Extremely weird

It might be little unfair to write off something that I've only read a volume or two of and obviously has so much room to expand, but for now, this is going into the On Hold list.
The story (thus far) is where it lost me. The way it jumps back and forth from seemingly unconnected/barely connected characters and their weapons (who have human forms) throws me off and prevents me from getting to know them better, particularly at the beginning of the manga, where the easiest way to get into the story is to be attached to a particular character. The actual material - collecting souls - is interesting and has a lot of potential, though.
The characters, I can say very little about, except that I like Death the Kidd, the little shinigami who's obsessed with symmetry. He's pretty awesome. The Demon Scythe seems cool as well.
Yes, the art is pretty wacky, but it's quite unique, and I like the oddness of it. It's also fairly easy to tell the different characters apart, which is a good thing, considering the chapters jump back and forth between the different soul collectors. For a story that's totally centered around death and killing people to collect their souls, the art's surprisingly clean and lacks gore, which I like. There is WAY too much fanservice, though. There was a page during the first Death the Kidd story where Liz and Patty's clothes were almost completely stripped off. One minute they're battling a mummy, and next minute, you've walked into the middle of a hentai doujinshi.
That's probably the biggest weakness, plus the jumping back and forth between the characters. Soul Eater already seems quite random, with a wacky sense of humour, and combined with the above, reading just one chapter of it gave me a headache. Perhaps I'll come back to this one, perhaps not.

Great Art, Lame Story

If you're looking for cool, if you're looking for art, this is a great one to read. If you're looking for a good story, a deep story, one that is well told, rather then just that just trite and shallow, then this is not the story you're looking for. Basically, it poses, it preens, it walks around like a model on a runway. But while it looks nice, just like the model, theres no real depth here. Worth looking at once at best.
Not sure why

Im almost not sure why i hated this manage so much. It has everything i usualy enjoy in a manga. Decient art, interesting idea, nice fight scens...but yet i still hate it so. Save for Kidd i detest every single character in this managa. Espically the cat demon whos sole purpose is to have oversized boobs. Im not one to put down fan service but it just felt waaaay to forced. Every character has way too extream of a personality...too self absorbed, too shy, too nuts, too easy going, too manwhoreish, the list goes on. There isnt a well balenced character is this manga that anyone can relate too save maybe Soul and his partner. Molenir worded it nicely, it looks nice but theres nothing under the shiney exterior. Awsome idea/art but thats it. I forced myself to read this manga because i couldnt understand why i didnt enjoy it, but it is without a doubt this is the manga i hate the most. I make the guess that the characters ruin this manga for me. If you can overlook them, or heck enjoy them, then youd probally love this manga. Personally i cant stand it and gave it up.
not the best but still good.....I guess

my first thought about the art was...."ick". and although it's really easy to predict what's going to happen, after about two chapters I thought this manga was okay. so i'll also try to watch the anime.
EDIT (10/29/08): after about 8 months of reading this I am seriously embarrased about this comment xD
(mostly because I love SE now)

There's plot under the fluff, but not worth finding.

It's one of those mangas I can't really get excited about, and honestly, don't really like, but read compulsively anyway... Sort of like Inuyasha. At least for this manga there is a layer of good plot somewhere in there... It's just that in this case it's covered in layers of annoying characters.
The assassin who wants to show off, the powerful prince who has OCD and demands that everything be neat and symmetrical, the inconsistent moral system (it's okay to slaughter witches en masse and take their souls, unless of course that witch gets a bit of page-time, in which case they deserve infinite mercy), and the generally excessively lighthearted attitude all annoy me a bit, and yet, I find myself drawn in...

What in the world is with all these 10 reviews? I don't understand how someone can say this is the perfect manga with zero room for improvement and that it can do no wrong. Seems to be a fad lately with many reviewers, even worse than before.
Anyways, as Molenir said, there isn't much to this series. I have tried following it, and tried reading it several times because people keep recommending it to me, but now I am starting to resent those friends who tell me to check it out. This series had a lot to work for, it had an interesting concept, characters that had boundless opportunities and unique qualities.. and then it shoved all that aside, picked up the latest Naruto and Bleach, and decided to copy as best they could. Completely halting any chance this series seemed to have had for a future.

There's no glue holding it together. It's just a battle manga. I almost reached the end of volume 1 before just giving up out of sheer boredom, in the middle of a battle no less.
The art style kinda sucks in that it's all over the place. And I don't see where this "polish" is that others commented about.
Heck, even the ecchi portions weren't very interesting.
So for being mediocre, I gave it a mediocre rating. Enjoy.
