By the way, if you're using an example from Death Note, Light would take L any day. Light, actually, might give Lelouch a run for his money. I think some people read death note, and consider L to be the super-genius of the series, but, these people are forgetting that, uh, Light out maneuvered him like crazy. The only time I've ever seen someone execute a complicated scheme more brilliantly would be...
Well, we've come back to Lelouch. His tactics were just ridiculous.
But to the point, on top of being a super genius to begin with, Lelouch was a chess player beyond just about anyone else on the planet. You couldn't find a single character, in any series, who could best Lelouch. And that's not even taking into account his Geass.

Ishida and Conan definitely fall out of the boat. That leaves Lelouch, Shikamaru and L who in my opinion are the smartest of the bunch.
Disregarding Lelouch's experience with Western chess, he tends to be too arrogant for his own good, so it might be that he makes a mistake against those superb opponents.
And even though L has been never shown playing chess, I'm pretty sure he's an expert in that as well. He was a genius raised at an orphanage where several other highly-gifted children grew up.
Then, there's also Shikamaru who learned Japanese Chess... in what, 1 hour? ... and he was pretty good in it from the beginning to boot. If I remember correctly Japanese chess rules are more complicated than the Western ones.
So yeah, those three are definitely good opponents for eachother.

earlier someone said shikamaru would lose as soon as chess was introduced.i agree
ishida i have never seen play chess, only be a schoolwork genius so i have no idea why he is an option.
conan no. just no. i am not up to date with my conan and im sure he has had to play chess in an episode, but he is not the super genius.
and now im torn. i love lelouch and L, but who would win. lelouch has geass but probably would not use it. he won all of his games except for the one against mao.
L wins. i think that his overall intellect and intuition is the best with the ability to not overthink himself too much. i also think that the overall scope of light's plans and knew he would have to die to get the victory in the long run.
and the match of lelouch and light would be a standstill. but L would play some king of psychological game with lelouch (silent of course) and end up winning

hmmm I am really sure that L or shikamaru will win now .... Although Lulouch is really good at chess he has a habit of making his point to move his "king" first... which might not be a good idea against super genius people like L or shikamaru, since every move has to be a crucial one in order to beat them.

i tried to add 1 person from the series that i was interested by and if i had to add light then near would have been a must in character which tips the balance to death note characters

Shikamaru would win if there were no time limit, otherwise it would be Lelouch
The reason Shikamaru would win IMO is because after planning he would have already predicted what moves were likely to happen and how to counter them (No matter how many, the moves in chess are still limited) but the amount of time it takes Shikamaru to strategize would be his weakness in a time limited game for obvious reasons.
Lelouch would be second best because of his strategic mind, and since chess is a game of strategy...but as Doc said, his arrogance could very well be his downfall. He also loses his composure easily when under pressure to think straight.
L most of the time tends to think too much on things and his moves may very well be considered gambles if anything else.
Never read Conan so I wouldn't know and Ishida is just the calm and collected type who uses caution and a bit of common sense when planning.

I don't mean to offend here, but anyone choosing anyone other than Lelouch is simply very wrong. And perhaps hasn't watched the series in full.
Spoiler (highlight to view) Lelouch played chess with the entire planet as his game board. Did any of these other cats conquer the world? Well, Lelouch did. Using Zero, he became the world's dictator, and then eliminated said dictator, bringing peace and freedom to all. For a time, at least. Further, one should consider how he managed to do this. He didn't get everything handed to him on a platter. He was given several defeats, experienced set back after set back, but adapted. Changed his tactics each time, and pushed forward. Real time tactics. No one can really predict their opponents' every move. It's the player who can adapt to anything who'll win in the end.
