i don't get what you're asking.. since the title is so different from the question you're asking. XD

"Do you know the difference between a good manga and a fashionable one?"

Fashionable as in..? modern?

"Why are some bad mangas so popular in the short run, and what causes certain good mangas to be so few?"

none Because some good mangas get licensed and we can't read it?

Wierd question, but i think it is the exact same question as:
" Why the fu@k du people listen to Britney Spears and all that Boyband shit instead of listening to decent music such as ......."

Tastes vary, many people read manga for many different reasons, and i have no clue why people listen to britney Spears.

the only way to universally define "good" manga is by asking people what they think. And here at MU we have a great system for that, just check the ratings.

but isn't it because good mangas become licensed and then we can't read them because some people don't buy.. and so if we can't read them, how are we going to make it popular? XDDD so it's licensing fault. none

First of all maybe the OP should specify what are some of the mangas he means because without it I cannot comment on statements like Bully's because If say for instance he's Talking about One piece I would say how can you even compare a manga like that to Britney Spears (complete commercial trash) confused also I could know what mangas are these "bad" mangas that people like so much cause I could say for instance Berserk was a bad manga that seems to be popular with a crowd of people who consider themselves readers of more sophisticated manga when they are just reading it cause their brains are pre conditioned by the community to think that way when they are really just reading Garbage.

FYI I like Berserk it was just an example that popped into my head cause I saw someone mention it somewhere biggrin

The point I'm trying to make is you only gave an example of a good manga. not a bad one. You gave an example of a bad singer/group (spice girls) but like I said Apples and Oranges. Apples and oranges biggrin

Nope. I will not name any manga.

I can assure you, if I name any bad manga (the one I think its a bad manga) it will start a war in the forum because everybody has an opinion about that manga that it seams to be good.

To sad to hear, or read o whatever this:

1. it could be your opinion.
2. hype
3. people lose interest. repetition can cause people to lose interest. pokemon comes to my mind. i started watching subs and dubs but after a while it was the same thing over and over. quality is never constant. some arcs in manga are more enjoyable to read and some are not and people start to lose interest.

you jump very far! just wanted to say that there are some manga/anime series, that follow trends and are even created to become fashionable. those who are licensed before even being published for instance. that doesnt make them bad manga by definition, still something good can happen.
as for the art question. sure some manga can be called art.

not everybody can appreciate the same the same.
people are equally unequal.
matter of taste.

Fashionable as in trendy. Fads. Mangas people pick up because everyone else is reading them (or at least that's what they think).

I honestly don't think they're that bad. I mean, they are popular for a reason (brainless macho entertainment appeal), and you can go through the mangas pretty fast so you don't get overly bored.

But when they get made into an anime... *shudders*

I guess different people like different types of manga.

For example: strangely enough, I like Naruto, HxH, Bleach, FMA, Aqua, YKK, Hourou Musoku, Leviathan, Ares, Demon Sacred, Oz and various other shoujo, shounen and seinen titles. Yet, I can't get into Berserk or Change Guy, Hajime Ippo, etc. or even a lot of shoujo romance stories.

I guess I like my shounen and seinen to be a combo of strategy, plot, story and characters I can identify with or like. For shoujo, same too. Oh and I gotta like the art too.

So, for most people, there has to be something they like: whether it's the art, the characters, the story, the atmosphere in the manga, the subject of the story, etc., etc. or something else.

Because nowadays good mangas gets exploited and commercialised when it gets popular. Meaning: a lot of fillers and extreme merchandising.

In the past, Dragonball. Now you got Bleach, Naruto.

Slam Dunk, it kept true to it's original story.
Weirdo newbie starts basketball to get a girl but start to love basketball. And there is a finish line, they only got one year before school's finished.
The artwork gets better and better.

Bleach, Naruto would continue forever. Just like Ah my Goddess and Inuyasha...

I'm not particularly knowledgeable, but I'mma take a stab.

A manga might start out good and drop in quality, but rides on the initial popularity and remains popular. Ie Naruto. Did you notice that as the series went on, especially after the time skip, not only did the art and story quality drop, the chapters became shorter and shorter? Or perhaps it's only the pressures of being a successful mangaka, I dunno what goes on in their heads. It seems like this happens a lot. In fact, I'd even say Dragonball Z fits into this category, if only because it didn't demonstrate what made Dragonball great.

And then there's the marketing thing. Series that the mainstream finds more 'acceptable' will always be more 'popular' than more niche series. Which is why a series like 'Naruto' is going to be more popular than, say, Homunculus(would ANYONE try to argue that Homunculus is inferior in quality to Naruto? I welcome you to try). Being aimed at a mainstream demographic is an incredibly valuable boost to a series's popularity, just because of the larger audience.

What gets a series remembered? Probably how much of an impact it made. No matter how good a series is, 30 years in the future, I highly doubt people are going to be talking about it if it wasn't making a big enough impact on the mainstream. Astro Boy was made forever and a day ago, and people still talk about it. Then again, Astro Boy was one of the first, so that's not terribly surprising.

Also how influential it was. I don't think that in the end 'quality' is going to make a manga remembered no matter how good it is if it didn't have a large enough audience. If it's not influential enough, if it didn't make a big enough impact, then it's not going to be remembered.

But then, I don't really know anything. Those are just guesses.

Oh, yeah. If the art/plot is really different and still good, then that'd probably be a really big deal.

I can understand why people like naruto and bleach, even my friend who normaly doesnt watch any anime at all can find himself enjoying in watching Bleach, because the plot is simple and lot's of action I guess, some people doesnt like to think while watching, I doubt that he will like Ghost in the Shell, Ergo Proxy.
