A Journey
by boo-bop

I had always seen this webtoon on various sites recommending it so highly, but it was still ongoing and looked too long. I will say that I’m glad that I waited until it was completed, because binge reading this from the beginning to the (beautiful) end was a journey.

This is labeled as “psychological” for a reason, so if you’re looking for a perfect male lead, then this isn’t it. Jung is an enigma throughout the majority of the story. We don’t know his intentions and we know he has a dark manipulative side. Despite this, you can’t really hate him. You see his genius as well as his sociopathic tendencies.

The story itself is always thrilling and entertaining. It is told during two timelines, the past and the present. The pacing is incredible that when these two timelines meet up- it’s perfect. It never felt too long- every piece in the puzzle was necessary. We see seol change as a person and we see jung change.

And the CHARACTERS. Oof don’t get me started on the characters. The development of each one is phenomenal. You truly cared about them. Not only do we get to see the romance between seol and jung, but we get side character relationships as well. You root for their happiness. Ugh this isn’t as well written as I would like it to be, but this story really left me feel emotionally numb. And I miss all the characters. I will definitely reread this one again.

*update* literally reread it from start to finish after writing this review- and I recommend everyone does that. Knowing the whole story it’s like you go in with a new perspective, and you notice the smaller details. Also really gives you time to think about the characters and what drives them to do what they do. If I could erase this from my brain so that I could read it again for the first time, I would. Yes it was that good.

realism!

if there is a realistic comic story about themes involved out there, it's this one! Hong is just the girl I totally identify with in all aspects of life. especially the scenes of her reaction towards the lazy colleagues, boyfriend moments and stolen identity resolution when it comes to MinSoo, plus the misunderstanding and lack of interest on the side of Jung whenever she tries to share her problem with him about it.
This damn webtoon is accurate in its realism and I respect it for it : )

I love the the characters! You have the main character who is kind and likeable, but not stupid or a constant damsel in distress. And the rest of the characters are surrounded by an ambiguity that keeps you guessing. Don't know what's going to happen, but i'll love to find out.

Boring at first but plot thickens and I'm hooked

It took me quite awhile to pick this up. I tried to read this several times but always dropped before I passed more than 2-3 chapters. I forced myself to read it because so many people recommend it and the rating is really high. Boy... this is probably one of the most interesting and complex manhwa that I've ever read. It's not that the story is completely original and talked about big bang theory but rather, it's a simple, very well done story with great, well-rounded characters. Most of the stories are told through Sul's point of view so it's hard to figure out what's the intention behind other people's actions and it made it more interesting. Keep reading if you think it's boring at first and promise, you'll never regret it!!

Cannot get enough!!

The art is simple, but yet really beautiful. It's all color, so obviously a lot of work has gone into making it. The coloring may be inconsistent at times, but who's really looking hard at the difference from one frame to another, right? The work that's put into it is amazing. The lines are clean. Very good on the eyes. To be honest, after reading quite a lot of manhwa, I have developed this stereotype of "manhwa art" --some of you might know what I'm talking about; a lot of manhwa has this specific type of art that's very angle-ly and a lot of emphasis on length. Even though this is a manhwa, the art is different from most manhwa I have read so far. It's sooooo much better!!

The whole romance thing is really interesting!! The heroine is super lovable. She is all that I love in a character. It's funny as hell, too. Haha!! The awkward silences are so well timed. It's perfect. I'm reading it right now as I typed this out. I cannot get enough of it so I end up reading all that's available in one go.
The romance is the center of the plot. At first, I did not see how the romance can ever develop between the two. The beginning part was more about the mystery of the guy. The heroine is not interested (in denial or otherwise) in the guy until ..hmmm.. way later on. But even though the actual romance develops slowly, there's so much of other stuff to keep you occupy. The romance is realistic; not the whole love-at-first-sight in shojo manga. The characters are deep; they have their own lives. The heroine is incredibly perceptive and sensitive, so she observes others very well. As a result, first person point of view is a breeze since seeing the world through the perceptive heroine's eyes showed us a lot of what's going on in the story. (It's not all 1st pov, of course (that would be too limiting)).

Updated: I just finished reading the latest chapter of the "2nd season," chapter 60--and I'm currently in love with this male protagonist. Technically, there seems to be 2 male leads now. It might turn into a love triangle later (spoiler, but not really). The male protagonist is so deep. Mysterious, a bit twisted and dark, but oh so interesting!! He's not one dimensional, that's for sure. I don't know what he's thinking and I don't know this type, so I can't predict what he's gonna do at all!! This makes for a very exciting romantic drama.

I really recommend this manhwa for people who want to get out of the typical shojoesque (sorry, using japanese term here) manga.

It moves too slowly for me

It's well written but it moves too slowly for me but apparently I'm in a minority in that. I find the main female's lack of willingness to be straight forward with people in general irritating, too. For instance, why can't she just tell a guy, "I'm sorry but I can't give her phone number to you. It's not my phone number to be giving out so you're gonna have to get it on your own. If you really like her then make her like you enough to want to give it to you. End of discussion." I don't understand people/characters who are interested in a 'peaceful life'. There's no such thing to be attained. There is no such thing as a life without confrontation. Trying to avoid confrontations, which are an inevitable part of life, only assures a bigger one in the end and will only serve to make your life stressful every single day.

Looking back this all of this was just about a sociopath falling in love with a hella sensitive girl but this probably is and will be the best story I’ll ever read. I don’t think I will find something like this ever again… I’m a bit sad.
Also the ending was impeccable.

I just finished Cheese in the Trap. Oh man its so beautiful. Everything just ties together so incredibly well. Genuinely its a long series. Yet i wish it was longer. It did too many things right and the things that were wrong were just minor issues in comparison to the overall quality of the webtoon. The only issue i have is that constant backstory of there first year as the story starts in the second year. The webtoon i feel like should've started in first year but overall its a minor issue to the quality of this webtoon. The manipulation, Psychology romance was all done so incredibly well. My only genuine gripe with this series is how the sister kinda got off scott free especially considering how horrible her personality was.

Addicting

This is the first webtoon that I've read. At first I found it very hard to follow, with the switching between past and present so often, and I had a hard time remembering who was who, since the cast, which is fairly large, was introduced all at once, and those korean names are hard to remember ^^;!

Although skeptical at first, I was quickly absorbed into the story within like.. five chapters? And before I knew it I was reading like mad.. I swear I couldn't stop reading even though it was 5AM..

Personally, I love this manga because of the characters. They are all so realistic and unique with their own distinct traits! I also like how they aren't perfect, heck they're all weird and a bit psychotic.. especially *cough Jung. My favorites are Sul, Inho, and Eun Taek. 100 chapters and Sul still hasn't disappointed me. Sure her paranoia is a bit frustrating, but I could absolutely relate since I'm also one who over-analyses things. Also, she's hard-working, strong, shy, yet independent! Some folks said the romance was too slow, but honestly I didn't feel that it was too slow.. after all, this is a josei, slice-of-life manga. And it's a great one too. Should definitely check this one out!
