Ok...please don't hate me sad but I pretty much disliked Mars.

Reasons:

-The female (Kira?) was "too slow" for my tastes/I mean the way the mangaka portrayed her made her seem like a girl who was slow in understanding what was happening around her, esp. with her lover,Kei....later I found out about her past, but that was AFTER I could tolerate it

-Everyone says it's this very romantic story, but all I saw was two depressed people trying to find comfort in their life (which arguably is LOVE) but the whole tone of the work was utterly depressing and I couldn't stand to see the characters go through more hardships than they had already faced in their lifetimes ;/

I can't stand NANA, Vampire Knight, or Fruits Basket. They're so overrated. The Fruits Basket anime was okay, but the manga just got worse as it went on.

You've mentioned NANA at least twice in this thread. Care to at least elaborate as to why you don't like it?

I actually agree. I read Mars when I first started getting into shoujo. It was one of those heavily recommended shoujos, so I figured what the heck. I had some misgivings about the whole series after I finished it and because so many people liked it, I felt the need to like it too. Looking back, I think the series is vastly overrated. It's too emo and angsty for my tastes, and I love NANA for goodness sakes. It probably would have helped if I had liked the lead girl too. Her character was as bland as they come.

Everything she did got on my nerves. I thought she was rather pathetic and weak, and I usually like the shy character archetypes. Even though the storyline was rather unconventional what with the added psychological thread, it still came off rather trite.

I feel like there's a lot of popular shoujo I really couldn't get into. I know there's a lot more than what I have listed below, too, but since I'm never "reading" or have "completed" the series, I lose track of them. I only recently discovered the unfinished list. XD

First off, I hated Ouran High School Host Club. It was completely pointless; nothing ever happened. Similarly, I don't like Gokuraku Seishun Hockey Club, since... there's no plot to either of them, really.

If things happen to repeat all the time (read: drag on forever, or else have characters make no progress and development), I get really annoyed, too. Which is why Perfect Girl Evolution and Goong irritated me.

Faster than a Kiss, Hana to Akuma, and Kyou, Koi wo Hajimemasu bothered me, too. Koukou Debut bored me really quickly. I felt like The Bride of the Water God tried too hard; it was dull, too.

And all the typical popular-but-really-disliked-by-a-lot-of-people ones annoy me, too, like Vampire Knight, Special A, Hot Gimmick, or whatever else most people listed in here.

However, I think my most despised shoujo all fall under the category of anything written by Hwang Mi-Ri. Seriously.

Hot Gimmick - Pretty obvious as to why it's on this list.

Kyou, Koi wo Hajimemasu - The female lead.

The Bride Of The Water God - Dull, lifeless and confusing as heck. I picked it up because of the art, but now I can't stop purchasing the series just so I can complete the collection. Big regret.

There are many other shoujos I don't like, but I'm not sure which ones are deemed as popular. I'm also not a fan of Watase Yuu.

I don't agree with most titles mentioned here, but I can see why you guys dislike them, lol. 8D like OHSHC or Fruits Basket.

Ummm...to add more to this manga I've already listed, I started The Wallflower, but I really couldn't get into it. First off, it was developing way too slow. Now, in some cases, I like slow developments...like the ones I mentioned above, but this manga just didn't have anything else if it didn't have romantic moments. Like OHSHC I could deal with--since it had humorous moments, and Fruits Basket had an intriguing plot, but The Wallflower was practically pointless. Second, I couldn't connect AT ALL to the main female lead. Seriously, I can't connect with the reason as to why she has such a personality. Also, there are tooooons of typical shoujo cliches. Normally I don't mind cliches that much, since most shoujos I read are meant to be reading for fun, and not analyzing and such...but this manga...ugh, almost everything about it irritated me. AND it was even reverse harem! I usually love to read reverse harem! Lastly, I wasn't too fond of the art style. They had funny looking mouths. none
/rant on The Wallflower

There are also some mangas I really liked, but won't be reading anymore because it dragged too much.
Examples:
-(again, adding more to this) Vampire Knight: now, I really love almost everything about this. Fantasy, romance, the ART, bishies. 8D But as someone already mentioned, it became WTF-ish after a while. Ugh. Couldn't take the "who will Yuuki choose?" and the weird, confusing-as-heck plot twists anymore. Though I do love the other manga by the same author--Merupuri, that was such a good read. Ah, if only VK was as less confusing.
-Kimi no Todoke: wonderful manga. Until it became really predictable and dragged way too much.
-Sakurahime Kaden: ughh, it was too confusing. Too fantasy. Not realistic enough for me...confusing plot twists as well.
-Gakuen Alice: don't actually hate this or anything. But I haven't been taking an interest to this anymore...the plot needs to freaking end already. Srsly.

