection of mystery stories
Rating: 1.0 / 10.0

As you can see from the number of chapters, this is not a typical manga. It's more accurate to say that it's a collection of mystery stories involving the same characters. There is no overall development in the story or characters. You can jump ahead 100 chapters, and not see any significant changes in the story. Conan also does not change or learn; he is the same person in chapter 600 as he is in chapter 1. I found this style very repetitive and boring to read.

As for the mysteries, with very few exceptions, they are so unrealistically complex (often involving tons of props) that there's no way you can solve them alongside the character. So, each chapter becomes nothing more than a brag about how smart Conan is.

I strongly recommend that you avoid this manga. It does have high ratings but, as far as I can tell, every reviewer says that he's dropping it, so I don't understand why they're giving high ratings to a series that they can't stand to finish.

Okay I will admit that I really loved this series for many, many, years. It showed such potential. I liked how you figured out a lot of the mysteries as the series progressed, and the relationship between Conan/Ai in itself kept me reading this. HOWEVER, considering how long it's been dragging on, I can't give it any more than a 7/10. When he was back on the forty-somethingish volume, I thought he would finish it by volume 50. He's on volume 67 right now, and there's still no end in sight. I mean, there's a limit to how long, unrealistic, and repetitive a manga can be. Sometimes I think that the mangaka is just trying to keep his income flowing from this story's popularity.... wake me up when its finished... sad

OMG, when this series will end??
This series brings analytical mind n logical thinking to solve cases. Of course, aoyama gosho is great, he can make great detective story with lot of tricks. But somehow, there are too many unrealistic things in the manga. If so.... I'd better read Doraemon because Nobita and Conan have similarity. Nobita always on 4th grade n Conan always on 1st grade.
How many cases Conan have solved as the season changed.. From summer to summer again... then summer again.... then.... just count any summer or winter in the manga, and he still in 1st grade (Unrealistic 1). Also He made himself the detective who can solve more than hundred cases, with no flaw at all (Unrealistic 2)
And there are a looot of murder case for Conan, almost 95% of the cases told someone has been murdered. no other variation of crimes. After 40 volumes above, i feel the case repetitive. Why does everytime he go there always someone being murdered? Is he cursed? (Unrealistic 3)
And.... How stupid Kagoro is? In reality he could be real idiot or already brain washed for not noticing so many case that he solved but not realizing. You don't have to be detective to realize that something strange happen with our memory n body (Unrealistic 4).
I think the mangaka put the detective title for kagoro, just for smoothing Conan's work through the series.

This series also has plot, at the beginning at the series. So they shouldn't lost focus. If the mangaka likes cases, from the first start it was a mistake to make a plot for the main char. Just make it like Mushishi, Kino no Tabi, Jigoku no Shoujo, Yugo - The Negotiator (this one is very good) ,etc.. those series stressed more about the story of each case, not to the story of main character.
I love plot, and I think the main idea of each manga is important. So i don't really like if the main plot got scatter for too long long time. I have waiting for more than 10 years and that's enough... So I just want to know how Conan will end up the organization and back in his old body (Shinichi Kudo).
I think this series has a bit far from the track...

Long, Repetitive... But I love it!
Rating: 9.0 / 10.0

At first, I was sceptical. A teenager turned into a little boy and solving murder cases. Really? Knowing little, my thoughts were all about "How the heck could he even get into crime scenes?" and other things along those lines, and it really didn't help that my first encounter with this series was the Anime Dub.

So, one day, bored me decided, "What the heck" and clicked couragously on chapter one.

Let me start with what I didn't like before saying what was good.

Firstly: Right from the start it feels like the cases are moving too fast. Shinichi solves the case within a couple hours, some of them less. And after he reveals everything he's figured out he pulls out one peice of evidence, or explains one place that the culprit's figureprints are, and BAM! They confess everything.

Is one figureprint or one peice of evidence really enough for them to be convicted? Well, that's why they confess, right? Because they're sure that they're going to be convicted?

The only explaination is that they break under Koguro's glare-of-doomTM. Though it could be because the burden of killing somebody is too much to bare.

