I don't know if it's true, but my economics teacher from last year, sometimes commented on the less developed educational level of public schools in America.. But he also said that the private schools did have a high level..

Correct me, if I'm wrong..

Even though US public schools are all "supposed to be" equal, a lot of the funding comes from property taxes, which vary a lot, so the schools also vary a lot. In general, in my experience, US schools are pretty good BUT they totally fail at offering languages other than English.

When I was in NY a friend of mine told me :"when you know three langages you are trilingal, when you know two, you're bilingal, when yu only know one, you're American.. " smile wink grin

And he was American laugh

Sad but mostly true. no
Not entirely our fault, since most school systems don't offer languages other than English until jr. high or high school, and even then there are often only 1-2 to choose from. Depending on where you live there may be other places to learn a language (private lessons, etc.) but a lot of places that's not available either.

I know English, a little bit of Latin from the semester I took in college, and tiny bits & pieces of French, Spanish, & German. I'm trying to learn Japanese, but it's a long, slow process. Learn 'em while you're young, it's a lot harder when you get older. dead

huh. in israel every student studies english from 3d grad and arabic from 7th.
but you can ditch arabic later on.

It's different in every country..

idk about amerika, but right now public high schools in israel are on strike.
there wasnt school for 18 days or so.

I am french and I lived 7 years in the States... that makes two.

Another thing about Americans that I heard from a friend: if an American talks to someone and it appears that person doesn't speak English, what does the typical American do? Repeat themselves except significantly louder.

Anywho, I speak English and can manage a conversation in spanish, though I haven't used it in one for years none . I'm taking Japanese classes, but it'll be a while before I can manage a conversation that doesn't involve baby phrases like "This book is red" and "That builiding is a school", etc. in Japanese. Funny how after knowing English you realize how much simpler some other languages can be when it come to stuff like pronunciation.

About the same age for the US. I graduated when I was 17, but my classmates ages ranged from 16 to 19, with probably most of them at 18.

Well it doesn't go strictly by age, but most people are 18 when they graduate - I got to graduate on my 18th birthday, never having to go back was the best present I could have gotten! laugh

Kids have to be 5 years old by a certain date (which varies depending on where you are) in order to start Kindergarten in the fall; or 6 by a certain date to start 1st grade if they don't go to Kindergarten. Last year of HS is 12th grade, so most are 18 or 17-almost-18 when they graduate. Kids can skip a grade or be held back a year, making them a year older or younger than most, but that's not terribly common.

In France school is mandatory from 6 to 16, but highschool ends up when you're 18 if you didn't fail a single year. Then universities or prep schools etc... I think it's pretty all the same everywhere plus or minus a year.

I feel so pathetic... I only know English. I'm hoping that when I get older though, I will be able to learn others.
