This one wasn't good. Original was better.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
I was terribly upset when they brought in the ORIGINAL characters of the better version of the 'universe of the four gods' incident that happened in the 20's. (Manga before this one) They got the guy wrong and the girl wrong. The guy did not control plants, he can change his gender and control wind. The girl didn't look anything like the original. But that was only a small part of this story. I didn't like how in the anime whenever they had a uhh...'intimite' moment they played this cheesy saxaphone or w/e hahaha But now to the STORY. I didn't like Miaka OR her friend (forget her name), both terribly stupid and annoying. I didn't like how they kept hurting the emperors feelings, I didn't like how the gay guy started turning straight as the story progressed, creating another pointless love triangle...for a short time. : P You don't even remember half of the characters, in my opinion that is usually not a good thing. This was a very immature story, I wanted to pick up miaka and throw her into a river with a rock tied to her foot. The ORIGINAL story: Fushigi Yuugi Priestess of GENBU, was AMAZING. The girl was strong and dependable and SMART, the warriors had their own personalities and stories that was interesting, not dull. and the GUY was smart, cunning, and mysterious. as well as incredibly handsome, not godly like but a more realistic as a manga can get. I really loved it so much, I hate this one. I guess if you're a big fan of sailor moon, this thing is ok, but I seriously recommend the genbu version. That one was the best.
*bangs head* Ugh...
Oh my god, Miaka is so annoying!!!! I'm pretty sure everyone else agrees since all of the other comments say the same thing, which Miaka really, really needs to grow a backbone. It's sorta pathetic that during the whole series, she does not develop at all in terms of strength of character. She's supposed to be a priestess, meaning she needs to actually do something. I mean, even Kagome is better. She at least fights and can kill stuff. And she doesn't get seduced every other chapter...
i'v only liked 2 watase's works Fushigi yugi : MP and Ayashi no ceres but LOVED everything else besides sakura gari (yaoi T.T)
i hate miaka shes so optimistic and furthur more "Tamahome oh tamahome!!" i prefer Genbu kaiden my fav. all time for my whole manga!! takiko is P.E.R.F.E.C.T!! so is rimudo!! if u liked Fushigi yugi then read fushigi yugi : genbu kaiden u'll DIE for sure !!! its great
I pretty much agree with everyone about Miaka, I can't even stand talking/typing about her!! I agree with zettaikareshii14 about everything!! so yeah, unless you can stand 18 volumes of pure torture from a useless girl, go ahead and read it. The prequel on the other hand is awesome! Takiko is a waaaaaaaaaaay better heroine than that Miaka!! Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden -->thumbs up! Fushigi Yuugi-->thumbs down!

never managed to finish it
Damn, this is one shojo manga that really gets on my nerve. Stupid , whiny, ugly heroine, and the fact that lots of guys fall for her makes me wonder 'are they out of their freaking mind?' .I tried to finish it lots of times, thinking 'it's gonna get better, it's so famous after all', but couldn't. To me, all it is is a cheesy soap opera; with me wanting to kill off whatever-her-name-is and the main guy with every page turned so I finally gave up after my 5th try or something >.<
Seriously, the only reason why I read the first volume was because I finished the anime. The characters are super hilairious and have awesome personalities (except for a certain main character >_>;. It's 18 volumes, which I think is a waste. If you want it short and simple, watch the anime. (The OVA's are pretty much worth watching the 52 episodes). But if you're not an anime fan, read the genbu series. It still has Yuu Watase's creative characters and plot without the annoying main character this one has >_>.