Ugh, I can't STAND Black Bird. SOOOO sexist. The guy treats her like crap.

@DayDreamer: That guy does exist. Only problem is he's gay.

thats why this genre is called smut smile . the female protagonists either get raped or used as sex tools, but in the end they love the guy.

vampire knight bugged the hell outta me. the art was the only reason i read it. also the hope that yuki will realize thet kaname is an ass and go to zero. i fuckin hate well mannered people.
i also didnt really like switch girl, becase i think shes sorta disgusting. im not super normal but i just dont like how wierd she is...
but i really like the wallflower because i like characters that dont fall in love with the person right away. im also a really big fan of comedy so i liked it alot. i only hate slow progress when the characters are obviously in love and dont have a single good reason to not get together, like " theyre too good to be held back by a person like me" kinda useless reason.

Yumeiro Patissiere
Gave up after reading like 3 chapters. I have shoujo girl with no girlfriend the most. They have like all these hot guys around them and 0 girl friend, its just plain annoying cause they are like so needy and everything. She deserves to be bullied by the other girls.

Hadashi de Bara wo Fume
For some reason the female lead pisses me off, I just really want to give her a slap or something >.>

Parfait Tic! - One of my most hated mangas of all time. The main character was awful (she cried her was through the ENTIRE manga--at no point in time was this girl ever not a heartbroken sobbing mess), and the two bishonen weren't much better as characters. Daiya fell for Fuuko totally randomly and had his personality changed in the process (from free spirited player to dull, perfect boyfriend), and poor Ichi was completely punked in order to make the audience hate him and prefer the Daiya x Fuuko couple. To add insult to injury, the manga tried to fob him off onto a Fuuko clone. If I could rate this thing in the negatives, I would.

Quote from hollabaloo
Strobe Edge

The heroine does nothing productive. All she does is pine for the male lead, and on top of that he has the personality of a cardboard box, in my opinion. Yes, he's nice, we get it already. I wish Mayuka was the heroine. She at least has character development, which is more than I can say for Ninako. sad

HIGH FIVE. You voiced my thoughts on that manga perfectly. Mayuka was a great character. She had character development, as you pointed out, and had problems at home and at work, not just relationship problems. She was so much more of a real character than Ninako who was unrealistically clueless and naive, and barely changed from beginning to end. And yes, Ren is one of the most boring manga characters ever. The fact that a large majority of the readership (inside AND outside of Japan) preferred the other guy should have told the magaka what a failure of a character he was.

Other than Strobe Edge, which is one of my most recent "why did I waste my time on this?!" shoujo mangas, I unfortunately have to say I dislike the majority of popular shoujos. I don't like most high school romance series because they've been done to death and it feels like I'm reading the same series over and over again.

Shoujo that isn't just about the romance (or the moe) is good shoujo. I really like shoujo manga when it's not the typical high school romance, like Yamamoto Zenjirou to Moushimasu. That's the kind of thing I read shoujo for. However, even when there is something a bit different about the story, I'll end up disliking it if it's overly cutsey. For example, I hated all the sentimentality of Fruits Basket and totally lost interest in it because of that. (After hearing that pretty much every single character ended up being paired off in the end, I'm glad I ended up dropping it because that would have irritated me.)

Hmm..
there were quite a few mangas that i gave up on reading ..

Kyou Koi wo Hajimemasu - I started reading it , but then the main lead got me pissed off for her personality . I don't even like the guy either . So I gave up on it .

Say I Love You - This was awkward for me . The girl was too strange that it bothered me when the guy actually liked her . I was hoping for something like the girl changing , but nothing like that happened . So I gave up .

Skip Beat! - This bothered me . Although I heard a lot of people like this manga , I didn't . I don't know , i like the whole concept of singing and becoming famous , but because she's doing it to get revenge on this guy, i was kinda annoyed . plus the characters were not my style.

Perfect Girl Evolution - I actually liked this manga , it kept me laughing the whole way . But i figured it was getting too long , i mean , it's still updating ! I just want an ending that will close all relationships , or just to settle down what's going on . I'm tired of reading one problem which they solve everyday . So i'm starting to give up on this one .

Koizora - I read this . but it annoyed the crap out of me . i like the movie and the drama , but that's it . i mean , i only read it 'cause i was fascinated on how their love survived and stuff like that , but after i found out that the story was actually fictional and not real , i stopped . And i'm guessing the mangaka stopped too .

Is it just me or has Vampire Knight taken a really strange turn? I dunno, the story seems scattered now (from v.11 on) I dislike it.
And it's not just me being bitter about Kaname.
