Quote from smichal
Check out chapter 397 on the page before last.
Aizen says to ichigo, "you are the son of a shinigami and ..."
And that's when ichigo's father appears to interupt him, so a lot of people assumed he meant shinigami and human.
But, ichigo already knew he was the son of a human, so whats the point of ishin interupting aizen when hes already revealed the supposed surprising fact (he had already said "shinigami").
The above doesnt make any sense on either the characters or (especially)the authors standpoint.

Quote from silent killer
I got another prediction that's been sitting on the backburner for a little bit, but I'll say it now. Ichigo and Ishida are twin brothers. That's why Uryu has never met his mom, and why his "dad" who is actually his uncle, Misaki's brother, behaves so coldly to him.

These two sound reasonable to me so far.
The only thing is how Kubo let his mom get killed so easily if she was a Quincy.

that was big it seems kubo new thing is to give heavy foreshadowing to big things so that we have to accept them but have them be so big or do them in away we can't accept them ie captain commanders death

Firstly, sorry for the long post. Secondly,

Quote from FormX
The only thing is how Kubo let his mom get killed so easily if she was a Quincy.

I discussed possibilities in the previous chapter's board, which I'll requote below:

Quote from xdude101
Actually, she did notice Grand Fisher, since she knew to get her son away from it. And as for why she couldn't kill it, that could be explained in one of many ways. First, maybe she had the strength/skill level at or lower than Ishida Uryu. As his father likes to point out, Uryu is basically talentless as Quincy go. Masaki could also be talentless. Second, Grand Fisher was apparently uber strong (until all the power levels got messed up... think Vegeta or Nappa from the first section of DBZ, before the Super Saiyan stuff or Frieza). Grand Fisher was a "Shinigami-killer" who would subsist primarily on trained spirit soldiers and people/beings with high reiatsu. Third, there was no time to fire an arrow (they don't sail at the speed of light), so she just used hirenkyaku and blocked him with her body in the nick of time. Fourth, and admittedly least likely, Grand Fisher HAD Ichigo, but spit him out when she offered herself in exchange.

As to why Ichigo doesn't have Quincy abilities, it's because both of his parents made the conscious decision not to tell their kids about them. Ichigo didn't even understand the concept of reiatsu until Rukia explained it. Ichigo just knew he could see ghosts, but never seemed to care about why until he met Rukia.

Masaki=Quincy has long been my prediction. Though currently I'm leaning toward the "father" revelation being a mislead. Juhabach has been technically dead for 1000 years, you'll remember. While nothing is impossible because of Urahara's suits, they were not actually created until just over a century ago, so the mean time requires some explanation on all fronts. Also, Ichigo is definitely not in one of those suits, because he had a chain attaching him to his body, and gigai don't do that as far as I can tell.

Now I'm gonna sit back and watch this play out just like Flame of Recca did (days of training alone, reflecting on this final battle and/or whether they want to actually fight it, followed by some crazy labyrinth where they have to split up and fight one on one). I know it already happened... twice... but those were just a replacement for the tournament that Kubo left out of the series. Ah, shounen cliches. Anywho, I hope it's as good as FoR (I miss watching Raiha being awesome...maybe I'll read that again).

This is just a random thought that occurred to me, but...

Doesn't the way Ichigo gained his initial Shinigami powers also kinda hint at his Quincy heritage? I mean, one of the major unique features of Quincy powers is the spirit particle subjugation, culminating in what happened to poor Allon.

It was stated right away that Rukia meant to give only a portion of her power to Ichigo so that he could whop the hollow, but instead he took it all. It would kinda make sense if this was actually caused by Ichigo instinctually going into power slurpy -mode.

And no, I'm not giving Kubo the benefit of doubt that he would have had it all figured out from the beginning. It's just a thing that kinda ties in neatly to what has happened before.

This dude cant be his father. Remember he has has Shinigami powers because his dad had them. If anything, Ichigos mom was a Quincy and this guy is his grandfather or something. At least, im hoping its this way. Id really like to think Isshin is his real dad cuz of that bond they have. .

Quote from Baalzebup
Ever heard of the term "adoptive father"? Ya know, Juha Bach getting Masaki with a child, she runs away for reason X with Ichigo in tow ("Son born in darkness" and the fact that he has supressed knownledge of very high level Quincy-techniques seem to be telling us that Ichigo was actually born in Quincy-land) and hooks up with Isshin.

