I'm a bit tired of seeing just cute girls with overall the same personality, so I'm wondering if there are any suggestions for manga with female leads that have personality (stands up for herself, can get angry, isn't a complete ditz, etc). An example would be Skip Beat. If the manga had romance that would be a big plus.

Thanks! c:

Shinobi Life Shes a bit different than other shoujo girls because at the beginning she doesn't mind dying.
Six Half I Totally recommend, you wont see anyone like this main lead anywhere else.

7 Genme wa Himitsu One of my favorite manga's. I just feel like this protagonist is different..

Btw all these story's have great plots!

I most definitely second Warau wa Kanoko-sama, and also suggest it's sequel Koi Dano Ai Dano. They're phenomenal.

Also, try
Beauty Pop
Gokuraku Seishun Hockey Bu

In some ways, the girls of Dengeki Daisy and Penguin Brothers.

Bonnouji
Melo Holic you'll understand later why I put this here
Akagami no Shirayukihime
Ties of Compassion
Usagi Drop
Sarashi Asobi

the more promising newer ones (at least for me):
Dear Tear short though
Last Game
Hibi Chouchou
Pika Ichi

all of them should have unusual females (in some way)

I wonder if you want to try Usotsuki Lily. The heroine is not ditzy nor shy and she's really down to earth which makes me like her a lot LOL.

Oresama Teacher is hilarious. If you liked Skip Beat! this is also great. Not associated with Showbiz though. It's about a former gang leader (female) trying to get actual friends at her new school (she was expelled). Funnier than it sounds.

W Pinch!! the second personality of the girl is ridiculous! The normal personality is what you're trying to avoid so...i guess that's up to you. The split personality is worked in well as well as the romance. The evil side is...interesting.

Ouran Koukou Host Bu is also REALLY good. If you like Beauty Pop, which I second, then you'll like Ouran. Everyone in Ouran is quirky. The girl, Haruhi, is DEFINITELY different. But the romance is endearing.

SA is also a good read if you like Oresama Teacher or Kaichou wa Maid-sama!. Kaichou wa Maid-sama is also entertaining. SA is a little long and the plot is typical but it's cute with all the side couples. Everyone in SA also have little problems with their personality but that's what makes it so much fun. It's the same with Kaichou wa Maid-sama. The male loves the female first, which is obvious from the beginning.

I'm trying to use different adjectives...but it's hard. All these main girl lead are crazy...
eek

If you liked Skip Beat! and Kyoko's weird ups and downs, Kodomo no Omocha would also fit. It also has a show biz taste to it. Family issues are brought up so it's also really touching rather than just hilarious. Even the mom is strange.

Maybe you just want a strong female lead...then Tokyo Crazy Paradise will be a go! Plus it's by the same mangaka as Skip Beat! if that helps.

hmmm none

Arisa It's not really the girl herself, but the people in the story are mental. It's about a cult. It's really creepy, but the girl is also head strong.

HAVE FUN!

*edit if i find more*

I second Gokusen! She's so awesome and the manga gets progressively better and better!

Okay... I hope that you don't shun me after I recommend these two works. I just read them last night, and... I don't even... I can't... well... you can make an opinion for yourself. All I know is, I'm keeping an eye out for this mangaka.
Mud has a very... VERY "interesting" female lead.
Don't Cry, Girl -- I consider the female lead to be very strong in an incredibly awkward situation.

You could give these a go:
Akuma to Love Song
Hot Blooded Woman
Basara
Red Lion
Purikyuu
~ all the ones mentioned above have either aggressive personalities or aggressive rolls. The one bellow, the girl isn't physically or mentally strong, you said you didn't want a ditz but she is a little ditzy, but just so strange that I could not stop laughing, and I have read it heaps of times.

Bijo ga Yajuu (known elsewhere as Beaty is the Beast)

My personal favorite is Shima from Ikuemi Ryo's Principal. I haven't loved a shoujo character as much as I've loved this girl. embarrassed
