A true classic

For me, this series holds a lot of memories, and a first for me where I've tried to make a short twenty-ish book series try to last as long as possible. At first when I read Fruits Basket, it was a cute story with a stupidly-funny protagonist and rather yummy harem of males. Treading farther, I found it to be deeper than imagined, it shed its picturesque first impression and became a story of life and its instances of ups and downs. Sometimes things became emotional to the point where I shed tears upon reading it; something I had never experienced beforehand reading a manga. Fruits Basket demands and squeezes quite a few emotions from its readers, and its stories of hope, undying love, desperation, forgiveness and sadness have you craving for so much more. Fruits Basket is one of those things in life where you absolutely can't describe it, you have to experience it to fully understand (It's like a trip to Cuba. Anyone understand that? :]). So, if you have time, please give this series a try. You won't be disappointed.

I thought it was terrific. But I can't go so far as to give it a 10/10. There were too many unresolved issues when it ended, the story didn't feel finalized. Those last couple of pages also feel like tacked-on sentimentality.

8/10

I re-read this manga and went back to look at what i had wrote at that time and i feel that i should write a new, fresh comment because my views now are different from 3-4 years ago when i had first read it.

Although this Manga is obviously unrealistic.. there are also truths about life hidden in this masterpiece. It teaches you about Friendship, Love and Time. By time, i mean the concept that it will wait for no one and that some point in your life, you will have to make a choice for the path you will be taking because time cannot stop and wait for you. This manga teaches you about experiences and encountering different people that will shape your life. I guess you can say it's a very deep manga about finding yourself and finding love. Although its deep, the mangaka also seems to have blended comedy into it as well to make it fun.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
The ending was bitter sweet because it shows the reality of goodbyes and that somehow sooner or later people will have to start living their own lives themselves. The brilliant thing about this manga is that it seemed to capture that loneliness that the characters feel as they make their own beginning and transfer that emotion to the readers. This creates a sort of connection or more so, a BOND between the viewers and the characters, leaving us in a state where we don't want the series to end.

There's simply no words to describe this manga.
Highly recommend it and it will teach you a thing or two about life.

Tired of predictable plotlines and endings? Want something that'll keep suprising you, even when you thought there were no surprises left? READ THIS MANGA.

This manga is one every shoujo fan should read. It starts out seemingly similar to many shoujos; with an innocent orphan girl living with a bunch of guys, two of whom like her. But it gets so much much more complex. What I love about this story is that all the characters have a history, and all their histories are connected and intertwined. And people you would never guess of having an interesting past turn out to be the ones with the most interesting pasts.

None of the characters are one-dimensional, and you are constantly learning new things that you never guessed but explain so much about why the characters are who they are. This is the sort of manga you have to go back through and read over, because all along there are hints of whats to come that you might not notice if you don't know what you're looking for.

Also, the relationships in this manga are very believable as well as intriguing; not just the romantic relationships (of which there are many) but also the friendships, the sibling relationships, the parent-child relationships, and the most mysterious relationship of all: the one between the head of the Sohma family and the rest of the family. It becomes clear early on that that relationship is the most complex of all, and you can't help but wonder why the members of the Sohma family never go against the head's wishes, even when he is so cruel to them.

So overall, this manga has a wonderfully complex plot, one that I haven't seen the likes of in any other shoujo manga (all though The Gentlemen's Alliance Cross comes close), with very interesting characters and very interesting character development. It speaks to the beauty and darkness of different relationships, and just when you think you've got it figured out, the story will throw you a curve ball. It's conclusion might be called a little too perfect, but I think it's very well done, and it suits the rest of the story well. Overall it's a very humane wonderful story, that also manages to include the stereotypical shoujo humor that so many of us enjoy (the first half of the manga, is lighter-it's the second half that really takes a darker turn). READ IT READ IT READ IT. From beginning to end. The art is ok in the beginning, but gets more and more beautiful as the story progresses. I was quite amazed by the artwork by the time I got to the end. So read it. You won't regret it.

I just reread fruits basket. Even I can't believe how much I've cried today. The characters of the story are lovely, and you just have to root for all of them. The art starts off shaky, but the beautiful thing about this manga is that you can see the author growing with the characters. Everything in this story seems to happen for a reason too. You can't help wishing things would go better for all of the characters. And at the end when everything turns out well and there's a happy ending for almost everyone, you still find yourself crying... first of all because you wish it didn't have to end...
and second of all because you see Tohru and Kyo grow old together and realize that nothing can last forever. It also makes you wonder what happened to the other characters >< It makes you wish you saw them at the very end too... just because they were so lovable.

