at least, scanlators will be able to pick up some of TP unfinished business if no other company takes it.

I don't really have enough money to collect manga... the only volume I bought from them was Shiawase Kissa Sanchoume Vol. 4 because Borders was closing near-by...

Most of the other series I'm collecting come from Viz and Yen Press, so yeah...

But it is pretty sad. They did publish Fruits Basket which I'm planning on collecting later on... but other than that... I'm pretty neutral with this news... I do hope those who get laid-off can find work in this economy...

There is not a single thing I buy from them anyway. I do own Love Hina, but since then, not a single thing worth buying. Everything comes from Del Ray, Viz, Yen Press, and Dark Horse now.

I really hated them but... Shinobi Life... Maid-sama.
Also I've been collecting manga for 6 years now and of course I have a lot of Tokyopop. This absolutely breaks my heart. TAT

Crap... That's a shame. I only have 5 Tokyopop series though, all of which are completed, so it's no big deal for me, but still, it's bad news. I hope somebody else picks up their releases.

They're really stopping manga production? What about their light novel translations? Argh, Swell... Just when I took the chance at buying a ongoing series, they decide to stop publishing. I have a few light novels from them that are still in progress too. *sigh*

Well, I can't say they were a very good manga publisher cause the manga that I was getting from them always had switched and missing dialogue and lazy translating but I still liked what I read online enough to still buy the official translation of it.

I know it's not logical but I wish that they'd finish the series they've got before ending production.

o_o Not defending them or anything, but can anyone tell me specifically the reason why they were bad?

1) The flipped the manga.

2) They edited the content of the series, taking out entire chunks of story at times and changing the dialogues to make new stories.

3) They bought up a ton of licenses and forced scanlators to cease translations when they haven't released any volumes of their own.

4) They've canceled series suddenly with no reason given nor releasing the said licenses so other companies can pick up the localization.

5) Their release schedule doesn't benefit the series, taking over a year or two to release something that has several volumes in the native language already just makes people lose interest in it even more.

6) The amount of crap "manga" (badly drawn western comic in manga format) they flooded the market with was and still is an insult the the term "manga" in my opinion. If they had sold it as "comic" then no probs, but just the fact they tried to use "manga" to sell their own crap was absurd.

There are more things that they did that pissed people off, I'm just stopping here because I don't want to remember all the terrible crap they shoved down people's throats. mad

You do realize that Tokyopop was the first company to actually use the unflipped, original Japanese way of reading manga, right? Before that every company that released manga had it in standard American comic book format.

They printed it on recycled paper and charged so much more.

Well, not like I really hate them or anything. On one hand, I don't really care about TP since I buy mostly the Japanese version. On the other hand, I bought Kindaichi from them, so they really shouldn't go down before they finish publishing it.

I respect Tokyopop. They licensed some of the most amazing and underrated series I've ever read (namely, The Embalmer and Immortal Rain, as well as a recent interest, Demon Sacred) and seemed reliable and interesting.

I really will miss them, but I'll survive—I just ordered a ton of RAW manga, so there's not too much that can make me tragically unhappy right now.

RIP, Tokyopop. I loved you while you lived. Thank you for bringing things like The Embalmer to the English-speaking world.

It's too bad Tokyopop turned into this, and drove themselves into the ground. I really liked them when they first started, they really catered to the manga community unlike the POS Viz publishing. I don't know how Viz is now since I swore off of them a really long time ago, but anyone remembering Viz's really really early days they were doing exactly what Tokyopop is doing now, except they wouldn't even keep the manga in it's original reading order and cut out huge swaths of chapters.

Anyways, there really needs to be a new business model for the US version of manga. Spending a $1000 on manga that gave you enough to only casually read through in two weeks is not sustainable for any kind of manga fan no matter how devoted.