Then to the important things. AKA aside from being a convenient excuse to fill out the "how" for Ichigo getting his latest upgrade, who cares that Bach is apparently Ichigos paternal progenitor? Ichigo has a family, one that he is happy with if you discount the dead mother, so he should just go "who cares" and keep on rolling.

@strixflash. Can't remember either way, but Masakis and Isshins dating is not a factor in determining the paternity issue. After all, one can date women who have had children as well. And whatever anyone has said.. there is always a possibility that someone is lying. Maybe Bach is, maybe Isshin & Co were.

@switchgear. Because Ichigo was just a massive lump of power with no specific shape or purpose when Rukia met him, due to said suppression of the Quincy powers. Ichigo took Rukias power and with that, his spiritual power gained .. a shape, if you will. A kind of a focus as to use his power. It seems a part of Ichigos protagonist talent that he can assume all know ways of using reiatsu rather easily, seeing as he became a Shinigami/Hollow hybrid without Aizen having a hand in it, unlike with the others, and learned Fullbring while (as far as we know) not quite fulfilling the requirement of having the mother being attacked by a hollow while pregnant.

And yes, all of this is just theory with some (but not solid) backing from the material we've seen so far. The most important thing to remember is that people can lie. Bach can lie, Aizen can lie, Urahara and Isshin can lie. Not a single stated thing must be true. They just may be true.

I think the reason he was able to get Fullbring is because a Hollow was created inside him when he got his powers back (when he awakened his own Shinigami powers). Instead of gaining Hollow powers from being attacked when he was in the womb, he gained them from his transformation but it's still basically the same thing, since both give you Hollow powers.

As for Isshin being his dad, I'm 90% sure he is since their Zanpakutou's are just too similar for it to be anything else but you never know since this is Kubo.

Actually guys, i think this the first time kubo didnt pull one out of his ass and actually thought of it a long time ago.
Second but not less important, beeing the son of a shinigami and a human never stroke me as something really special for aizen to set his eyes on since the time ichigo was born, that also made the whole deal more difficult to accept for me back then, so i thought there should be something more going on, but after some time of waiting in vain i thought kubo changed his mind about the whole thing and so i had given up hope of ever finding out.
Taking into account also that aizen has been referenced twice in the last few chapters, also makes me believe that there is some deeper connection than i initially thought.
So, after all this i have to say, well done kubo this is the first true twist i have seen in this manga,
it was about time

What he actually said was "That's because you're a human and..." and then Isshin shows up, showing him what he was going to say next.

Him being half Shinigami and half human (since Quincy are just humans after all, even though they can use spiritual powers) is probably rarer than we think. Yamamoto doesn't exactly strike me as the kinda guy would let his soldiers run off on him to settle down with a human (since Shinigamis are technically dead).

Juha is likely his grandfather or "father" of all Quincy (now, or possibly always has been) and that's why he called him "son".

Sorry for the long post.

I don't really care about the son comment. He is not Ichigo's father. Why would he bring up Ichigo's mother, if she was just a normal human?

I'm thinking that Ichigo's reitsu was unstable after breaking out of that prison, so his sword was weak, and that it why it broke. I was really hoping for something to actually happen (the death and destruction of the soul society lasted about four chapters), but it looks like we will have another training session coming up.

Whatever the case, I still find this series more interesting than One Piece at least.
Bleach is something I wouldn't want to end. Not until we learn about soul reapers in other continents at least.

This right here is the truth. Either Tite forgot that he did this or Bach has to be referring to him as he would any other subbordinate who he sees as a son.

I mean the fact that the swords are so similar that Isshin even knew how to power it up has to prove that he is the father. His "dad" uses Getsuga Tensho for f***ks sake, COME KUBO! get it together.

Not to say that the similarity of their zanpakutou isn't telling and a rather strong indication of a blood bond, but it is no guarantee. We do have an instance of a shinigami wielding and even achieving bankai with his wife's zanpakutou, after all. No blood relation there. I mean, adopting someone else's soul bonded weapon seems a bigger hurdle than two closely bonded people, blood relation or no, having very similar personal weapons.

Edit: Ah yes, they weren't married. I rememered it wrong. It was actually her husband that killed her and she was "just" a woman that Tousen admired.. Gah, I get my stuff mixed up.