Fruits Basket made me cry like no other book or manga ever has.
the characters are some of the most relatable I've ever seen. (okay so not until the 10th volume or so) Now since other people have covered the plot and the art and stuff, I'll focus on character.
Tohru- She seems too unrealistic to you right? Well I admit Ive never seen anyone like her. But I see her a relatable because how many people do you know that hide part of themselves away? Yeah, I know a lot too.
Kyo- Kyo is wonderful lol...Hes angsty,hot,angsty...But tragic...he's very good at balancing out other characters softer personalitys.
Yuki-Now he is not BORING! He is COMPLEX. I think the author does excellent drawing a character that never knew the warmth of a mother, Yuki has his feelings locked away form when he was very small....of course he would be quiet and reserved.

Art: 8/10 at the beginning and it got worse as the series progressed, so it's a 6 now.
Storyline: 9.5/10
Characters: 7/10
Originality: 9/10
Character development: 8/10

Art - I have to say that I'm disappointed in the art work. In the beginning of the series, the characters looked average with their big and shiny eyes, but as the series progressed, the artwork deteriorated dramatically and I have no idea why. In most manga the art gets better and better, but in FB it got worse. The mangaka claimed that she drew them in a way to make them look more mature, but I think she should've stuck with what she got. The characters DO look a bit older, but their eyes and the face in general just look odd now. That's not a good thing because the art is THE main attraction of manga (since it's all about visual), so it should be at top quality.

Storyline: I really like the story. The mangaka used the twelve zodiacs and applied an interesting background to it, which I think is brilliant. It has many twists in the story and each of them kept wanting more.

Characters: I think the main characters in FB are kind of dull (besides Kyo). Tohru is hopelessly naive and too optimistic and kind to be realistic. I certainly don't think anyone is capable of Tohru's pure kindness and her ability to forgive. Another one of the main characters, Yuki, is boring as hell. Aside from being a gentle and sweet guy, he is nothing more than a character that appeals to everyone in the story (besides Kyo, of course). The few impressive characters in FB are Kyo, Shigure and Akito. Kyo--being possessed by the cat spirit--has an interesting background which excludes him from the zodiac family. In the series, it shows how determined he is to gain acceptance and how he slowly overcomes his insecurity. He also has a cute personality, but his anger gets a bit over the top sometimes. And his behavior and feelings toward Tohru is just adorable :) . Shigure is probably the most likeable character in the series. He is funny, but not the cliche or stupid kind. He is funny in his unique way, as opposed to some comedic characters in other manga that just act plain dumb and irritating (which are more often annoying than funny). Akito, I must say, is a unique character that you don't see often. S/he starts off as cruel and abusive just for the hell of it, but as the plot goes further you start to see the deeper side of his/her story. Even though I don't like Akito, I certainly think s/he is one of the most well thought-out characters in FB.

Originality: Using the Chinese zodiacs and apply them into an interesting story takes a lot of creativity. I'm impressed :) Also, the transformation issue (which they transform into an animal after being hugged by the opposite gender) is quite funny, but also gets annoying sometimes (when you seriously want to see some action on Kyo and Tohru =P)

Character development: I think Kyo has the best character development in FB, some of the points which I mentioned earlier in the characters section. On the other hand, Tohru does not grow at all. At the beginning, she is already a saint. She cruises through the story being the happy go lucky girl that she was, and still the same in the end of the series. The only thing that changed about her was her devotion to Kyo, which obviously did not exist at the start of FB. Aside from gradually being comfortable with Tohru and his brother, I don't think Yuki has really developed much. He's too plain to be anything more, really.

Anyway, I think FB is a good choice if you're aiming for some comedy and shoujo. I'd say to steer clear from it if you get bored quickly if there isn't romance going on, because the mangaka spends a lot of chapters on the side characters unfortunately.

I started to read this manga a long time ago but somehow lost interest around volume 8... but I cant even recall why... however I started to reread this manga and was surprised how heart wrenching it became during the last volumes. I really cried several minutes and that did not happen before!

If you are a fan of unfinished stories you should simply skip the last or even the two last volumes, so you will be able to image what happens to the characters on your own smile
