This is one of the best short mangas ive ever read. Deep story with mysterious sad and dark backgrounds. The characters are interesting but also a little bit creazy which makes them unique and individual. The whole mood of this book is just to great. And it leaves plenty of space for interpreation.

This manga demands a lot of work from the reader, but pays it back in full. It's the first time I've ever gone straight back to the beginning after reading a manga and read it through again, and without stopping at that ... quite a trip. Most impressive is the author/artist's exploitation of visual/conversational detail to build up crucial plot elements almost in passing, which gives the whole story a breathtaking economy. But it's a good story as well, in my opinion.

Have to disagree with all three of Laclongquan's points: I don't think the Zhuangzi story encapsulates the "main idea" of this manga at all; would sooner see the "main idea" in the comments of the gentleman on page 291 ... I find that the story as a whole resolves to become something decisively more than a depressing read; and to call the characters weak is an ineffective broadside --- the characters much more closely resemble the cast of a Faulkner novel than any of your typical helpless manga caricatures.

Highly recommended.

(and to bukuwawa ... thanks and hats off for a tremendous job.)

It's not a happy story, yeah, but it's also one of the most complex and compelling things I've ever read. I'm sorry you didn't like it.

Full disclosure, I was one of the people who worked on the scanlation, so I'm clearly biased.

EDIT: People should check out monkey-boy's awesome plot thread on the nijigahara board here at mangaupdates. Only read it after you've worked out as much about the manga as you can!

Beautiful? There's just no accounting for taste

God, this kind of manga is so frustrating.

The main idea, the expression, is affluented by Zangzu "Am I a human dreaming of being a butterfly or am I a butterfly dreaming of being a human"

That said, the main feeling of this manga is very depressing. The characters are haunted by memories of the past, never look forward to future and just barely glance at the present. Death and Betrayal are everywhere.

The main reason I hate it is those characters. So weak! Maybe that makes them human. But I dont have to like it.

Damn it! Delete it from comp as fast as I can.

how to top that comment... I won't for now, cause I read it only once. To think that I'm actually a little afraid of reading it again... I feel its potential. So damned beautiful...

One of the best things I have read in my life. I just finished reading it for the second time and I'm completely in awe, chills still running down my spine reminiscing.
The first read is more like an introduction to get a feel for the story and meet the characters, but it's only after that you get to read what it's really about. So incredibly satisfying to piece it all together, and even after reading it twice I feel obligated to go over it again cause there's so much you can get out of it.

300 pages... NO, scratch that. You have to read it at least 3 times. Making this book 900 pages of pure fulfillment.
A true masterpiece that transcends manga as a medium, and I feel bad for everyone that won't pick up on this.
