They aren't all like that. It's just that ppl keep translating the ones by Hwang Mi Ri and Han Yu-rang.

Agreed! BHOH was my first and last Hwang Mi Ri series. But the thing with the HMR author is that they come up with the most interesting, most intriguing titles. It's easy to get sucked into the series because of their titles. But yeah, the plot is the same for each.

My cheese-tolerance is high and I prefer shojo over every other genre. But, I couldn't get myself to like
Kaichou wa Maid-sama! because of the main guy and the girl's attitude that's a cross between radical 'justice for the poor" mentality and being a man-hater. I also don't get why most fans call her "strong". The way the character is developed is too bitter for my taste, even if she has less things to be bitter about than the plot of Bitter Virgin (which I liked).

Edit: I've given it a chance, but now I decided I don't like Kyou, Koi wo Hajimemasu -- I liked this at first because I treated it as "kimi ni todoke parody without the pure love and the idealistic perspective of KNT" but there's just so much bad plot one person could take.

This thread makes my head want to implode.

While I agree with a lot of choices here, I can't understand how anyone who likes reading shoujo can dislike HYD or NANA. These are classics, I tell ya XD

^ Second that.
But I haven't read HYD, yet... :x

Vampire Knight.
The beginning was interesting, then there was the twist, and it dragged on. (The artwork's still great though!) Also when the anime adaption released, I couldn't stand the first episode, and it attracted a lot of otaku Twilight-fans left over.

Shinjo Mayu and Kayono works.
No. Just no. I don't even want to talk about them.

Sakura Hime Kaden. Is it even popular?
Honestly, Tanemura is one of my favourite shoujo mangakas. However since Full Moon and half-way through SDC, everything went down hill, and the eyes just got bigger.

Special A.
This one got really boring and repetitive, really no character progress besides relationships. Same with The Wallflower.

I agree with both. I'm still reading Vampire Knight though, but it got too long. The story's not well planned, it's just as if Matsuri Hino-sensei wants to stretch it.
And since the end of SDC, Tanemura's manga became worse...too many irrelevant details and sorta oversized & angular shaped eyes.

I also don't like NANA that much.

I agree with a lot of your choices. I started reading VK just when it was getting real popular, and though I liked it, it still read like your typical shoujo. While I like the art - and I'm a fan of love triangles in general - VK just dragged on and on. While some of this could possibly be attributed to bad scanlating, the plot was almost incomprehensible after a point. The characters are one-dimensional and Yuuki is cookie cutter shoujo heroine. I liked her character for only a couple of volumes, and then it went straight downhill. There's probably more stuff I could tack on here, but I'm sure most of you get the point.

Shinjo Mayu is definitely a mixed bag. I only really like one of her mangas and it was only 3 chapters long. Anything past that is beyond enduring. She's not as terrible as some, but her characters all inevitably end up being the same. I think she's as popular as she is because she's one of few prolific manga-kas that writes smut. Most smutty works are usually one shots or a couple of volumes in length with no real story line. That's why I've always enjoyed NANA. Ai Yazawa was never afraid to incorporate sex into her work without it being terribly unrealistic or cheesy.

I never understood the fascination for Tanemura either. Everyone would recommend Full Moon, but as soon as I saw the art, I immediately stopped. All her characters look 12 and while there's plenty of shoujos where the females look young, all her male characters look like children too. It's hard for me to seriously read about their romantic pursuits when I felt like I was looking at 12 and 13 year olds.

Urgh, I hit submit reply before I finished. And one more thing, The Wallflower, I honestly don't get this manga's appeal. The only real thing it has going for it is the unconventional heroine, but that's about it. The art is terrible, I had a hard time believing these guys were so gorgeous when they were anything but. Not only that, the art is lazy. Hardly any backgrounds or detail to anything. I felt like I was looking at scribblings half the time. I stopped reading at volume 10 when I realized that the story was going absolutely nowhere.

Oh and you should totally read Hana Yori Dango ASAP biggrin

Well...
Vampire Knights had too much angst and I hate anything that's draggy.
Merupuri was sort of boring for me (don't even know if it's popular)
The Bride of the Water God really confusing storyline and I couldn't take it...

