Description
From Mangascreener:

Suzuki is a troubled boy. He's lived with uncaring foster parents for most of his life, alienated from the other kids at his school, owner of a cynical, unhappy mentality. Komatsuzaki is a violent, unpredictable bully whose head trauma causes him to act in mysterious, inexplicable ways. Arakawa is a no-nonsense, normal girl who pines after Komatsuzaki but can never have him. A teacher with just one working eye. A mother who committed suicide. A daughter in an endless coma. Attempted rapes, murders, extortion, sexual deviance, and a freakish explosion in the butterfly population. All of these elements are whirled together in a story spanning 10 years, a tale of blackness, pain, and apocalypse. And maybe just a bit of hope and redemption. It's a spiritual cross between the misanthropic suburban malevolence of Kyoko Okazaki's Rivers Edge and the eerie mysticality of Donnie Darko.
-------------------

From Fantagraphics:

A DECADE-SPANNING JOURNEY INTO DARKNESS

Even as butterflies ominously proliferate in town, the rumor of a mysterious creature lurking in the tunnel behind the school spreads among the children. When the body of Arié Kimura's mother is found by this tunnel's entrance, next to apparently human traces, the legend seems to be confirmed. Is the end of the world coming? In order to appease the wrath of the beast, the children decide to offer it a sacrifice: The unfortunate Arié, whom they believe to be the cause of the curse, is shoved into a well that leads to the Nijigahara tunnel an act that in turns pushes Komatsuzaki, the budding thug who has carried a torch for Arié for a while already, entirely over the edge.

But this is only the beginning of the complex, challenging, obliquely told Nijigahara Holograph, which takes place in two separate timelines and involves the suicidal Suzuki; Higure, his stalkerish would-be girlfriend; and their teacher Miss Sakaki, whose heavily bandaged face remains a mystery; and many more brothers, sisters, parents, co-workers, teachers, aggressors and victims who are all inextricably linked to one another and all will eventually ten years later have to live with what they've done or suffered through.

This manga demands a lot of work from the reader, but pays it back in full. It's the first time I've ever gone straight back to the beginning after reading a manga and read it through again, and without stopping at that ... quite a trip. Most impressive is the author/artist's exploitation of visual/conversational detail to build up crucial plot elements almost in passing, which gives the whole story a breathtaking economy. But it's a good story as well, in my opinion.

Have to disagree with all three of Laclongquan's points: I don't think the Zhuangzi story encapsulates the "main idea" of this manga at all; would sooner see the "main idea" in the comments of the gentleman on page 291 ... I find that the story as a whole resolves to become something decisively more than a depressing read; and to call the characters weak is an ineffective broadside --- the characters much more closely resemble the cast of a Faulkner novel than any of your typical helpless manga caricatures.

Highly recommended.

(and to bukuwawa ... thanks and hats off for a tremendous job.)

It's not a happy story, yeah, but it's also one of the most complex and compelling things I've ever read. I'm sorry you didn't like it.

Full disclosure, I was one of the people who worked on the scanlation, so I'm clearly biased.

EDIT: People should check out monkey-boy's awesome plot thread on the nijigahara board here at mangaupdates. Only read it after you've worked out as much about the manga as you can!

God, this kind of manga is so frustrating.

The main idea, the expression, is affluented by Zangzu "Am I a human dreaming of being a butterfly or am I a butterfly dreaming of being a human"

That said, the main feeling of this manga is very depressing. The characters are haunted by memories of the past, never look forward to future and just barely glance at the present. Death and Betrayal are everywhere.

The main reason I hate it is those characters. So weak! Maybe that makes them human. But I dont have to like it.

Damn it! Delete it from comp as fast as I can.

how to top that comment... I won't for now, cause I read it only once. To think that I'm actually a little afraid of reading it again... I feel its potential. So damned beautiful...

One of the best things I have read in my life. I just finished reading it for the second time and I'm completely in awe, chills still running down my spine reminiscing.
The first read is more like an introduction to get a feel for the story and meet the characters, but it's only after that you get to read what it's really about. So incredibly satisfying to piece it all together, and even after reading it twice I feel obligated to go over it again cause there's so much you can get out of it.

300 pages... NO, scratch that. You have to read it at least 3 times. Making this book 900 pages of pure fulfillment.
A true masterpiece that transcends manga as a medium, and I feel bad for everyone that won't pick up on this.
