From the same person responsible for 20th Century Boys, Yawara, and Monster. Similar to Yawara, but Happy is a sport oriented manga focusing on womens tennis rather than womens judo. Basic story in Happy is that a father becomes loaded down with debt and decides to skip town, leaving behind his daughter Miyuki and younger children to deal with the bill collectors and family living expenses. Miyuki suddenly finds that she needs to work and earn money fast, so she turns to her skill as a tennis player. But to reach her goal she will need to face an assortment of problems, misunderstandings, and shady characters who want to stand in her way or take advantage of her.
Interesting story, characters have some depth to them, and the art is good if a bit dated (1990's). 23 volumes total, 7 volumes have been scanlated, and progress on releasing new chapters could be described as very slow.

Just like his other series, Urusawa-sensei is able to make manga that makes you feel like you are one of the characters. The most hated character is the antagonist, who is loved by everyone. The protagonist is likable, but made out to be the evil-badguy because of the antagonist. The idea is much like 20th Century Boys and Monster.
Umino is the protagonist who, although is very kind and likable, is hated by many characters in the series. Kenji (20th Century Boys) was also like that. It was a very interesting series to read, because it got me so worked up, yet I wanted to read more. Because I want Umino to succeed a lot. Go Umino!
The art is great, the story is great, the characters are all great, and the general impression is great. 10--no, 20 times better than Prince of Tennis. The only thing that pisses me off is that I'm still waiting for scanlations of volume 10 and up.

Umino Miyuki's just not charismatic enough and yes, her family's infuriating, but if you're reading Happy! you're there for the supporting cast, all of whom I love to *pieces*; the more two-faced and conniving they are the better. And the yakuza with the secret emo pain--! Be still my heart!
And there's something to be said for watching such a boring protagonist's life just get worse and *worse*, until - fingers crossed - she has no choice but to become interesting.

reading this manga makes me wanna kill somebody like Umino Miyuki, coz she sees this damn world with such a baby eyes, and i can't stand that everybody is pushing her so bad. I think, someone like her is better off dead, and straight go to heaven. But then, my murder intent turn into deep sadness, coz, Urasawa really portrays every bad side of human being. Someone nice and friendly is actually have a mean and devilish heart. And of course, in a world like that, a baby umino miyuki surely hard to breathe.
