From VIZ:
Winning isn't everything in the game of basketball, but who wants to come in second? It takes dedication and discipline to be the best, and the Shohoku High hoops team wants to be just that. They have one last year to make their captain's dream of reaching the finals come true--will they do it? Takehiko Inoue's legendary beloved basketball manga is finally here and the tale of a lifetime is in your hands.
Hanamichi Sakuragi's got no game with girls—none at all! It doesn't help that he's known for throwing down at a moment's notice and always coming out on top. A hopeless bruiser, he's been rejected by 50 girls in a row! All that changes when he meets the girl of his dreams, Haruko, and she's actually not afraid of him! When she introduces him to the game of basketball, his life is changed forever...
Note: Includes a oneshot called 10 Days After.
In 1995 Slam Dunk received the 40th Shogakukan Manga Award for shounen.
I just luv this manga!! i've read it like more than ten times already and I'm still getting excited over the awesomeness of the main characters plays, sure he is cocky, but his cockiness is truly hilarious!! however, it can't be argued that the guy is somewhat a genius!! and in the end.. you just can't end up hating the guy..
I also like the realism of this manga and how Inoue potrays basketball (it's completely different from my expectations and now I became more open minded about basketball).. I won't spoil it anymore.. but for people out there who haven't read it, read it!! if not, you're missing a lot!! even though you dunno basketball you can still enjoy this manga.. and who knows you might end up liking and playing basketball.. I know a couple of my friends did just that cus of Slam Dunk
This was one of the original series that got me into manga/anime back when the first few episodes of the anime version came out, and I have to say it still holds the spot as one of the best sports/comedy mangas even now. Sure the ending is a bit unexpected but it does leave a bittersweet taste and leaves things to be looked forward to.
First I was really sceptical about this manga, and the first volume wasn't that great. But it became better and better and after finishing it I can say this is the best sports manga out there. I can´t find words to describe how great it is, it's simply an amazing piece of art. It would've been great if there had been another 30 volumes.I don`t rate very much with a ten but this one is better than that, ah I love it. If you like sports manga you will love this one but if you like basketball you will worship it.
[edit by mod, Warning: Possible spoiler] omg... at the end it made me cry T_T thought he died T_T;; (not really spoiler my bad) btw.. in the beginning the art was crap... by the end it's SOoo GOOD! and improved further in vagebound XD
When i first read it i was a bit skeptical, and the artwork to me needed some time to get used to but man, it has a great ending (although i wish there was a part II for it), this is without a doubt an amazing sports manga, and it teaches you a lot of the rules for basketball, makes me want to play =D
Mmmm wayywayy better than the anime.. a must read to guys learning to play bball.. *thumbs up* i liked the ending.. i wish he should have made more.. like a part 2 or something hahaha ------------------------------
Just finished reading, i was truly thrilled by this manga. And moved... Althought i don't like basketball, it doesn't matter with this manga. The spirits of the characters made me love this manga, and appreciate the context (bball)
It's also very funny! That Hanamichi is a real funny baldy haha :) This work is better than Vagabond, because you feel the mangaka really likes basketball :)
