[m]Darker than black: Shikoku no hana[/m]

The anime is just called 'Darker than black." The sequel is "Darker than black gemini of the meteor." And then you got the OVAs. I suggest you don't watch the sequel though...

I recomend: baccano! (don't get discouraged by the confusing first episode), samurai champloo, black lagoon (totally action packed), monster (the best ever if you manage to watch the first 12 episodes), michiko to hatchin, mononoke (very specific - you either love it or hate it), seirei no moribito - these have quite a lot of action (maybe not in mononoke)
Here are some others: mushishi, bokurano, higurashi no naku koro ni (plus the sequel "...koro ni kai" ; just bear with the ugly graphics, this anime is great), scrapped princess, noein, paranoia agent, wolf's rain and maybe death note

I second Darker than Black--first season--the 2nd one is crap.

If you want action packed with violence, nicely paced with just badass characters and two of the funniest anime duos you will find anywhere then watch Baccano!. baccano! is probably one of the best animes out there, the storytelling style is also different as in its not linear but it all fits together. There is some insanely awesome action as well, violence when necessary, a lot of violence actually like well arms getting cut off and the sort and there is also some awesome romance as well. So yea watch Baccano!

There is also

Eureka Seven---mecha, romance plays a big part, lots of character development. 50 episodes and there is like maybe 1 or 2 filler episodes and i never got bored.

Ergo Proxy--future end of the world kinda thing, some action, some romance like very little, awesome art(one of my favourites) and a different kind of female lead and also male lead. Male lead looks like a loser at the beginning but give it a couple of episodes and you will see him change. I really liked the plot.

Spice and Wolf---if you are looking for romance then this is one of the best out there for me. Awesome relationship between the female lead and male lead. Both are quite intelligent and mature.
There is also trading and stuff involved which is also quite interesting. Also the first episode doesn't truly reflect how this anime is gonna play out, so yea watch perhaps the first 3-4 episodes and see. If you are looking for romance pretty sure you will like this. Season 2 is even better.

Code geass--yea I think you probably have heard about this one.

Kara no Kyoukai---this is a movie and there is 7 movies out there. This has some really good action scenes(swordplayetc), a pretty badass female lead and also romance. I liked the plot and also the 7 movies don't follow in chronological order but they are all really good with all of them giving you info about the main characters involved and also about the relationship between male and female lead. The 5th and 7th are the best out of the lot with the 5th one having some truly awesome action scenes.

Black Lagoon--first and 2nd season has been completed. Just all out good action with a decent enough plot. The female lead Revy is probably one of the most awesome female lead out there. Male lead is alright, the idealistic sort.

Sword of the stranger--samruai, excellent action, ordinary plot--movie.

First season is good but nothing special, but the second season is amazing

Anything I rated excellent or master piece on my list, and Angel Beats.

I also very much trust this guy's judgements

And neither of us have updated some ratings, so don't forget the movie Summer Wars.

Inuyasha is one of my favorites. The second part is called Inuyasha: the Final Act and it completes the story.

Edited to add: How about Onegai Teacher and Onegai Twins? Not action but they are cute.