HWANG Mi Ri
embarrassed

Vampire Knight
Liked it in the beginning, not anymore now. Everything gets complicated and boring. Yuuki also loses her appeal >_<

Parfait Tic!
She keeps going back and forth between the 2 guys, all those moments in the manga just tire me out

Kaichou wa Maid-sama!
Um, really, is she THAT dumb and shy and... ugh... I wanna shoot her somehow x(

Sakura Hime Kaden
It's lame. Yeah, just lame. (Is it even popular?)

Honey Hunt
What's the deal with the mother and daughter in this manga? It's annoying, I hate the main girl mad

Shugo Chara!
I do like some parts of the manga, though it's a little too "cute" for me. I am a fan of all things cute, but this just rubs on my wrong side somehow...

Kyou, Koi wo Hajimemasu
I couldn't take the girl and the story anymore. Everyone is evil, except the "WONDERFUL" heroine who just can't wait to get on everyone's good side T_T

Goong
Eew, can't they just freaking end the story ALREADYconfused?

Uwasa no Midori-kun!!
The gender bender thing just can't make up for the lack of skill in manga writing...

Some Hwang Mi Ri works. I like some, but many of her characters are just cookie-cutter products. I just get SO pissed off reading about stupid girls who eat uncontrollably, and are way aggressive, but always have guys falling like leaves from trees for them *insert disgust sound effect*. Yeah, right, and the guys are (mostly) always smart and unbelievably good at fighting; the girl just has to have the best, I guess *barf*. I like Han Yu-rang works better (for now)
Works by SHINJO Mayu. It's like all she ever thinks about is how the guy can sexually get the girl to like him...

That reminds me. I also hate certain ecchi and harem stuffs. I mean, everyone has different references, so I can never get how a guy (girl) can make everyone around him fall in love with him. And too much fan services are distracting -___-

Phew, that's it for now, I could come up with some more, but then I'm not sure if they're even popular or not

btw, I love Skip Beat a lot ^^ Though it does have some down-sides to it. But I love it, yeah, just saying lol

Kyo, Koi wa Hajimemasu - for the reasons above mentioned. Kimi ni Todoke is MUCH better. eyes

Kare Made Love - can you say "cliche" or "typical shoujo crybaby"? Seriously. I almost threw up. dead

Yumerio Patisseire is cute, but really cliched with. It reminds me too much of Kitchen Princess, except with a worse female lead (although I have to admit that Kitchen Princess's female lead was a little Mary-Sue).

I never got into Nana for some reason...=/

A lot of shoujo Korean manwhas really bother me because of the art (too stiff) or the characters (that sometimes make me want to pull my hair out).

I LOVE Arina Tanemura--I love her gorgeous and detailed artwork...but Sakurahime Kaden...I don't really understand it. =/ Too fantasy for me. Plus, I don't like how every one of her main female characters look the same with different hairstyles. none

Vampire knight- I couldn't stand the first volume I tried to read it up to the fifth but it never got any better...
Parfait Tic - she can't just stay with just one guy, going back and forth and back and forth-urgh
[m]Fushigi yugi[/m]
[m]Sakura hime kaiden[/m] - just *sigh*.... her works are losing their quality by each new manga she creates..
Shugo chara- beginning was fine but it quickly lost it's 'shine'
[a]SHINJO Mayo[/a]- her works are ...
Kayono- never really liked her manga but really started to dislike her after the lawsuit...I mean she plagiarised and won, sure I don't care about that, but forcing the other mangaka (one who lost) from ever creating manga again is just too cruel... no

Haha, smile, I couldn't help but see your comment on Kaichou Wa Maid-sama, and I wanna say something. ^^
Later on in the story, (well, just recently, around 40 and on, i think?), she's not that dumb and shy anymore wink Teehee. ^^ Stuff happens. biggrin And makes her realizes stuff. ;D Haha. So yeaaaa. x) Well, dont wanna sound like a spoiler to anyone who haven't read it. & it's your opinion on the manga, so okay. ^^

--

Vampire Knight-- =_=;; don't like the heroine...she's too...stoooopid =_=;
Fushigi yugi--the heroine is annoying. nothing else to it.
Bride of the Water God--the art is gorgeous but the storyline is moving so slow! and all the stupid 'mysterious' crap. the author could show US, THE READERS, what's going on, and the characters don't need to know, but noooo. the author just keeps us in the dark as well. =__=;; all the mysteriousness is too much, not necessary.
Peach Girl--Dont like the heroine.

There are a couple more...but can't think of them right now.
