Baby steps is really one of the best series i have read... its awesome.... best in every aspect... realistic, optimistic, motivating, and many more. I am a big fan of the writer. Wish that she completes the series as soon as possible. And so does the anime production. Eagerly waiting for the season 3... I can say that baby steps is a complete series. It doesnt lacks any thing so far. Well the climax matters a lot in every way.. so we will wait for that. But its the best series so far. I am pretty much confident that the writer wont disappoint any fan as always and continue to make us happy. I am rooting for u buddy. Keep up the work. Complete it in the best way possible and make many more. Arigato.. make us happy...

Really good man....and I'm a hard view shoujo fan....because if this I finally realised how senseless all that stuff was and I kinda stopped reading mangas altogether (ok mostly is cuz I ran out). One negative is that It's good but too short, it didn't fill like how many volumes it said it has ...right now in just waiting for this along with my other 'unfinished' mangas .

Just like the poster "Lippe-Kun" before me said, the main character is unique and the story is a bit slow paced but looks good so far. Also I hope the romance part comes into play soon. I recommend this manga for people who like a different feeling sports manga with a dash of romance in it. That's it for now. Its too early to rate it but I will start off by giving it full marks. Oh I would like to thank "Hyuugalegacy" for picking up this manga and doing a good job of scanlating this. I hope he keeps up the good work

It just gives me the feeling of... fresh. The main character acts like an old man, so it's like the opposite of some titles such as Naruto (where the protagonist is an idiot), and the way the story develops so far (only 2 chapters) is quite slow, the romance too. And the new thing is that the main character doesn't is a "genius" or doesn't state that he is gonna be the best player of all times or something like that (again I only read 2 chapters so far). That's it, for the moment.

his is a very well done manga. The characters each have a unique personality. The subject of tennis is done very well. But the one thing that I would have wanted to see more progress in, after 56 chapters, is a good love interest. No progress there at all! So I'm dropping it for now. Maybe I'll give a look-see after it hits 120 chapters.

I really want to read this manga, but at the rate the releases come out I'd have to wait three more years just to get to volume 14. I might consider it if a chapter came out each week or even every 2 weeks, but right now I just don't know.

Good for being a sport manga

It's about tennis. It really is about tennis; not some supersonic tecniques used during tennis matches, just tennis (with few exceptions). That makes it the more enjoyable, even though it gets kind of boring after a while, but that's because it tries to stay as close to reality as a sport manga can, and I appreciate it. The characters are a little bidimensional, to be honest, but it's not that important to the story.

Characters are so so so off

I just read the first chapter and I have to say, wow, the characters in the manga are giving off such a bad vibe. So the main character works hard at something and the girl calls him weird?! How about her working hard to become a tennis pro, are you weird too? And how come people keeps saying he's weird, one person even says he gives her the creeps! That pisses me off to no end.

Also, the manga keeps saying he thinks like an older person (I guess precocious is the right word to describe him), with that way of thinking, he shouldn't be such a pushover, especially if it's being done by a girl the same age that he barely knows and has just recently met. Telling him that he should do the stuff he enjoys and all that. You just met him and barely know him, why do you say that kind of stuff! Such a busybody know-it-all. With the way he is, he should be more confident in the things he's doing and thinking, and shouldn't be so easily swayed by words from a person that barely knows him.

He clearly has a defined goal for the future and works really hard for it. With the effort he has put in it, he should be feeling more strongly for that goal, but he doesn't! And is easily hesitant and so unsure and wishy-washy about his goals and future. Arrggh! It doesn't make sense! There's one line that clinches this for me, "Does Takasaki-san go through that on a daily basis?" OMG, you work just as hard or harder than her everyday too! Why are you thinking these stupid thoughts and comparing her to yourself and her dreams to your dreams? Why does it sound like he puts in no effort to anything!? Arghhh.

Lastly, the main character is so off for some reason, it's like he's not really thinking like a guy, especially with his background of thinking for the future, being precocious and doing great in school. With all of that, he should have a bigger head and have more ego and pride, but he doesn't?! Why? Speaking from a guy's perspective, I don't get him at all.

PS. He definitely has no "guts" and definitely didn't get an A in PE. You have no stamina, so you run away. That's it. That's the way you should do it. *smacks him on the face*

PPS. His motivation for getting into tennis sucks and is one of the weakest points in the plot.

Ei-chan. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The mangaka absolutely and undeniably failed when he created the main character. Within every chapter, his image and personality grind away at my mind to the point where I wonder why I even read this series.

Main Character: Maruo Eiitirou

Looks
  • Unique, in other words he has a fugly hairstyle that makes his face look like a fish.
  • Baby face and oversized eyes which only add to the problem. They also destroy any possible hope of masculinity in the main character though that's another issue entirely.
  • Weak physique that contradicts him ever being competitive in the sport of tennis. I also don't see how the mangaka expects the readers to believe that his endurance can keep up with the perseverance aspect.

Personality
  • Meticulously annoying. He carries the same style of data tennis as Inui from PoT while having none of his redeeming qualities.
  • Weak. Like his physique, he has a meek personality.
  • Rather than gather data before the match, crunching the numbers, and then forming a strategy, "Ei-chan" does it all in the very game he's playing.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
One of Ei's opponents uses tennis to recreate paintings on the court... Yeah... Skipping over that issue, Ei records each of his opponent's seemingly random shots, somehow comes to the realization that they form paintings, and then forms a winning strategy all during one match.

Biased or not, I have come to despise this potentially good manga because of a single character. Unfortunately, this character can't be killed off or pushed to the sidelines which he rightfully deserves. Test this manga though it's not one I'll recommend to friends.
