Just finished reading, i was truly thrilled by this manga. And moved... Althought i don't like basketball, it doesn't matter with this manga. The spirits of the characters made me love this manga, and appreciate the context (bball)
It's also very funny! That Hanamichi is a real funny baldy haha :) This work is better than Vagabond, because you feel the mangaka really likes basketball :)
Blast from the Past!
Oh man i am writing this review 10 years after i first read it, so my memory might be a bit scewed but i had to do it better late than Never!
The MC at first might appear to be Annoying and a bit Cute Cocky but believe me the Charm wears ON pretty quick...around 30 chapters in i already fell in love with him ...his quirkiness and the comedic situation that he himself forces into is GOLD!
Side characters are also well developed and they have their own reasons and Background that gets revealed as the series progresses. This is the BEST chemistry i have seen for a Sports manga...
One of the most standout arcs is towards the final and that is what pretty much defines this manga for me...i won't spoil the final match details but lets just say that it is the most Intense and exhilarating thing you will ever read ! Guaranteed !!!
Realistic, informative, hilarious, and INTENSE!
I put off reading this manga for a long time because the cover art looks sweaty and unattractive (it's actually not so). Now that I've read the whole thing, I just want to read more!
This manga is fun, with a strange main character that might anger readers or cause 2nd-hand embarrassment at times. There are many jokes, puns, and slapstick humor weaved evenly throughout every chapter without disrupting the flow of the manga. I actually wanted to cry at many points.
Long story short, I unexpectedly came to love this manga. Slam Dunk is the BEST of the basketball genre--better than Kuroko no Basket and etc in many aspects. Anyways, kudos to the author! Because of Slam Dunk, I became interested in other basketball manga ( and basketball in general ) as well!

Ok, so it's been...what, 7 years since I read it. Yet I still remember it as the best sports manga I've read (granted, I haven't read a whole lot) as well as one of the most hilarious manga I've ever read. I remember trying to watch Dear Boys soon after reading this and I just couldn't, it was just so shit by comparison. Great amount of drama, hot-bloodedness, comedy, sports and I love that ending. Really, really hope those talks of a sequel after the mangaka is done with Real are true.
Well i watched the anime and manga, and at the end of both i got a little upset , because there still things not ended yet, like what is gonna be sakuragi future as player, he was improving so well , i think a sequel should be made, cause it is a great manga but the ending is not that proper, i like the new manga that the autor made , but still would be nice Slam Dunk having a sequel.
Fantastic in every way.
Art is top notch. Characters that are believable, likeable and can understand and get behind. Very funny. Good character-driven story. Tense and exciting confrontations in the basketball court. Perhaps I'm a tad let down by the ending, but not that much. If you like sports manga, funny manga or simply manga in general - read this. Inoue Takehiko is one of the best current mangakas.
For me this is simply why I read manga and what makes them so much better than american or any other comics . This is the 'Friends' version of manga haven't met one guy who has not loved it . Like all fans I hope for the day when Inoue san picks up the story again .

just a 10
Other than 10, which number could I have shot? The best mangas never give a sequel, or say the cleverest mangaka always can give a perfect ending; so is the situation of YuYu Hakusho

I am not a fan of basketball infact i never thought of playing it. But now not only i like to play it i like to play it seriously too. This manga is just awesome. Not a single dull moment in 31 volumes. You wont even feel how quickly you will complete reading it its so engaging. Those who have given it less than 8.5 rating seriously guys i cant understand you. Everything about slam dunk is awesome, its drawing are expressive, its hell lot of hilarious, it has really good pace.
