Hi, I tried for 10 years to persuade my sister to watch anime and we saw Princess Tutu together. Now she wants something similar, but I don't have anything. The problem is, she wants something romantic, where the characters are not retarded. With a normal story, so not only the romantic thing. It should be ended and shouldn't have many episodes. Magic knight rayearths is good example too. I need something to hook her.

I definitely know she would enjoy things like Mushishi, Dennou coil and Haibane Renmei, but as she wants something with romantic subplot, she doesn't want to watch it.

Princess Tutu is quite a complex anime imho (it's probably the first deconstruction of the mahou shoujo genre that I'm aware of). Something on the same wavelength is Utena in my opinion, or the more recent Mawaru Penguindrum. They're both very complex though.
I admit that knowing her age and what she liked about Princess Tutu could help, because it can be interpreted as both a fairy tales and a deconstruction of a fairy tale.

If she just wants short anime strongly centered around romance, my picks would be in this order Ginban Kaleidoscope (It's one of my personal favorite, despite being extremely underrated and unappreciated), Hanbun Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, True Tears.
Alternatively for something still romantic, but with also an action plot, a good pick would be also Higashi no Eden, despite its bizarre starting it follow almost an Hollywoodian development, something that someone not extremely familiar with anime could easily enjoy anyway. Another even better anime is Steins;Gate, but I admit that can be confusing if she isn't mature enough (there are also a good amount of otaku references, but it's the best anime with romantic subplot I can think off, probably).

Also, does she ever watched Studio Ghibli movies? They're the safest choice probably.

allright. She is 24 already (twin sister), so no mahou-shoujo for 12 years. Princess Tutu is indeed very good anime. She liked at it that it went from normal to something more dark. The romance she enjoyed at it was AhiruxFakir, she also liked the bittersweet ending. But I think she would be happy with a bad ending like the everyone dies ending and such. Also, supernatural or magic elements are good, and grand finale is perfect. A very important element is a story. The fairytail like story, with beginning, something, ending, fighting, epic finale sort of. Not just girl meets boy, romance story.

Sword art online looks too moe even for my liking.

Fruits basket anime didn't end and she won't read manga (although I started to read manga because of this one, so good strategy). What I ment with "should be ended"= has an actual ending

I seriously think about Eureka seven. I only read the manga, which is after anime. and I liked it. can someone tell me the differences between those two? I didn't really want to watch the anime, because I've read somewhere that Anemone and Dominic (my fav. from manga) don't have a big role in it.

Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne is a no, because it's too long and doesn't focus on the story. It's more or less episodic. and too shoujoish.

I personally didn't like Prétear, so no.

Did Utena have a satisfactory ending? (I would still rather read the manga before so if the manga will be fine, maybe we will watch it)

Steins;Gate manga isn't finished so there. Just purely my preference.

And of course, Ghibli, but I was looking for a series, so we could watch a few episodes a day, not a movie.

I've only watched the anime, so I don't know everything for sure, but I can highly recommend the anime
It has an amazing soundtrack and your favourite pair still get their happy ending.
I've heard there is more character development in the manga though.

Oh yeah I think xamd: lost memories is also a good choice
In a way its similar to eureka seven, it has a romantic plot as well.
If you decide that eureka seven isn't good ( though its amazing) you can try xamd

Steins;Gate anime is really good .It has some nice twists and the epic ending that you're looking for.The manga and anime are based on the visual novel so it doesn't matter if the manga is still ongoing.

Mirai Nikki

kokoro Connect: Sci-fi phenomenon with romantic sub plot. Character driven plot.

Eureka Seven anime is told almost completely from Renton's point of view IIRC, so most of the other characters don't feel as prominent.

Why not Code Geass? It has a good plot, strong characters, and although romance takes a backseat, it's there. I also recommend Kara no Kyoukai, FMA: Brotherhood and Cowboy bebop. All of these are popular due to their universal themes.

Steins;Gate anime had an amazing plot but it's better it's even better if you understand all the pop culture references. Visual novel > anime > manga btw.

ah okay then Spice and Wolf should be fine, reid1's Hantsuki is worth a shot, it is quite serious and sad though, I recommend Usagi Drop as well, it doesn't really have romance, but I have yet to find someone who doesn't like this one.

I really want to add Shinsekai yori but it is still ongoing...

Ok, after everything you said and with a better understanding I'll correct what I said before:
for Utena, I'd say the ending is satisfactory, but we're talking about an anime I watched at the beginning of this century. I apologize in advance if I recall it wrong. But from what you said above I'm not so sure it would be the best pick, because it's kinda of redundant at a certain point (a kid would probably not mind to see the same transformation scene every episode, but I can't say the same for an adult not muc into anime), still it seems to me a decent option. From the same director I'd have said it was better Mawaru Penguindrum but I totally forgot when I mentioned it before that the story deals with a brother having romantic feelings for his sister, I don't know if that could be a turn off for you.

I still think that Higashi no Eden is the safest option if you want something enjoyable but it's not something that will blow your minds, making you scream "masterpiece! masterpiece!".
Another good option that I just thought off is Gosick, despite its cute design the story gets kind of serious later on, and the ending imho is very fitting. Also, the detective case aren't cheap, either. It's all about how you feel about the characters, if you like them I can guarantee that the story won't let you down later on.
About good ending, I can't forget to mention Chrno Crusade, simply because it's probably the only anime with a better ending than the manga, at least for my opinion (and probably hers too according to what I read in your quote). But the romance is more hinted than shown, still the story is touching, it could be worth a shot.

If you want to bet on something majestic and if she can digest sci-fi, there is Kaiba which deals with very heavy stuff (dystopian society, sense of identity, immortality, etc.), has pretty harsh scenes and has an experimental animation, but it has absolutely one of the best story ever told, an extremely good romantic subplot and a lot of sadness. A safer choice on the sci-fi genre is probably Steins;Gate, which has a nice ending (the story follows one route from the game, so don't worry about the manga), but there are many otaku-ish jokes.

I'm not gonna say more about Ginban Kaleidscope, Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, etc. because they're romance related story. That pretty much sums it, they're my favorite romance anime, but they mostly deal about that (well Ginban Kaleidscope is about figure staking also).

Unrelated stuff: I'd not try Spice & Wolf. Despite being one of my favorite novel and anime, you're gonna be disappointed if you want closure. Shinsekai Yori is probably the best running anime, and the best of 2012, but the beginning was very confusing for me, it's not something I'd probably suggest to someone who only watched a single anime.

The Rose of Versailles - it just came out in its first North American release, and I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know if it covers the full story of the manga. Very influential.

I don't watch a lot of anime, but for what it's worth in my opinion the best follow-up to Princess Tutu is Utena. I would not suggest this to a very young girl, but your sister is old enough. roll eyes It's got fairy tale elements in a mature storyline. I'm also a Fakir x Ahiru girl, so I have to say there is no comparable romance in Utena. There are however lots of romantic complications, swordfighting, drama, comedy, pulling swords out of people, epicness, and an infamous mind-screw ending. It's not for everyone, may not be for you, but its fans are rabid. It will not help you to read the manga first, though, as the story is different.

Full disclosure: my avatar is from Utena. laugh

Here's a couple AMVs to give you the flavor of Utena:
Touga's Bringing Sexy Back
You have no choice but to Revolutionize the World
The Prince and the Kappa, with Saiyuki

And while I'm completely off topic recommending AMV's, your sister will love this one for Princess Tutu - Princess Tutu - Hold Me Now
