I just don't know what to think, all this hype about johan being such a 'monster' yet I never saw him live up to that, I wanted more explanation towards the end because I just didn't get it ?? ! Nina says "I forgive u" but for what I just don't get why she says that. I didn't feel weird in anyway when I was reading this but others are saying they did and towards the end I just really wanted to finish up.
One thing I must say is the author really put a lot of thought into this and its a good build up but for me maybe its because of how old I am ?? or something but I'd much rather watch tennis manga. I the only one that feels this way ? Who the hell was the 'true monster' cuz it sure wasn't johan.

Though I've not read other works by Naoki Urasawa, just reading this one lets you see the greatness of his works. This story kicks major ass, it has all the elements of a great story, and it just pulls you into this story so much and it's not hard to understand either. its just...Perfect period.
I think it would be a perfect movie if people know how to do it (though i've heard only bad things about how New Line is gonna screw this one up).
I just love the art, its so...hmm realistic?....heh but yeah this is definitely one of my all time favorite stories. I may in the future go and dwelve into other Urasawa works when i get the time but I think he's truly a master of writing.

I do not know words how to express my feelings (it' s not only because I don't know english) rating it is more... (that's why I sad that I don't know english :)

It is a nice quality series, no doubt about that. Suitable for an older adult audience, with a serious autmosphere, plenty of dialogue, and strives away from the usual themes and style that apply to plenty of other mangas.
However...
I read little more than halfway through, but for whatever reason it didn't entice me enough to continue. A lot of aspects of the plot felt familiar (The "Been done before" kind of sentiment; for example, like the main male handling a gun, getting all gritty, taking things into his own hands. Reminded me too much of a lot of typical action movies from the 80's-90's. And thanks to my dad, watched plenty of them growing up) and the journey of the whole thing eventually felt a bit contrived. I didn't feel that much suspense, or that much shock, it didn't feel creepy. Other then the one or two characters, everyone else felt a bit flat, one dimensional or typical. It just didn't "Wow" me, and I really thought it was going to.
It might be just a personal thing; this manga was just not for me. It is definitely not a bad manga whatsoever, so go for it and have a try.

When I hear or read people who say that Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, or Vampire Knight are the best manga, I just laugh. I laugh because they have not read Monster.
I have both read the manga and watched the word-for-word anime adaptation, and I can tell you that I enjoyed every moment of it.

When I first read the review in Animenfo Top#200 anime section. It was highly rated but it stated that the genre was horror. Since I am a scary cat, I did not dare to see it. Luckily after a few months, my curiosity got the better
I can still feel the shivers in my spine. The power of this series reminds me of Berserk. So far I only rated Berserk 20/10. This is the second. Why? Even though I love Naruto & Kenshin so much, they are only rated 19/10. Others series can't fight bcoz they don't have such feeling like TOTAL fear or TOTALLY helplessness.
Read it and you will understand. Read it at your OWN RISK.

Personally, I'm not that sure why people are so crazy about this manga. I mean, it has an interesting premise...but I feel that the mangaka tried too hard to make it "mysterious" and "deep". The whole story rambles on too long, twists seem to be thrown in willy nilly just to make things more confusing, and many of the supposedly smart characters make stupid / weird decision after decision (a personal pet peeve of mine). The art style didn't really appeal to me at all, as well. I'd give it a 5 / 10
it nothing but great!

The premise of this manga is very interesting, a doctor who risks his prestige to do what he thinks is morally correct.
Sadly, the manga soon follows a completely different direction full of Urasawa's tropes: implausible events and ridiculous plot twist after ridiculous plot twist. It would have been much more interesting if it had followed the initial premise.