I don't think there are enough crazies. The people who kill without motives. I don't think there are any. There's, like, no real serial killers or anything. There should be more of those.

You also never see Conan/Shinichi make a mistake. You see Heiji fall for tricks and make mistakes, and Heiji is almost a carbon copy of Shinichi's thinking patterns. The two could like, communicate without talking if they tried. And when solving cases together, they sort of do.

Shinichi is only human. he should have made (and announced) a wrong deduction at one point or another.

Long. Many of the mysteries are the same thing over and over. After they discovered their 200th CLOSED-ROOM-MURDER!(c) it should have been less of shock... and when they get cut off from the world and are getting killed off one-by-one Ran and Sonoko should be really calm about it by now. Like: "Oh? Again?"

In the begining there was some plot progress and some diffrent and interesting cases. Then the boring and repetitive cases begin. In these chapters or so there is very little plot progress. Somewhere in there you've got some new characters that will probably be essential to the ending, but just when it seems he's finally caught on the leads on the Black Organisation that have been surounding him for fifty chapters something happens and they all disapear.

After a bit, there was something that looked like plot progress, and there's variety in the later chapters again.

The characters and drawing style:
The characters are great (though Shinichi needs to make more mistakes). The drawings are nice to look at. I've seen worse.

The plot: It's slow moving, but it's there. Relationships between characters seem to be at a standstill, but are very slowly moving forward.

Speaking of time: Why the heck is Conan still in first grade? I know manga world moves slower than real time, but I've seen some dates that indicate Shinichi has been a kid for like, at lease two years. (there was a Valetine's day thing about 100 chapters ago, and next thing I know I'm seeing the date Feb. 3rd across my screen. Ummm...

The mysteries are good. Predictable, some of them are. Some though, the diffrent ones, are something to look forward to, and between all the annoying murders and such, there is usually some kind of interesting thing going on.

I also like how Megure began to notice that dead bodies follows Koguro around, and that he should lock himself in his house (though it's more like they follow Shinichi...) and how people don't just write off his "Sleeping Deduction Shows". It's become his trademark thing, and he has fans that want to see him solving cases, but it's just not writen off.

Character development feels non-existant, but after going back and reading, you can see so plainly how far the characters have gotten from where they began.

All in all though, this a very enjoyable series if you're looking for something diffrent: I highly reccomend it.

My Super Top Notch Manga EVER~!

This manga is absolutely my super top notch one since I always crazy about mistery and all detective stuff.
I'd been reading this manga since about 9 years old (i'm 22 now) and never get tired of it. But sadly i couldn't solve the cases myself. Well, I think my logic isn't strong enough >_<
For this 'Masterpiece' rating 10 is still too low, isn't it?!

Aoyama Gosho sensei, Good Job! Banzai! ^o^

Unrealistically dramatic - it seems as if Conan attracts a lot of murders each time he, Ran and her father goes somewhere. Is it even normal that a seventeen-year-old could possible witness more corpse than someone twice, or triple his age?

To my knowledge, this will probably an on-going manga for as long as I can count, and me being me, I do not like anything long with no character development at all, whatsoever.

And yet I love this manga. Quite possibly THE best manga I've ever read.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll continue reading the manga.

Thing is, sometimes I notice the suspicious acts of the suspects, but I can never deduct the tricks and the hows. Nevertheless I enjoy every chapter of this manga, though I wished there were less murders and more "innocent" mysteries, like a theft, or just a puzzle by the prof/teacher. I also admire the mangaka, who kept the same simple but nice artstyle throughout these long years.

This is a nice fun manga that I've really grown to enjoy reading. My only real comment is don't read it all in two weeks, take your time with it. While the stories are all fun, your almost garenteed to get sick of everyone getting murdered left right and center >.>

I've read it since I was young, it was one of my most favourite manga at that time and that's the reason why I generously gave it 9 points although the manga has lost its shiny. The murderers killed for some silly/absurd reasons (sometimes by some insane/unthinkable methods) and the repetitiveness never fail getting me bored lately, except for the mafia part.
